I think you can just rent a manual car and then most our good friendly kind great members can help you out. Or.....even better...we can teach you on your new RS (evil grin )

Ah ha... I wouldn't try learnin' it on a new car... Especially if it's mine, I think I'll wreck it.

Rent one could be a good idea, but how do you have to be to rent a car? I only 19(Turning 20 at May ), I don't think I can rent one.

Learning stick is easy! Just takes a car to practice on. Beg, borrow, or steal someones car and drive with them. Start off in a large open area such as a parkinglot. Practice starting and stopping -- get a feel for the clutch. Practice going in reverse too! Try "parallel parking" next to a line on the ground. You don't need to go very fast -- just get into second gear. Don't worry about downshifting just yet -- it's usually unnecessary about 70% of the time.

LaterZ!

Well, I do have a friend has a manual 01 Celica GTS, but he just wouldn't let me touch his car. He's only willing to teach me if I had my own car...

I think "Young Driver" have standard vehicles to practice, but you would have to pay.. I couldn't find any standard vehicles available a few months back so renting a standard might be a problem, unless you have money to rent from exotic.

IBO, one fast question, is your last name ***?
Ok, back to topic, dont wanna kicked by Keiho! hehe

You can try the chinatown budget to rent a manual car. Ask for Kit (if she still working there) If not, just tell the staff there you are referred by Fred from VCMC, probably they can arrange a good deal for you.
For those who go to autox, don't let Pat Ma know that we rent his car for driver training, especially refer by me, hehe.

I learned at Young drivers of Canada when I was learning to get my license. I dont think many Drivers Training institutions teach 5-spd. Im pretty sure you can call YD of Canada for a couple lessons.

Honestly though, you dont really need it, I was taught the basics through the instructor, but I 'really' learned by reading and driving by myself. Whatever you do, dont get your dad to teach you... hehe.

Especially with a dad like mine

my friend was nice enough to let me learn on his 1.6EL just before i bought my RS. Man does that thing have a stiff clutch. Anyway, learning on the EL made driving the RS seem pretty easy.

I don't think you're not going to hurt learning on your new car, as long as you don't suck that badly. I think I drove my RS off the lot which was my 3rd. actual time driving stick (1st in a POS Nissan, 2nd. in a Civic, 3rd. in my RS).

That's not a joke, just because yesterday when I was at Specialty, Steve Skinner asked if I knew a guy with last name ***. He said Mr. *** email him and ask about the 02 RS, so I thought that's IBO, and that's all.

Hey don't think that we will make fun of anyone if we got a chance. Keith-o? (quote from other msg, haha)

Ok, if you are talking about car rental, I think shouldn't let the owner know we use the car for learning how to drive stick. And basically their miata got enough harrassment from the autox guys. AND the main thing is I only been to 2 autox in last 2 years!

What the heck is a class 7 driver?

And you're better off finding a friend or parent who has a standard car to teach you...why?

Because you're 19 like you said. And most car rental places require you to be 21. Unless you get someone else to rent for you, but if you crash or anythig..you know..you'll be liable for a LOT of things.

I've been driving a manual tranny since jan 4, when i got my RS. One thing that still makes me nervous is when i'm parked on a hill, and some car gets right on your butt. Only thing i can say it, let the clutch out about halfway, right before the gear kicks in, then swiftly move the right foot over to the gas... I'd practice that if i were you. I know some of you long time manual drivers can back me up on this.

Good luck!

Never used the hand brake on the steep hil
Just have to work really fast....
go practice in a parking lot till you get used to the clutch and gas movement then the rest is easy.....
Only problem I had was 1st gear and reverse where you have to balance them...so practice till you get used to it then steep hill is nothing...hehehe

Yeah, I've gotten pretty good at it now... but again.. people aggrivate me when they get right on your bumper, cause one false timing or move could send you to the insurance company.

IBO - I'd suggest a friend teaching you.. maybe if you have a friend that has a POS car. Then they won't mind if you grind 'em.

Thumbs up

You could always use the handbrake to keep yourself from rolling backwards on a hill. It gives you time to coordinate your clutch and gas movements.
