Just wondering how you catless guys are getting passed down there in VA. Here in NYC we have emissions but only by way of OBD scan. Essentially if you're protuned and have no CELs you're fine if you "know a guy/shop".

so for emissions in VA, it's done or not done based on county population, nova is the most densely populated areas in va, and they require emissions to be done, many other counties that are considered more rural, do not need to get emissions done, but will still need to visually pass the state safety inspection, which requires having the cat on the car. technically you do not need to have mufflers, but the way the law was written last i checked (it's been a while), is that any aftermarket cat back is illegal, if you get pulled for this its basically at the discretion of the officer, some care, some dont.

Sounds very similiar to NYC. I'm considering moving down to Roanoke area within the next couple years. I pass emissions here in NYC no problems catless and protuned but that's because the shop I get inspected at looks the other way and I know them well. Essentially I'll need to find/do the same down there to pass catless.

your best bet is to find a place that is a small mom/pop shop or a gas station to get the safety inspection so the car wont go on a lift.....

This.

Seriously, it's sad that this is even being discussed. A fully built dedicated race car is the only vehicle where a cattless exhaust system might be acceptable. If you've invested the time and money into a long list of other mods to get max hp and still need more for your race car then fine... go cattless.

If you're wanting to go "stage 2" on your daily, installing a cattless system doesn't mean you're chasing max hp... it means you're too cheap and/or irresponsible to get a proper system.

your best bet is to find a mom and pop shop without a lift and take a drive out of NOVA to the plains/marshall/front royal ish area

Thanks! I might end up doing that. I'll be running a Cobb GESi catted DP, so hopefully there won't be any issues, as it would be nice to get the inspection done locally.

Default VA Cat Laws 2022

I just moved from NYC to NOVA and failed emissions for a Cat without “EPA stamps”? Running stage 2 pro tune, PLM power driven catted downpipe. Never had issues in NYC. Just found this thread.
Anyone have suggestions or shops they have passed with in NOVA?
