Updates...

Dunlops are done.

I think I got good usage out of them.

255 ZIISS
3 events, 13 runs
9 track days, 38 sessions
136 laps Thill 3 mile
154 laps Thill 2 mile
54 laps BRP 13cw
~20857 miles

Finally time to use one of the sets of RS3s that have been sitting.

All packed up.

I was able to fit it all with the interior. But I did have to move the front seat forward. The sizing on 245/255 doesn't make use of the space well.

Had to pick a different set of wheels for a little while.

SSR Type C 17x8+35 225/45/17 Hankook R-S3 and they are entirely too small for this car.

Other set is done. Now I have usable tires and more brakes!

I want to get a little more technical with my brakes this time. I measured the pads before I put them on.

Call it 17mm front, 15mm rear. Fronts are new, rears are used. The rears have seen the use of an entire set of fronts.

Shortly after that, the airbag light came on. UGH.

Supposedly, I should be able to scan for a code that will tell me which airbag is being problematic.

AccessPort wasn't able to help me out.

I have a regular scanner that might find it. But I seem to have lost it. I need to look a little harder.

I've been trying to unload my old Q300 for a while. Got an offer to trade for an SRS N1. The same one that I originally traded from the Q300. Took the guy up on his offer and we traded back.

I now have my old N1 back.

It doesn't quite fit as well as it did on the old car.

Immediately melted the bumper.

Time to pack up the car and go to the track!

Brakes are a little easier to pack than wheels. But holy **** are brakes annoying to have in the car. Constant rattling.

Another GoPro housing broke. Haven't had one break like this. But it's fine, I had a spare.

Obligatory, first thing in the morning, picture.

After the first session, the exhaust fit better.

Second session ran into a snag. P0171 code. Figured it was since my BOV was 50/50 that's what caused the code and not really a problem.

Cleared the code and ran the session. Car ran like ****. Checked under the hood and found the problem.

Ziptie to the rescue!

10 image limit is annoying.

At the end of the first day, the brakes were feeling weird. Second day started with a rotor change.

Car was solid the whole day. I ran into some fuel starvation on the first day. On the second day I narrowed it down to the point that after 2 sessions, my car was low enough on fuel that it would starve. Mildly frustrating.

With the hood up after one of the sessions, I noticed something.

Only kind of a lot of blow-by from the BOV. I'm torn. It's kinda bad that all this oil is being sprayed in the engine bay. But this is oil that's not going back into the engine.

On the whole, the car ran well the whole weekend. Brakes were solid. Engine temps were within range. I didn't have to do slow laps. The tires didn't have any grip, I wasn't able to improve on my PBs. I also went through a frustrating amount of gas. Starving after only 2 sessions is rough. For the whole weekend, I burned ~70 gallons of gas.

Yeah... It fit better on the old car. Nothing an exhaust finisher can't fix.

Not long after the track day, I changed my pads out. I concede that XP20s are not great on the street. Switched to ClubRacers.

Took the opportunity to measure the pads.

Found my old front pads.

~9.4mm is the bottom.

The current set,

Front:

Rear:

In one weekend, I used ~4.8mm off the front and ~1.2mm off the rear. It seems that I can go one more day on the fronts and 4 more days on the rears. This level of consumption only kinda sucks.

I also picked up another set of wheels. I was able to buy back the Orange wheels that I had on the old car. But now they're pink.

18x10+30 Rota SS10 with 275/35/18 BFG Comp2.

Threw them on to see how they fit as the car is now.

They only kinda poke.

I also took another approach to cleaning the DPTs.

PlastiDip SUCKS!!

It's coming along but it's a complete pain in the ass. Of course the SS10s have AutoDip on them. Not looking forward to dealing with that.

Finally, rolled 100k on the car.

And that's 10 pictures.

Then things got a little out of hand...

Hanging out with some friends. They were working on lifting a bunch of Jeeps to take on the Rubicon. The place we were at had a few offroad elements. Made it kind of a nice proving grounds for the Jeeps. There were two big mounts, a pile of tree stumps, a "pit", and a "chicane". The pit was probably the most technical elements there. If you could get through the pit, you were ready for the Rubicon. The chicane was the flattest thing there and pretty much the only thing I could do with my Subaru. I was going back a fourth through the chicane a bunch. I had some good slides going.

My friends were giving me **** because I wasn't going very fast in the section where they were. I told them they were is a bad spot and told them to go to this other spot to get a better view. I should also mention that the beginning of the pit is on the outside of the exit to the chicane.

With my friends in the better spot, their phones were out and I was ready to send it.

I uhh... I jumped the pit.

A little bit down the road, there was a pole. I hit that too.

Damage from the pole:

It seems there was something sticking out... The doors caught it.

the front door:

The rear door:

And the sideskirt kinda landed on something.

Looking under the car later, I didn't find any damage to the frame of the suspension components. The lower supports for the front bumper are all gone. But mechanically the car is fine. All the cosmetic damage will probably cost ~$1000 to fix at the cheapest. But it really doesn't look that bad. My biggest concern would be to address the bare metal to keep it from rusting.

To commemorate the incident, I made a new decal.

Not much later, the video found its way on to CarThrottle. You may have seen it.

A few days later... There was another incident.

The culprit?

The hose was dislodged during the rally incident. I initially just tucked it back up into the bumper thinking that was that. But it was not. Lost a bunch of oil going down the highway. Lost most of it stopped on the exit.

Great opportunity to test out the tow hook!

It works! I also learned that it is super difficult to push a car into my garage.

Of course the next day I receive a turbo blanket.

Anyway, took the car apart.

Removed the oil cooler.

There was still quite a bit of oil in it.

The hole was a lot bigger than I thought it was.

I put the filter back on sans oil cooler. Filled the engine back up with oil. It runs fine. I was able to dodge spinning the bearings. While putting everything back together, I also trimmed off the fronts of the fender liners and removed the bumper supports that were broken in the jump. At this point there is nothing attaching the bottom edge of the bumper cover. It kinda flops around in the wind now. But now there's nothing obstructing the installation of a splitter!

Got my hands on another set of wheels.

They fit across the back seat.

They don't look very wide though.

They don't stack very high either.

They're Rota DPT, 18x10+35 with 285/30/18 Dunlop ZII.

I'm excited to get these on the car.

I had a joyous time of receiving things.

Received another intercooler core.

This one should fit. Third time is the charm.

Received some struts.

Received some bolts. I can put some things together now.

Received some BOV bits. Megasonic is going to be fun.

Received a new hose. Will be putting that together and back in during the next oil change.

And finally...

Received a speeding ticket. Took just a little over a year to happen.

And then the car broke again...

During my commute. The exhaust got quiet. Car wasn't making boost. Way down on power. Temps were higher than usual.

Trying to brainstorm possible issues. Roommate blurts out that the cat rotated. My knee-jerk reply, "Shut up, Max. That never happens."

All the lines and stuff look ok. I'm thinking that the boost control solenoid is bad. Drive the car home, it definitely seems that something in the exhaust is clogged.

I had parked the car outside the night before. Maybe something crawled into the muffler. Look in the muffler. Nothing in the muffler.

I am running Brotella. Could the cat be trashed already from the oil? Nah, I haven't been running Brotella that long.

Hmm... Maybe the turbo seized? The engine did kinda not have oil for a bit the other week.

Action plan: Take the downpipe off. With it off, the DP and the turbo can both be checked. Borrow another DP in case that's the problem.

Found a friend who would let me borrow his DP. A DP with literally maybe 11 miles on it. If the DP is the problem, this one will for sure fix it. But he is going to want it back at some point. Found a DP for sale in Sac. Kind of a drive. But it's there.

The day comes... Take off the DP. Turbo looks good. It spins, almost no shaft play. Cool. Turbo is fine.

The DP however... Looking down the pipe it looks like this.

For comparison, here's what the 11 mile DP looks like.

It looks like the cat rotated and that's obviously the problem.

Sonofabitch, Max was right.

What do? Put the 11 mile pipe on knowing that it would need to be changed again or go get the Sac pipe now and install that?

4 hours later...

11 mile pipe, Sac pipe, rotated pipe.

Pop in the Sac pipe. All is good again.

For now.

One of the other things I have been working on has been a set of 17x9 DPTs.

When I got them, they had orange Plastidip on them.

I plan to track these wheels. I don't want to deal with brake dust in the dip along with the possibility of the dip bubbling. So, I need to remove the dip.

It did not peal off easily.

Borrowed a pressure washer. Didn't really help.

Bought some Drillbrushes and busted out the Goo Gone. Butter. But still not all the way off.

Finally, got some 3M adhesive remover.

Acceptable.

The bolt circles were the most difficult part. I have a new found hatred for Plastidip.

Due to my roommate being and idiot and bending 2 of his wheels. My set of 4 became 2.

I hate black wheels. I wanted to paint these something cool. Pretty much everything will work on white.

Shooting for "Takata Green". I think they came out really nice.

Hopefully I'll have the other 2 back around December/January and I can get those painted and on the car. I'm really curious to see how the paint will hold up.

Where were we?

I got the turbo tucked in. It's pretty cozy with its new blanket.

I received a new tow strap. More on this later.

With the car starving at 1/3 of a tank, I need to take more fuel to the track. Got a second fuel jug.

Took this opportunity to update the old one.

I got another Exhaust...

Finally pulled the trigger on some more Cobb stuff.

Got more brakes.

And I tried out a new strategy for changing the brakes. Opening the calipers before removing them. Process is a little simpler/quicker as I don't have to completely remove the caliper this way.

This is what was left on the ClubRacers. These had absolutely no bite in them. These are not pads that can be run all the way to the backing plates.

I started sinking my teeth into the Cobb stuff.

Got a radiator cap. Much better than the Mi****imoto cap.

Cobb battery tie down.

Got the Mo Money faceplate. Seemed fitting.

Also got a lightweight pulley.

Did a few things with that pulley. Had my mechanic put it in along with a 105k service. In addition to that, I also had him pull the oil pickup and install a Killer B pickup and baffle.

The original pickup seemed to have a crack on it. Dodged that bullet, I guess.

With the pan off, he found some shiny bits...

Definitely, probably, damage done when the oil cooler hose let out all the oil. At least one bearing somewhere is damaged. But the engine continues to run without fuss. I'm just going to keep going on it.

I also got some sweet new stickers.

I also received a box of Subaru stuff.

My original center console lid developed a crack. Same crack happened in the old car too.

I learned that that STi version was upholstered. Thinking that one of those could also crack, but that upholstery would cover the crack, I got one of those.

I quite like it.

My trunk was also a hot mess. I had a rear seat net from the old car. But not the knobs to install it.

I ordered the rear and side nets. The side nets critically came with the knobs that I needed for the seat net.

These are the knobs.

What the knob looks like installed.

With the knobs in, I hooked up all my nets.

It looks like Subaru switched netting between now and when I got that seat net 7 years ago. I think I'll be ordering a new seat net anyway.

But now all my stuff is somewhat tidy and not rolling around all over the trunk.

I also got some Subaru bits to address my rear bumper.

In addition to the bumper getting melted by the exhaust, there are 2 brackets that hold the bumper skin on that the diffuser mounted to. One of those brackets broke and the other bent pretty bad.

Solution, I got 2 new brackets and a set of exhaust finishers.

Brackets were pretty straight forward, didn't take any pictures of that.

Here's what my bumper looked like.

The real extent of the damage. Super depressing with a proper exhaust on.

Set on of the finishers on the bumper.

Not a fan of the silver color.

Normally, 3 of the 4 screws on each of the finishers holds them on to the bumper. (The bottom inside screws are cosmetic.) With the amount of bumper missing, the passenger side finisher would only be held on with one screw. 3M tape to the rescue!

Overall, it looks much better.

My roommate already gave me **** for not painting the screws.

Swapped exhausts again.

Invidia R400 going out, Apexi RS Evolution going in.

I am a big fan of how the Apexi looks...

How it sounds... I'm less of a fan.

I also got around to reinstalling the oil cooler. Fitted it up with the most recent intercooler core. With the bumper cover off, I was also able to install the Takata SH tow strap.

IT ALL FITS!

All back together. I like how the strap looks. With a 4,000 pound capacity, it should work well too.

Tires on my 17x9 RPF1s are out of rubber. While I had them off to get the tires swapped, I put on my roommate's set of 17x8 RPF1s...

One of which conveniently went flat.

I was planning to put on the stocks. In the process, I decided to try the Wight wheels.

The fit is a lot closer than I thought it would be. I put on the rest of them.

Drove on them to work this morning. Results are as expected.

I'll be picking up my RPF1s with usable rubber this afternoon. I'll put those on along with the XP20 brakes and I'll be all set for Laguna Seca this weekend.

My secret weapon arrived last week.

Rear went together fine.

Sleeves didn't fit on the front.

Measuring the sleeve, it had a 52mm diameter.

Measuring the strut body, that had a 51mm diameter.

So it will fit. But there's a disk at the top that's a 55mm diameter.

Nothing a bench grinder can't handle.

Boom, sleeves on!

Suspension assembled.

Not on the car yet. Will probably get these on next week if I can get an alignment scheduled. Otherwise, they will have to wait for January.
