Well its supposed to be spring time but its still frosting most mornings and snowing occasionally here in VT. Despite that, I decided to bring my wagon back home from where I store it so I can start putting it back together and enjoy it throughout the spring/summer/fall

Not having it sitting in front of me for a few months has definitely instilled a new sense of determination and excitement!

Interested to hear what you think of the sound deadening/damping once back out on the road.

Sorry could you repeat that? I can't hear you under all this sound deadening stuff

Seriously though, me too. I just ordered more butyl to do the doors and mayyyyybeee the roof if I'm feeling like pulling the headliner but either way I'm excited and motivated!

Alright, long time no updates as the car has been in storage for the winter. As-per previous post, I've pulled it back out and got working on it!

First up is the panel that goes over the spare tire compartment, which is where my air ride stuff lives. After raising the platform up a bit, the tank sticks up past the plane of these panels so I wanted to reveal it through the panel. I picked up some hardboard from Lowes and after making a very tight fitting template, carefully cut out the board.

The hardboard isn't especially rigid so I added some aluminum strapping to strenghten it up a bit. Not pictured but I added two more pieces on both sides of the air tank cutout that run perpendicular to the ones pictured.

The alumninum strapping made the board much more stuff, but it still lacked mass. I added butyl to the panel to give it some weight.

Before getting too far, I knew I wanted to trim the underside of the panel so I traced out the shape of the panel with a paint marker

I then trimmed the top of the panel

The trick to getting fabric to fit snug is lots of little relief cuts as you can see here

Finished panel, looks good to me!

*Ace Ventura Voice* LIKE A GLOVE!

In the photo above you can see I replaced my Optima Yellowtop with a PC625 battery. I put this little guy in there before storing the car for the winter, didn't leave it on a tender (did disconnect the battery) and it started the car no problem when I pulled it out of storage-- I'm impressed! Because this battery is so much smaller than the Yellowtop, I replaced the foam panel near the passenger quarter panel and cut it out perfectly for the battery. In order to keep the battery wires clean and tidy, I mounted the circuit breaker to the quarter panel trim piece via nutserts. This does add one extra step when removing that large trim piece from the vehicle, but seeing as this is an extremely infrequent thing I'm OK with this.

Minor detail, but I did manage to source a suitable replacement for the RH "foam" panel that I had previously cut up when relocating my battery which at the time, was an Optima Yellow Top. Since I replaced my Yellow Top with a much smaller battery (pictured), I wanted to make the foam panel fit to the smaller battery so I ended up with what you see in the photo. I also mounted the main 200a circuit breaker to the interior panel via two nutserts (also pictured). This does add one extra step when removing that large trim piece from the vehicle, but seeing as this is an extremely infrequent thing I'm OK with this.

Before putting everything back together, I repainted the spare tire compartment which had suffered some scratches throughout the years of working on my car, and added some closed cell foam to help keep road noise out of the cabin.

Here's how the air management fits with all the foam panels in. Tight, but everyhing clears! As you can see I still need to bend a few new hard lines after moving stuff around, but I'll get there!

Before I put the car away for storage I added a bunch of butyl and sound insulating foam to the chassis and I wanted to do the same thing to the doors as many other folks have done throughout the years. This process is well documented and not very exciting, but the general idea is just add butyl until the panel makes a solid "thud" when you knock on it rather than an empty/thin sound. This was adequate for me, and each door received the same treatment to both the inner and outer door skins.

I also picked up some adhesive-backed closed cell foam which I added in strips to the inside of the outer door skin. This is some thick stuff, as you can see here:

At some point I lost the vapor/water barriers (plastic lining) so I made my own out of some 6mil heavy duty plastic. For additional sound deadening I added a big sheet of padded headliner material. I've seen this on the equivalent part of later models and in my Legacy so figured what the heck, might as well.

At this point the only thing left to figure out was how I was going to mount the tweeter. After lots of scrunity, I decided to go with the OEM location. This topic is thoroughly debated and yes this probably isn't technically the best location for a tweeter, I'm pleased with the factory-like fit. I picked up some OEM tweeters and repurposed the brackets for my aftermarket ones.

For the speakers themselves, I picked upsome well made adapter spacers and added some speaker foam to better seal them. Here's the front doors before putting the panels back on. I wasn't sure how the baffle around the tweeter would work with the door handle trim, but it's a perfect fit and really helps direct the output.

The rear speakers required a little bit of fab as the mounting brackets provided weren't very useful and the aftermarket ones I picked up didn't work with my particular speaker model. I noticed how comparable the speaker was in size to the OEM counterpart and given that I had no intention on reusing or selling the OEM rear speakers I decided to try to salvage the plastic bracket and was successful! I dremeled away some material to detatch the factory speaker and added nutserts to retain the aftermarket one. Overall I'm very pleased with the OEM fit! I chose to use phillips head button screws to retain the speaker to the bracket in order to match the hardware used throughtout the rest of the door panel; a small detail for sure, but will make life easier by the way of fewer tools if these parts ever need service.

RESULTS
While not a thorough test by any means, I plugged in my headunit, finished up wiring my amp and sub, closed all my doors and sat in the car (without much of an interior other than door panels) and turned on accessory power. I was very pleasantly surprised by the audio quality! The best way I can describe it is that the car feels much more enclosed, like an acoustic chamber. Sound just fills the cabin more, and the car feels much more insulated from the outside. I really hope this carries over to driving/road noise, and I think it will! Throughout this process I've replaced/reinstalled sooooo many miscellaneous interior clips and fasteners, with all the added sound dampening/deadening I'm sure I'll notice a big difference cruising around. I'm really trying to make my wagon more "daily friendly" and at this point my hopes are very high that I'm succeeding!!

Got the dash and the center console trim back in. Going to button up the driver side tonight, give the carpet a good vacuum and put the seats back in. I have yet to bring the car to the dealer for the Takata recall so I'm waiting to put the glovebox and airbag cover panel back as it will just come right back out anyhow.

Very short list of things left before its back on the road, much excite

Finally! I've got my car back on the road! With the help of my wife, the remaining interior panels were finished up and reinstalled, then the rest of the interior followed. I got aligned the other day and for the first time in years(!!) the camber specs are actually within tolerance at 1.8 negative degrees all around.

The car feels outstanding going down the road. I honestly can't remember the last time it felt so darn good. Even my wife commented that it felt "way better" than years past

This morning I took the car on its first road journey-- to work! I'm so happy to be driving it so early (for me at least, lol). I've got an appointment with the local dealership on Thursday for the Takata recall and a couple small aesthetic changes planned before WBM but that's it! I hope to really drive this car a lot this summer

Quick edit-- please forgive the janky front plate currently impeding airflow to the intercooler... the local PD are really strict about having a plate on display and I didn't have time to fab a proper mount last night. That's on the agenda for this week!

How does it feel with all the acoustic insulation now that you can actually use it on the road? Did interior noise go down significantly?

Oh man, its a world of difference! Just did 500 miles round trip to WBM and it was by FAR the best the car has ever felt!! I couldn't be happier, it was one of those moments where all my hard work was very much realized

---

I had a great time at WBM this year! Thanks to everyone who came by and said hi!!

My buddy Pete snapped this cool roller on the way home!

Oh also, around 1am on Saturday I finished up my hard line setup! Really happy with how it came out-- this whole board can be removed in about 2 minutes... the serviceability!!!

Big day for us yesterday, we closed on a house! Planning on building a workshop where I'll be able to continue my build with more space for activities and no concerns of pissing off condo association people with loud noises

@bagridersJohn- hey question im planning on going with the OCD bags for my BC BR coilovers standard length, i have a set of wheels 18x10 with low offset and i want to air out and sit fender between lip and tire since ill be running a 225/35. Do i need to notch the frame to achieve this or would i be good without it?????-thanks in advance.

on the GD chassis you'll very likely require frame and chassis modifications to sit fender to lip up front depending on how much negative camber you're running it may put the lip closer to the fender arch. the best thing to do is to remove your front end with the vehicle on an alignment rack or stands or something, air the car out, and see where you're at.

This past weekend was one that I look forward to every year-- the weekend of Wolfsgart: a big local show that brings in thousands of enthusiasts. We also host our annual "Block Party" on Friday before the show which is always a great time. Here's a short video clip:

https://scontent-lga3-1.cdninstagram...14414336_n.mp4

Our friend Peter Stuppard (https://www.flickr.com/photos/psphotographyy/) aka "speedy pete" took a bunch of awesome photos that I wanted to share here. His Flickr has a TON of awesome content from the show (not to mention the rest of his portfolio) so go check it!!

Here's a few favorites of my wagon on the roll

For those of you who remember Kevin's bagged RS from way back in the day (we're talking 2010 here) he recently sold that car and got himself a beautiful 2015 335i which he wasted no time in bagging and fitting some nice splits from BC Forged. Despite being friends for well over a decade and sharing an apartment for 5 years we have very very few photos of our cars together, so we had to take the opportunity to share the road for some rollers!

We ended the weekend with a small get together at the home of Ian Weber, the sales and wholesale manager here at Bag Riders. He had a static slammed blobeye way back in the day and has since grown his collection to include a white e36 M3 bagged on BBS RF's and his extremely wild 240sx which we had in our booth at Wicked Big Meet. Pete climbed up on the roof of Ian's house and took some really cool photos of the gathering.

This was another opportunity that we couldn't pass up: having a collective photo of a few Bag Riders employee cars. Clockwise from the left side:
Subaru WRX Wagon: Myself (John Hall, CTO @ Bag Riders)
Lexus LS400: Zach Wilson (Zach Wilson, Marketing Director @ Bag Riders)
BMW F30 335i: Kevin McGovern (Product Manager @ Bag Riders)
BMW E36 M3: Ian Weber (Sales & Wholesale Manager @ Bag Riders)
Volvo C30: Pete Genest (Sales @ Bag Riders)
Nissan 240sx: Ian Weber (Sales & Wholesale Manager @ Bag Riders)

I hope you all enjoy the photos, I know I sure do!
