Question Knocking Sound Went Away

Car Details: 2011 Subara Impreza Outback Sport

So, today while driving home my car started making a knocking sound, specifically around 3,000 RPM when sustained. Upon further investigation I discovered that my car had run out of oil... again... this time without any warning lights. I just changed the oil back at the end of Sept and have driven probably around 2,000 miles (tops) Anyway, I added some more oil and the knocking sound has gone away.

My question is, how long do I have until I need to rebuild the engine? I'm pretty sure it's ****ed.

It looks like you answered your own question.

Secondly, cars don’t run out of oil, they either leak it or burn it, most likely the latter.

If you’re not doing regular maintenance on your car yourself, then you need to hire a mechanic to do it for you at regular intervals.

If you ignore your lady, is she going to love you?

You should be checking fluids every other gas fill max, more often is better, especially if it is burning or leaking.
As to how long it will last, could be 5 miles, could be 20K miles.

That's my ****ing question. Something in my gut is telling me that I ended up with a lemon. The only reason I don't think I noticed sooner is because until recently I only really drove on the weekends.

Could you tell if it was a bottom end or top end knock? I've had a few customers continue to drive their knocking engine cars for years but I've also had some blow the next day. I'd recommend checking for oil leaks and repairing any you find, If it's all oil consumption there isn't a whole lot you can do besides check the oil more often and potentially run 5w40 instead of 5w30 but that also depends on the weather where you live.

The only real fix would be fixing the internal issues but that'll cost a good amount. But one thing you want to consider the more you drive a car burning oil the more likely you are to burn up your cat and damage o2 sensors.
