Default Protect Transmission

I wanted to know if replacing the clutch and flywheel would help protect the transmission and much higher cost to replace. I will soon be at 330+wtq and was wanted to know the best way to strengthen the transmission. I have a heavy foot on a daily basis and plan to drag the car a few times a year. Also plan on installing new engine, transmission, and pitch stop mounts...will this make any difference as far as protection?

Your clutch and flywheel are how the motor connects to the transmission without slipping. Your transmission can still be damaged. The mounts for engine, trans, and pitch make no difference.

Why are you worried about "protecting" it? And by protect I assume you mean not shattering gears...

A lighter flywheel will help a little, but a stronger clutch will make the stress worse.

Probably make it easier to strip a gear...

If you think about it this way a stronger pressure plate will grab harder and if you drag launch your car and you get all the power put down to the wheels where it would otherwise slip more, than that is gonna be a higher chance to strip first gear. You would just have to learn again how to slip your clutch the right amount and not damage anything.

Also stiffer mounts will transmit more force through the body of the car

I am worried about the increased whp + wtq that I will be placing on the wrx transmission and am concerned about how much it will be able to withstand.

Less than what you plan.

Look into trade in values towards an STi or costs to install an STi 6 speed.

Let me guess, you read one thread and now you think your trans won't hold any power at all over stock.

330+ wtq and drag a couple times a year?

I would be worried. (then again, I did one drag day 5 years ago for the first time since 1976 and blew a clutch on a mis-shift)

Yes I'm worried that the 100+whp/100+wtq increase over stock will increase my chances of shattering gears

All those blown gearboxes, none of them are driver errors.

Then learn to drive or start saving to swap in a 6 speed or stronger 5 speed gears.

But if you are DDing the car you should be fine.

I've got a heavy foot and like to launch the car so engine rebuild fund just became transmission fund

Better add in a rear diff fund and axle fund too.

Honestly, it sounds like you bought the wrong car. If your goal is to go out clutch dumping at 330+ whp, you should have bought an STi in the first place. That's the reason the thousands of WRX vs STi threads exist on this forum, to give people an idea of when and why they should buy an STi instead of a WRX. This is one of those cases.

You may be better off cutting your losses now and trading up. The tranny is stronger, the clutch is stronger, the diff is stronger, etc. It already comes with all of the parts you're about to replace on your car, and you get them without flushing your resale value down the toilet.

Or you could spend about the same amount of money by trading your car in for an STi, get all of the same goodies pre-installed with a warranty, and have your resale value go up instead of down.

6-8k increase in price plus would need to remove a few things to go back to stock and would have to order the car and wait 8 weeks

Doing a full 6 spd swap plus brakes plus DCCD controller plus clutch is going to cost about the same, plus installation.

Most or all of which could be installed on the STi once you got it

Unless you can find one on the lot or buy used.

I think you fail to understand what an absolutely horrible idea it is to do something this extreme to such a new car, when you can spend pretty much the exact same amount of money to get a car that already has all of it pre-installed with a warranty.

Think about it this way...if you do this, your car will become almost unsellable. It's resale value is going to drop at LEAST $5k, that's on top of the $6k+ that you put into it to do the swap, which means you're now ~$11k worse off than before. If the car gets stolen or gets totaled, all of the money you invested is gone. Alternatively, if you trade up to an STi, all of the money you put into that trade becomes equity that you will reclaim (at least some of it) when you sell or if it gets stolen/totaled.

It's the same reason why when people post about turboing their N/A impreza, we tell them to sell it and buy a WRX.

I guess ultimately the best alternative is to change the way I drive seeing how it would be a pain for me to pay for the swap or trade up :-( damn my need for speed and low budget lol

you have a 2012 at least its not an 02. From what i hear the new wrx's hold up better. If buying an STI isnt an option just dont worry about it and drive carefully at the dragstrip.

Drive like an adult and not like you just watched 2 Fast 2 Furious and you'll be fine. If you're not having issues with the trans currently then you are making yourself a worry wort for no reason.
