$1000 for a timing belt is robbery. Not even close. You can buy the entire Gates replacement kit with the tensioner and pulleys and belt for about $300 or so. Labor should run you another $300 or so. A local Subaru shop can knock it out in an afternoon easy. Or buy a case of beer and pizza and invite over some locals and learn how to do it yourself. |

And the timing belt was a rough estimate. I don't plan on bringing it to the same guy. I would rather bring it to a Subaru place to do it. |

He changed the oil, started it, and called it good. Your "friend" isn't doing any sort of favors for you.
At this point it truly is beating a dead horse. We told you what to do to PROPERLY figure this out, you argued it with us and your father, and ended up just getting an oil change. If the motor lasts, then great it was a fluke. If the motor goes, told you so. Timing belt change is 105K miles or 105 months. Which ever comes first. Never ASSUME something is good with a car or you can put it off, otherwise a 10 dollar fix will turn into 1,000 or more. Any more questions? I honestly feel like it's not getting to you. |

Who asked you to control what someone else does?

You asked him to check the oil pick up, which is INSIDE the oil pan. He changed your oil. Do you not see how this isn't the same?
We're not asking you to control someone else. But, as a consumer and your mechanic providing a service, you can tell him what to do. An oil change is not checking the oil pick up. |

And I agree that oil pickup's are on a low side for failure for the most part, but it does happen. I also know that taking action and figuring out/fixing the vehicle the right way before something catastrophic happens is smart. |

Just wanted to weigh in on this: I've had my '07 WRX for about 20 months or so, and my oil light went on last night moving it on the street. Stopped the car, checked the oil level and nothing out of the ordinary. Matthew perhaps it WAS the moisture. I'm also in MA and the all-so-useful light was off this morning.

The light was on very faintly when I turned my car on. But you can tell it was like a light behind it lighting it up. Car got warm couldn't see anything |
