Default Planning on going to see 24 hours at Le Mans

Ok, here's the scoop. I'm a freshman in college and my parents didn't give me a senior trip last year. I think they feel sorry about it because they said they would help me out financially if I wanted to go see Le Mans this year. I have been to france twice and le mans once, but didn't get to see the race. I get free airfare, so that shouldn't be a hold up.

Does anyone know.....

A reputable website or place to buy tickets from?
Where I should look into staying?
How much I should plan on spending (besides airfare)?
General Advice?
Do you know any american teams that are going?

I believe team Seattle was planning on racing there this year, but I don't know if they have qualified yet.

............Or should I just buy a ticket for the Monaco Grand Prix

Thanks!!!

www.lemans.org

Where I should look into staying?

City of Le Mans. Numerous inexpensive hotels. Hotel Etap is a good one.

How much I should plan on spending (besides airfare)?

How long are you staying? That usually governs how much is costs to travel.

General Advice?

Bring a good camera. Don't buy a seat and sit in it for all 24hrs-- walk around and enjoy the 8 miles of the track and the 250,000 crazy people. Bring good rain gear. Bring a radio and ear buds to hear Radio Le Mans commentary unless you speak/understand French.

Do you know any american teams that are going?

Yes, many, but you need to do some research of your own. You could answer all of your questions here with a few minutes of googling.

I believe team Seattle was planning on racing there this year, but I don't know if they have qualified yet.

Team Seattle hasn't done anything to earn an invite.

Flying Lizard and Farnbacher Loles are two American teams I think are going. Who is Team Seattle?

Will Corvette Racing be there this year?

You also might want to try camping out w/ all the drunk loonies instead of staying in a hotel for race night :P

From what I've heard, camping out is best.

Corvette Racing, Risi Competizione, Bell Motorsports, Flying Lizard

Farnbacher Loles might get an invite, as may Taffel.... but neither are in on their merits yet.

I found a site that was geared towards visitors from the UK... but it was a guide about camping, visiting, getting tickets, getting there, etc. I'll try to find it again for you.

Last I heard Team Seattle was joining forces with a similar program in France with the expectation that the combo of the two was going to be good enough to get them an invite.

i would camp, stay in le sarthe or lemans (lemans is nuts, so is le sarthe)!

you might find a cheap room for rent at a hotel as suggested above, but for race night stay at the track then head to paris for some fun!

Thats what I was told by one of the drivers (from seattle), but it sounds like no one else here has heard about it...

I think that might be because nobody has ever heard of Team Seattle. As I recall, they raced Grand-Am... right? I'm not sure why they expect to just be able to go to Le Mans, but it's an invite system. You either do well at Le Mans, in the ALMS Championship, LMS Championship, FIA GT championship, or at Petit Le Mans to get an automatic invite. They did none of that. I think it'll be February or March when the ACO announces their lottery invites and they might make it in there... but I wouldn't count on it, considering they're going to be running GT2 class.... and that's a packed field.

I have a feeling they're going to have to run ALMS or LMS for a year to prove themselves worthy to compete in 2010.... or switch to a less cramped field like GT1 or LMP2 where they might be more likely to get picked as a provisional entry.

I went for '08. All of the above sums up pretty much. Rain gear, head phones, cash, food, beer, walking shoes. Drive around inside the track, and to all the spectator corners. Get a good zoom lens.

They've done sporadic Rolex GT events for the past few years, and all of the drivers are rental types. Good people, and a great cause, but they'd need to pair up with a known team to get an invite.

The ACO hands out a few odd invitations each year to hopeless teams that have an interesting story (think Tokai University), so anything is possible.

But that situation would be a little different wouldn't it? Didn't they run LMP1 with Audi and Pug? Surely with GT2 being more competitive they'll be a little more gun shy with the invites.

How is GT2 more competitive than P1 at Le Mans?

Maybe not more competitive, but I think the ACO tries to keep GT cars a small field and is more apt to bring in prototypes instead. How many GT1/2 teams last year got provisional invites compared to LMP1/2?
