Cobb cam install,,break in period??
My self and my local Subaru mech will be installing the street /turbo cams tomorrow.Looks like a pretty straight up job.
Are there any little things(tips, tricks) i outa know about?Ive got the Torx plus and all the tools needed.Plus ive done the searchs. Cobb instructions say to let the car fast idle fr 15 min, checkfr oil leaks then take it out and drive it.Aside from checking the valve clearance after 3000 miles are there any other precautions or break in methods i outa know about.? My cars a 2000 automatic(dont say it!!!!) with Cobb intake,u/o pulley, magnecors, stock headers, high flow cat,Stromung cat back. Any help would be appreciated, thanks Rudy

If I remember right, after you install the cams, you're supposed to run the car for a long time for something to set, and then adjust the valves. It's been a long time since I read up on the cams.
Try a search in the technical archives...there should be a few threads about it. You could also ask Jon Bogart, since he also has the Cobb cams. |

Nothing special... just make sure you follow the order of instructions. I forgot to loosen the cam sprokets before taking the timing belt and then couldnt get to a bolt that needed to come off to get at the rocker arms. Make sure you have a way to label all the screws coming off the engine so you know where they go. Make sure you have a second car around so you can go get stuff at the auto parts store if you have to. And 20min@ 2000rpm is what the break in is. Oh yah... double check your valve clearances before putting the valve covers back on. We left one really loose accidently. Ummmm Oh and the dont try and use the valve cover bolt holes to secure the rocker arms... "there's the right number of holes and they thread, why does the plate keep pushing out?" opps. heh. Oh, and preassemby lube is a good thing too.... and shop towels. Lots of them.

You will need a razorblade to cut away the gasket on the camshaft cap. Make sure you "break" the crankshaft pully before removing the sparkplugs . The fast idle is for 15-20 minutes. Setting the valves is best done at about 800 miles... and again at 3k miles... and again at 8k miles... They shouldn't need any more adjustment after that. I have a writeup for setting valve lash on my webisite. When you are finding TDC just make sure to sure the camshaft alignment mark (on the spoke of the driver's side cam) and not the timing belt alignment mark.

Yeah, lots of shop towels and a drip pan. Seeing as how 2 oil drains pans were not enough and Midwayman's RS managed to still drip oil everywhere.
