You mentioned that the oil light came on, and that you put 2 quarts in and it shut off. That led me to believe originally that it was just super low on oil. However, now that you say it's over-full I think it was seeing low oil pressure even when there was plenty of oil. That's suspicious, and either means the sensor is reading incorrectly or the pickup tube is cracked (or some other less likely problems have cropped up). What I wouldn't do is let it go - keep poking at it until you know for sure what caused the light. This is not a problem that you can leave alone and hope it goes away. Timing belt is supposed to be done at 100k IIRC. |

+1 OP
I use vei systems gauges, and I have boost, dual oil pres/temp, and an AEM wideband which is AWESOME for preventing and diagnosing problems, and necessary for tuning |

So... you are confused obviously, here are the facts laid out. Print this out and give it to your dad. We aren't misleading you, we are trying to save you $$$$.
* You are risking buying a new engine by driving more. The fact that the light is out doesn't mean anything. That light is NOT an oil level light, it is oil pressure. They aren't the same. Subaru's have a long history with the oil pickup tube cracking, and you have the early symptom. Be glad you had that, as most don't have any warning. The next symptom is your engine locking up solid because the oil pickup fell off entirely. There is absolutely no forgiveness if it cracks entirely, your engine goes from happy to broke in .5 seconds. * I agree with your dad about dropping the oil pan. It isn't quite as easy as loosening a couple of screws and out it comes. Especially if you don't have the right tools and a good place to work, including ramps/jack stands. *5w-30 M1 is bad. Just don't do it. To go along with that, subaru's tend to eat oil, and you absolutely need to check it often. Best is every gas fill. * Timing belt, yours is WELL past due, change it ASAP (as well as all idlers). The service interval is 105k miles, OR 105 months. Being an '02, yeah, you are past 105 months. |

its much easier on the earlier 2.0's. The spec was 4.8 quarts, and they were more than happy with 5 quarts. Just dump in all 5 bottles and don't even bother looking at the dip stick. |

What's going to happen is your guy is going to change the oil, won't see a light, and say "look, fixed it!" . Then a month from now the pickup tube will fall out and you'll be back for that engine rebuild. Your mechanic shouldn't be working on your car, get it to a shop that actually knows subaru's. You said yourself he isn't going to drop the pan, therefore you aren't going to know of the problem until it's too late. Last edited by s2ktosti; 12-03-2012 at 03:29 PM. |

In case this wasn't posted already, read this. Maybe print it out for your dad and buddy to read. http://www.killerbmotorsport.com/ind...ickupStory.htm
You keep saying that you don't have the money. Think of it this way. With an EJ20 motor, your motor, you can get the KillerB reinforced oil pick up for ~$200. You won't have to change any oil pans, just take yours off, install the pick up, and put the pan back on. If your oil pick up is going bad, a rebuilt motor is at least $4000. Now ask yourself, do you have the money? |

I think I read someone suggesting posting in your local chapter, that would be where I would start. Make some acquaintances and get this done. Parts are relatively cheap so if you can get some experienced locals to help you you'll be all set. I've offered my services and garage space to other mwsoc guys in the past and have taken advantage of other's help when I needed it. That's where the real value of nasioc is. Not here in General. We've pointed you in the right direction, now get some buddies together and get that car running like it should. An oil pan can be done in a day with a few friends, make sure you buy lunch and beverages. |

This. Or, since the OP JUST BOUGHT THE CAR, the engine bay was probably pressure washed causing the sensor to get moisture in it and turn the O.P light on faintly (as described by the OP) Subaru tech / service manager for 10 years, wanna guess how many broken pick up tubes I have seen? 1, and it only broke because the oil pan and subframe were nearly sheered off when the driver hit a retaining wall @ 40mph. Broken pick up tubes are not nearly as common as people make it out to be. |

You really need to stop worrying about nickles and dimes when big bucks are at risk. You have a 10+ year old car. It will require preventative maintenance as well as repairs. If your engine blows because of a broken pickup, then you are basically scrapping your car. |

Where in MA do you live? That could give us an idea of what reputable subaru shops are close by to you.
Their labor rates are usually around or lower than dealership rates. |
