If Subaru ever brought their diesel engine to the USA, I'd be looking to see if they avoided VW's stupid design mistakes.
It's possible, albeit not a diesel I run air to water intercoolers on a couple cars and have never had trouble. It's most likely the media they use for cooling. Treating it as a regular cooling system would be adequate considering the egt's are most likely cooler than I'm running at high boost.

I'm sorry, I misspoke. The VW TDI uses an air-to-air intercooler, which causes the condensation problem I described. An air-to-water intercooler would solve that problem.

Sorry for the confusion.

All these ideas sound great, but I highly doubt Subaru will offer anything more in their Impreza this generation. If they offered the TD or even the 2.5 NA with a 6MT and options available in other markets, I might consider purchasing another one. As it stands right now, I would not buy another Impreza. There are better choices out there for the money IMHO. Granted most may not have AWD, but I can live without it.

Which vehicles are you thinking of? For the $21.5k I paid for my Impreza Sport Premium, I can't think of any cars I'd prefer that are available today.

I'll be curious to see the 2014 Mazda3, but it's not available yet. If the Chevy Cruise Diesel was available here in the USA in the wagon configuration that's available in some other countries, I'd like that. But it's not coming to the US as far as I know, and if it did, it would certainly be priced higher than $21.5k.

There are plenty of cars that cost more that I like better, but I can't think of any "for the money" ($21.5k) that I'd rather drive.

Which is why I fell in love with my xv...
I'm very glad Mastro Subaru are such class act folks to deal with. I'd not have ever given Subaru another chance, but now I have a car that I love and enjoy owning.
That said- if awd isnt something you really want/need, then I think there are better options out there for you. I just really hope you end up as happy with a vehicle as I now am.
Whats going on with your car ? They got the engine in yet?
What did you get for a loaner?

Again, what are those better options for $21.5k?

I probably should of worded that a little differently. I think there are better choices out there for MY money. Honestly, I have almost no emotional attachment to my Impreza. As it stands now, I feel that it has very little personally... Almost like an appliance. My next vehicle will most definitely have more style, power, and amenities.

You are right, however, that an Impreza with more power, amenities, 6MT, etc would cost more.

As others have mentioned, I would not expect any changes to the drive line. I did hear that the '14's will have auto dimming outside mirrors. I'm not sure if they would be standard or optional. I have had the inside mirror like that in both my previous WRX as well as my current Impreza. It is something I have come to like a lot. It would be nice to have the outside mirrors dimming when some bozo decides to tailgate.

There are several cars in or under that price range that have more hp, more mpg's, more comfort, etc. Right now the local Ford dealer has Focus sedans for 15,999. Mustangs starting at 19,999. You could probably even swing for a GTI in that price range and get real torque and a proper 6 speed gearbox. So there are plenty of affordable cars that all have their own merits. Just as the Subaru's do. I happen to love the all weather/All-road traction and control that awd affords me. And I like the design and layout of the interior. So for MY dollar, this XV is a huge bargain and I'm happy.
But if I wanted a sportier, more powerful car, maybe a Mazda or VW might do the trick.
If you want a plain basic no frills car, Nissan's are practically given away in my area. The only car that ever epically failed was a NISSAN. And to think- my family had the og Datsun dealer here in lake county.

When I was last in the market and ended up buying my Impreza, I cross-shopped the Focus. Nice car overall, but I didn't like the center stack's layout, I didn't trust the reliability, and I couldn't help but feel that the car would depreciate rapidly.

The GTI has below-average reliability and almost certainly costs more than $21.5k if purchased new, so that's out of the question (although I acknowledge that, when operating properly, the GTI is a great car). I suspect that a gasser Golf would meet the price constraints, but again, it's a VW, so forget about it.

A Mustang doesn't have the cargo and rear seat capacity of my Impreza, and rear wheel drive isn't what I want living in NYS, so that's not a contender.

Other than the GTR, I'm not a huge Nissan fan.

The current Mazda3 was a consideration, but it's getting old and I don't like the front end. The next-gen Mazda3 will probably be great, but that wasn't an option a year ago when I was in the market.

Right. But if one is fed up with a subaru and wants a faster or more luxurious car, there are plenty to choose from. You and I have decided on our Subes but not everyone is going to be happy with them, and there are deals out there if awd isnt a requirement.

it takes a lot of driving to make up the $2-4K difference of a diesel motor, that saying my 2003 TDI has 230K on it and going strong with almost no issues- I wonder if my 2013 impreza will be

^exactly! especialy with diesel prices being higher than premium fuel these days. it will really take some serious milage. i did the math on my ford truck in 2004, the diesel was around $10K option and diesel was cheaper than regular at the time, $1.50, if i remember correctly. eitherway, i had to drive 100K miles until the increased MPG and lower price of diesel put me out of the red over buying one with a gas motor. these days it be well over 100K miles to recoup the money, but i guess the same applies with buying hybrid cars. only reason to buy it is you want to be green, bc financially it doesnt make sense. the truck does have 240K now..., but diesel prices are killing me, $160 bux to fill up now!

Anyone who wants a Forester can trade in their Impreza, you will get a good deal (or at least get a more powerful engine that most of you crave without losing your shirt) and the dealer would love to sell you another car and resell yours (cause they make money on both transactions)...

A general metric I've read is that the price premium for buying a diesel-powered vehicle will be recouped in approximately 4 to 5 years. This takes into account the improved fuel economy, and also that diesel vehicles tend to depreciate more slowly than their gas counterparts.

However, I can tell you that there's an emotional component that you can't put a price tag on. Having a diesel engine is fun, and radically changes the car's overall character. Whether it's the low-end torque, or the different sound the engine makes, or that you can pull right up to the diesel pump when all the gas pumps are being used at the gas station, or being able to drive 600 miles between fill-ups, owning a diesel-powered car makes for an interesting experience.

As long as that diesel car is reliable, of course.

One thing I hate- other people's diesel cars. I was enjoying a sunday drive with the windows down this weekend, and a diesel VW pulled righ out in front of me, she then floored it, filling my car and lungs with that disgusting black smoke...

Must have been an old VW, then. My MK6 (2010) TDI was super clean, and didn't smoke or smell in any way. Of course, the technology required to make it run that clean is very complex and is a terrific source of reliability issues, but it was a clean running car (when it was running).

Whatever, diesels by nature tend to belch out nasty smoke.
I hate when some guy in a propane injected F350 shows up at the dragstrip. Its putrid.
I'm not saying subarus or other brand new cars arr billowing smoke.
Just sayin that it sucks riding behind diesels usually.

That's an odd remark, because the propane injection increases diesel usage and reduces the black smoke by nature. Now. With him drag racing I'm guessing his injection pump and injectors are turned up/ tuned and or modified ( depending on year of truck, my 96 cummins had turned up pump, my new one is all computer driven so its tuned up). The propane injection helps to run more effeciently, upto 95%+ effecient when set up correctly. I'm assuming its only helping to reduce his smoke, and without his injection system the smoke would be multiple times worse.

The newer diesels can perform very well without rolling smoke like the older ones. It just costs lots more to get them there. Kinda like running a Berk exhaust vs a coffee can exhaust from pep boys. ;-)

Diesels can be very very clean and quiet, just older ones and "half built" ones roll lots of smoke.

Hey I love driving a diesel. I used to roadtrip in a canadian model 1979 VW rabbit with a 1.5 diesel and no turbo. wide range four speed. It really didnt belch smoke too badly. I loved that car.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if a Forester could match a XV in real world driving. I drove one around a few weeks ago, the Forester gets around without resorting to high RPMs each time you think about accelerating or going up a slight incline.

I really like the Impreza from a size, style, and features perspective. The whole thing is just frustrating that Subaru paired it with an engine that doesn't always work as well as it could. Seriously almost no one could be more excited for the car than I was, I bought one of the first Imprezas sold in the Northeast. I keep checking for 2014 Impreza news hoping they bring back an Impreza 2.5RS...

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure why the XV is selling as well as it is. If I wanted a small Subaru with more ground clearance than my Impreza Sport, I'd jump straight to the new Forester.

My guess is that the XV sells because it is cheaper than the Forester, and probably gets slightly better fuel economy. But if it were my money, I'd buy a Forester over an XV.

Of course, I'd configure the Forester with a manual tranny, because I only buy cars with sticks and clutches.
