Default Just wanted to say that.....

...my car ran fantastic today. Made a trip from Dracut, MA to Fairfield, NJ in my Stage 2 2013 WRX and got an average of 24.3 MPG which is fantastic. Used just over a half tank on the 4 hour ride. Car held up well with 4 people and a full trunk. About 45k miles on the car.

I decided to make this thread to uplift the people who constantly read the "I spun a bearing" threads. Take care of your car. Check the oil on your breaks at work (If checking at a gas station wait a couple minutes to allow the oil to drain back into the oil pan). It takes two seconds. Change your oil often (not at the 7500 mile interval the manual states). Run Rotella T6 (especially if you are Stage 2 or higher). I change oil every 4500 with the Rotella T6. If you are dead set on running 5w-30 change at 3000 miles tops. Don't drive like a dinkus everywhere. Don't launch the car. Don't feel the need to redline on every pull. Don't floor it in 5th gear. Try to stay away from full WOT pulls in 4th (in your WRX). The highest gear I'll do WOT pulls in is 3rd gear and that is for data logs. Don't cheap out on a tune. If you are really short for money get a tactrix and e-tune from Torqued Performance. That's about $250. DON'T go into boost until your oil is completely up to temp. About 10 minutes after your water temp reaches it's temp.

Many of my previous statements are just opinions and can be argued. Bottom line: Take care of your car and your car will take care of you.

Agreed. Most people think they can just buy these cars and go WOT everywhere right from the first start in the morning.

My 13STi is running great as well, 37k and getting 24mpg. Never been to the dealership for any issues whatsoever.

Yep.

Just finished up my 105 k svc on my 06 STI. Stage 2+ all its life. DD, Track and AX, so it gets driven hard. Still runs and drives perfect and no doubt, I have plenty of miles left to enjoy my setup. Other than Feal rebuilding the struts, no other repair cash spent.

Do the maint and remember its a turbo car.

4.5k miles on my '15 STI runs great, still getting used to all the tics and noises that the EJ makes compared to a quiet Honda K series motor.

+1 on the frequent oil changes. Oil is cheap when compared to an engine build. Also let the car warm up to temp before you beat the hell out of it.

You don't need to wait 10 minutes AFTER the coolant is up to temp. The oil will be warm within about 10 minutes of a stone cold start in 20-30 degree weather assuming you're actually driving and not letting the motor idle to warm up.

So, Everyone should be extra careful with the new wrx?

Not good...

I was thinking of getting a new WRX as a daily.

Well you should be extra careful with any nice car. Just treat it well and keep up with maintenance. I have a ton of fun with my car.

Dirt cheap econoboxes are nice cars?

That's news to me.

So, no getting on it past 3rd gear?

I personally don't, but there are a bunch of people who did it all the time and get away with it. I mean there have been a couple times I've gotten into boost in 4th like passing someone on a highway, but I've never done a full 4th gear pull. My logic is if 3rd gear can take me all the way to 100MPH, why would I need to be going faster than that? If you do get on it in 4th just make sure the RPM's are above 3000. I wouldn't touch 100% throttle in 5th, but that's just me.

I guess it just makes me nervous that someone with a relatively new car is checking in to say its still running.

The OP was being sarcastic in creating this thread. These cars are great and can take a beating. You only hear about the bad on forums hence this thread.

When I got to these forums I was really surprised at the amount of people doing WOT pulls and generally beating on their cars to have fun.
I've never had any of my vehicles at WOT, I drive very conservativly, and open it up once in a while. I mean maybe 3/4 throttle and the car is a great deal of fun.
Like you said, 2nd gear gets you to 60mph and 3rd past 100mph. No reason for me to ever do a 4th or 5th gear pull.
Be nice to it, and it will be nice to you. Like any other vehicle.

Your motor is probably completely clogged with carbon deposits and on it's way to oil consumption issues if it's not there already.

Babying a motor is one of the worst things you can ever do if you want reliability and performance.

So, you're saying it'll burn more oil and cause reliability issues by shifting at 3500 rpm, and only boosting occasionally?

Correct.

Pressure in the cylinders seats piston rings and keeps them seated (makes a good seal).

When you keep those pressures down, the opposite happens (makes a bad seal).

Gas and oil will be blowing by those rings eventually if they aren't already. You'll be burning oil and saturating your oil with gas.

RPM's has very little if anything to do with it. It has to do with engine load and cylinder pressures.

Is this really not common knowledge for the n00bs?
