Default Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch trademarked

Toyota has registered patents for the GR Corolla, C-HR GR-S and C-HR GR Sport names, potentially confirming that small SUV and larger hot hatch brothers for the Toyota GR Yaris are on the way.

The first Toyota GR Corolla is expected to be powered by the same all-new turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder that was specifically created for the upcoming GR Yaris by the car-makerís in-house performance division, Gazoo Racing.

Itís not yet known how the Corolla will be positioned, but it could produce even more power and torque than the 190kW/360Nm offered by the pint-sized GR Yaris to help it tackle cars like the next Volkswagen Golf GTI and Hyundai i30 N, or even the next VW Golf R.

The Corolla GR Sport previews the full-blooded Corolla hot hatch design
Set to feature all-wheel drive and a traditional six-speed manual transmission, the hottest Corolla ever will also get multi-link suspension and adaptive suspension.

With aggressive GR Yaris-style weight-saving that could include a carbon-fibre roof and plentiful use of lightweight composites, the GR Corolla should hit 100km/h in comfortably less than five seconds and top out at around 260km/h.

The bad news is the GR Corolla isnít expected to touch down until 2023. Itís thought Toyota bosses deliberately gapped the GR Corollaís arrival to buy the little GR Yaris some breathing space to win the hearts and minds of hot hatch buyers.

With GR Yaris power, the Corolla hatch will take on the Hyundai i30 N
Originally, it was thought the next Gazoo Racing model to be launched would be the GR C-HR, but that nameplate was absent in this trademark application, hinting that may no longer be the case.

Instead, the new C-HR GR-S and C-HR GR Sport nameplates are likely to appear on slightly sportier versions of the small C-HR SUV, neither of which are expected to get more power.

They are, however, likely to bring upgrades like a sports body kit and suspension developed by Toyotaís go-faster division.

Expect the Toyota C-HR GR Sport to be on sale as soon as late this year.
