Default Mitsubishi Cancels New Midsize Sedan

Quote:
Any hopes that Mitsubishi would launch a new sedan, one that compliments both the Lancer and Galant in the U.S. lineup, are now dashed.

The company was looking at creating a new midsize sedan, patterned after the Concept-ZT from the 2007 Tokyo motor show. The all-wheel-drive sedan would have been larger than the Lancer, smaller than the Galant, and reportedly a competitor to BMW's 3-series.

Cost was certainly a factor in cancelling the car. The Concept-ZT used an aluminum spaceframe body and the advanced S-AWC all-wheel-drive system lifted straight from a Lancer Evolution. Although Autocar suggests the firm had investigated using a steel body and two-wheel-drive, Mitsubishi still says it can't create a sound business case.

A car company without a mid sized sedan?

Man, this is an interesting move, but it certainly does not look good for them.

Mitsubishi is in trouble. They make a phenomenal car in the Evo with technology that continues to push new grounds, yet the rest of their lineup is unattractive and lackluster.

No, they will have the crappy Galant. It says that this was supposed to be a 3-series competitor.

Well, this would have been a small car for GM.

Perhaps Mitsu will roll the hard six on something better in the compact car range instead?

Hey Mr.

The Lancer is similar to the Cobalt, the Impala is similar to the Galant.

This "mid-size" car would have taken on the Malibu.

GMs cars aren't boats anymore. Now their SUVs are quite silly huge wastes of space. But there are plenty of things to mock GM about without making new ones up.

GOOD! I am glad that they canceled that car. It was quite hideous and better to cancel it now than go forward with yet another car with lackluster sales. The Lancer is a very nice car... in Evo form or even a base model. But beyond the Lancer I wouldn't consider any other Mitsu model.

I am surprised that they don't follow Nissan's example and build a mid-sized car off of a stretched Lancer platform or a shortened Galant platform. Of course with the way the economy/gas prices are, do they really need 3 models within a few inches of eachother? I don't think the Galant is all that big to begin with, so why not make the next-gen one slightly smaller and go after the mid-sized market with that car? Also, Mitsu seems to have a few interesting small cars in Japan, they should be thinking about bringing those over there instead of going with a larger model.

Oh, and for the love of God, just because that large grill works on the Lancer, does NOT mean they should make all their cars have the same grill... looks great on the Lancer, not so much on all your other cars Mitsu!

So true.... except that it also looks terrible on the Lancer Evo. The base Lancer actually looks decent.

Just another car company I am afraid to buy from fearing they won't be in business long enough to honor my warranty.
