Well, I've been trying to find the Service Manuals associated with the STi at TechInfo.Subaru.com. One of the search methods, besides supplying year/model (so far, no 2004 option), is to supply the last 8 characters from the VIN (which I've just found doesn't work yet, either).

I did note the character "L" in your VIN with interest. That position is reserved for transmission type and previous Impreza VIN values included "G" for "Full-time AWD 5-speed MT" and "H" for "Full-time AWD 4-speed AT." I guess we can assume that "L" in that position means "Full-time AWD 6-speed MT."

I wonder what happed to the Impreza "K" transmission?

Sounds like a challenge to me.

Find us the story on the "K" tranny JON, you must be able to dig up something on this elusive mystery transmission.

The first part of the VIN is the country of origin, manufacturer and body shell designation.

JF1 is Japan, Subaru

GD is part of the body shell designation

For vehicles 1981 and newer:

1-3 digits is the World Manufacturer Identifier.
1st - Country of origin
2nd - Manufacturer
3rd - Vehicle type
4th-8th - Describe other features of the vehicle
9th - Check digit
10th - Model year digit
11th - Plant digit
12th-17th - Individual vehicle identification number
