Re-wiring the cigarette lighter plug?
Is there a way to re-wire the cigarette lighter plug from a switched power source (hot only when the key is on) to an always hot configuration?

Because often, I leave my cell phone in the car overnight and I'd like it to continue charging. It's just a personal preferance thing is all.

Have a volt meter, should be easy to find a constant power.....you would be really better off, buying a cigglighter plug at Radio Shack...and wireing it straight to the batt....

Behind radio is the plug for the lighter. You can connect it the blue/red wire on the radio's harness. That is connected to a 15 amp fuse in the fuse box under te hood. It powers the radio, interior lighting and the fact Sub.

be carefull with the cigarette lighter plug ... i know it can be used as a reverse power backup or something... i dont know how this happens, but with my cell phone plug, the car actually takes the cellphone battery to power the heated seats and mirrors (when the car is off, of course)
if i leave the cellphone plugged in the lighter when the car is off. i can still move the mirors (they move REALLY slow.. but they still move) , i seems to also power the heated seat switch. it did this in my WRX, and in the STi Also ... so its a subaru thing. not just my car. |

Anywhere you get power, you can supply power back. Its your phone thats jacked up. It is allowing power to feed back which is sucking batt power from your phone. A simple diode mod would stop that from happening. so, IT IS NOT A SUBARU THING.
Yes the blue /red is constant. the fact Sub us connect to this, which is a crappy way of doing things. That is why people mention the dome light flickering/ dimning whenthe bas hits. It's not drawing that much power from the battery but it is causing low voltage on that line. This is whyt sometimes you see post about people asking why there dome light dims when teh bass hits. |

So is that why some places sell 9v battreies to keep memory staions on your radio and what not???? The cigarette fuse often shares power with other functions. Even on other vehicles. But what do I know I only been wiring stereo and alarms for 13 years.
(Cough-Newbie) Go to Radio shack and get a diode. Have someone help you put it in yout chargers plug so that your accessories don't draw off of your cell phone batt. Last edited by it8ezbngrn; 02-25-2004 at 02:13 AM. |
