Well the engine is kaput on the STi already. No idea what happened this time but the postmortem will hopefully shed some light. At this point signs point to an oil pickup failure. Pan isn't dented but its one of the only plausible options right now.
In light of that I'll be selling some stuff to help fund the engine rebuild: Stock STi turboback Bosal Twin tip catback Prodrive springs (blue) Invidia bellmouth WRX downpipe w/ 2 O2 bungs. ...annnd I gotta see what else is in the garage that I can sell. More to come soon. |

Yeah, that sux. I picked the escape the salesman had been driving for the last month for my son. Thought was they put 1400 miles at the dealership so it had to be good. They changed the oil and checked all hoses and stuff the day before he picked it up. Dropped a piston on the way home !! Not costing us anything and he is getting a car to drive but dang. On another note. The Bee is going into the paint shop next week for bumpers, mirrors and CF bits to be painted. Tires struts and inspection after that. A few tweaks and on autotrader it goes. Upping the price as these cars seem to be going for big bucks. |

Dave, what led you to that diagnosis?
Also, you have an sti shortblock there right? Figure you could use the crankshaft/rods from that one. Rebuild shouldn't be too expensive. Just the cost of fluids/gaskets/bearings. |

goddammit, i had a big thing typed up last night and when i hit post i got the moose!
so i went down to check it out the night before last, when it happened on dave all of a sudden on the parkway, he limped it into work, and when i listened to it, it didnt' sound like a rod knock, we were both convinced it was a timing pulley. so i went down last night ~ midnight with a few tools and all the timing belt idlers. i changed out the only timing pulley that had any play, in the right spot for the noise. lower pass side. and it was a single roller too. still sounded, without the timing covers it sounded like rod knock. his oil is correct level, pan isn't dented, oil doesn't smell too bad. said it felt great before, and during the knocking. with the data i have, i can think of only two feasible scenarios: 1: piston seized in bore at some point, and tore through the oil film on that rod bearing, downhill from there. but ther'e is no oil burning in the exhaust. a scored bore that would result from that would eat up oil and smoke. 2: pickup failure. i can't imagine another oil pump came apart on him like the last one. it has ~45k on the whole drivetrain. i gave it 15k hard miles in 5 years, he put on 4k in ~3 months. regardless i still feel like an *******. :/ also i tore down both of daves available shortblocks. one has 3 decent pistons, dunno about the crank and rods yet, and one seriously scored bore and piston. the old red wagons engine has 2 cracked pistons, that failed oil pump, two scored to hell bores and two toast rods, crank is destroyed, all pistons worn to hell. we also have a crank from Nick, which after close inspection is i think also done. i dunno. seriously, have any of us NOT had an engine or transmission failure? I cant' even say SOHC NA is the wya to go as Daves first engine failure was just that! |

Although your sti trans had grind/shift issues that you complained about. You just got rid of it before anything severe probably happened

same as i run in all my cars. rotella T6, and it used to do ~1.5 bar warm idle and 6+ at RPM cold idle was 2+bar. but i took the gauges out months ago. not like i drove it in the meantime though. maybe 3 times after Dave and I had an agreement in august or something.
the trans grind was 4th and only really on downshift, and the right fluid would fix it, it's got some stupid royal purple in it the PO put in right when i got it at 25k. i loaned my extra-S to Ryan when he did his 6spd swap, he's just been too busy to get me and now dave back some for the car. |

Anybody catch this in the latest consumer reports? I really like the graph of road test scores and reliability, its a pretty good way of looking at something.
http://i.imgur.com/K02pb.jpg I was pleasantly surprised by Mazda. I was also surprised to see how much better Ford scored over GM. Chrysler is right about where I would have predicted. |

You ran Rotella T6 for the past 5 years? Thought you started using that just a couple of years ago.
Either way, it should be fairly easy to remove the oil pan and inspect the pickup. Get to it Dave! |
