? for STi owners - burning clutch smell from reverse?
Let me preface this question with a statement in hopes that it will at least avoid most of the flames I expect to come. I know how to drive a manual. It's all I have ever owned and do not ride the clutch, slip it, mash the gas before the clutch is fully engaged, etc... That's all I am going to say about that.
So, on with the question... Do any other STi owners exhibit a very noticable clutch burning smell whenever they go to back up? Despite my most conscious efforts I cannot avoid smelling burning clutch whenever I go in reverse. It's very disconcerting, really. I hate it. I never noticed this in my WRX or any other manual I have driven. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. -Jason

It happens to me too man. The only way to prove this to the dealership would be to take a test drive with a factory rep.

I have come across burning clutch smell when reversing under specific condition: when both front wheels are on snow and rear wheels are on relatively dry gound. DCCD in Auto.
Happened to me a few times. Everytime I could feel some `fighting' of clutch/differential. But when not under this condition, no problem. I could only sepculate high traction difference between front & rear axles caused the center differential to repaidly adjust its locking (lock-open-lock) and thu slippage/ smell is produced. MY 04Sti rides on LM-22. Hope this informaiton is useful. 2dino |

Yep, I get it all the time. Due to the tight space in my garage, I have back the car in when parking. The driveway and garage are both level and on the same plane, so there's not a lot of slip needed to get the car moving.
Ironically it doesn't seem to happen no matter how hard I abuse the clutch going forward, but maybe that's just because I'm going so fast the smell can't catch up! |

When I was on some snow and ice yesterday, playing around a little bit, I could smell a really strong smell like the clutch. But I wasn't using the clutch at all. I don't think it comes from the clutch.
Does the differential (center, rear, front?) make this smell. What is wearing because of this? I have smelled this with the center diff in auto and manually set a bit toward the back. |

I have never noticed a clutch smell from reversing, I'll keep a nose out though.

It’s been happening to me since I got my STI five months ago. It’s funny that this recent thread is here because as of Thursday of last week my clutch went out at 14,000 miles. I have previously filed two complaints about the clutch smell with SOA. Will see what happens tomorrow.

Well the verdict is in, the warranty claim is denied because the car was stuck in the snow. I know I should not have been out in the snow on my summer radials but when the school district dropped my daughter off in the snowstorm last Thursday three miles from our home I just couldn’t leave her stranded out there. So the clutch is going to be installed at the dealership for a mere $1250.00, not too bad huh? If you smell your clutch report it to SOA, if you drop your clutch and launch it hard report it to your bank account to make sure you have it covered. Now to get the body damage fixed and I’ll be good to go very expensive toy but it’s fun.

Phil.. dude... next time talk to me. I understand the reasoning behind your warranty claim being turned down but you could always just buy a clutch and get some help installing it. Doesn't hurt to do a lil manual labor on your toy

there is alot of work involved with replacing a clutch you shouldn't of let the dealer do it after they denied your warranty. 1250.00 is way to much to pay for a clutch replacement.

Coming from the guy that was too lazy to do his brake pads! Most of that 1200 was the replacement clutch. Dealer prices on STi stuff are crazy.

Seems to me I only smell the clutch if I've slipped it a bit when I first started reversing. I do get the occasional smell from nowhere though....maybe once every couple of months or so. And yeah, the smell certainly IS disconcerting...especially when you take pains to treat the driveline well.

I think it's mostly a matter of getting used to the clutch feel. After driving a couple STi's I've got a bad habit of riding the clutch a bit because I'm not used to the feel of it. I use an ACT aftermarket clutch on my car so they're quite different.
