Default Occasional fuel smell

Hi everyone I've been getting a fuel shell in my cabin intermently. It used to be when I filled up but I had the fuel tank checked and the gasket area was retouched and resealed. It was good for a few weeks and now it's back and there is no rhyme or reason. It's an 07 WRX with a built engine and stage 2

I had that happen on my 04 wrx when it was cold out, the fuel line clamps wouldn't hold the lines securely and I'd get a fuel leak, it would leak on top of the driver's side head/block. Once the engine warmed up and ambient temps in went up, the leak would stop. I tightened the clamps and it stopped leaking.

This has been a "normal" issues for years on the pre-2008 WRXs / STis.
Don't know if this issue continued after 2007.
Most probably your issue.
Hard part will be tightening down those fuel line clamps. Not always in the best position.

Agree with above.....with a couple exceptions......

To start, OP is in NO, I don't think it gets all that "cold" there in general. The common issue is usually further north.

Second, OP had stuff "touched" by the filler cap and the smell went away. Either it got warmer out during that time, or he has a leak in/by the filler neck (also sorta common) and the "fix" ended up not being more permanent.

Waiting on OP to read this and give more info.

The other issue could also be a failing / failed fuel filler cap and not necessarily a failing / failed fuel filler neck.

Or something else

... Still waiting for the OP to step up and clue us in

Another cause is leaking from the top of the fuel pump under your right rear seat - this is easy to check (remove seat, remove cover, look for leaks).

Sounds like he already had that checked / fixed ( see Post #1 ).
So maybe they did a crappy job on the re-seal or it is a different issue than that

Right. Since the smell came back it would be prudent to go look there again.

Sorry it took so long to respond. It seems like the smell may have been a leak in the ewg that was installed and I mistook it for raw fuel. Since then the ewg leak was fixed and I don't smell it anymore

Default 04 STI fuel leak

Hey guys I have a 04 STI with 130xxx in the clock it’s been getting really bad gas mileage and I smell gas every time I fill all the way up it’s so bad I’m averaging 7 miles to a gallon no exaggeration I have checked for leaks idling running everything and there is not a hint of gas anywhere or even a smell of it I’ve had it in a lift and examined almost every part and can not find the leak anywhere does anybody have any ideas?

Please use proper grammer and punctuation. Writing one long sentence is silly and makes it hard to follow anything you are saying.

Is the gas smell coming from the front or the back of the car?
If you walk around the car, where is the smell strongest?

If your fuel mileage is that low, you must have a leak somewhere
- Have you checked your trunk?
- Could have a leak on the top of the gas tank
- Have you checked your fuel filler neck and all associated hoses?
- Have you checked your fuel rails / fuel lines?

It doesn’t have a specific location I notice it mainly in the cabin with the windows down, j have checked all hoses that are visable minus the ones under the intake you can’t. I was betting on the top of the tank but when I I run it and check I don’t see anything or smell gas that’s why I’m kind of at a loss

If you "top off the tank" when filling, you may have a leak in the filler tube in the PS rear wheel well.
Best bet, fill it up, park, rock the car around and then check for 10 minutes or so for wet spots under the car. Go from there.

Windows up, full of gas, run the HVAC in "flow through" (not recirculated), is the smell worse?
Yes, check for leaks under the hood.
No, check other spots.

PS, this should be in service, not a 2.5turbo limited issue, could be any Subaru.

You're describing exactly what I had last month, turns out the fuel pump casing was cracked. Once I removed the seat and the access panel it was obvious; there was fuel all over the top of the unit and dripping on the ground, only when they tank was full.
