Base pricing is very good, but, as usual, option packaging is problematic. If I want a moonroof on a Premium, it’s going to be pretty much $5000 more. Oof! Guess it’s a base Premium for me.

Moonroof really should've been standard on this vehicle on all trims. Pricing is good though on the lower end but leaps way to fast per trim. MPGs are actually good, on par with Forester.

Oh, yeah, I read right over that. Pretty good.
On the downside, not only does upgrading to a moonroof cost almost $5k, it also causes loss of 1MPG due to the 20” wheels it’s bundled with.

No thanks. Moonroof also takes away at least 2 inches of headroom. It should be a separate independent option on all vehicles.

I really like that the moonroof is not bundled together in the Limited package like it is on all other Subarus.

I'm not seeing octane needed to make the 21/27 or a power decrease when using 87

the size of tires makes the difference. 18in wheels will give you 21/27. The heavier 20in wheels bring it down to 20/26.

Any photoshop "experts" to show us the difference with 18/19/20 inch wheels or are these enough pictures out there to compare them out easily?

looks will be important for my wheel choice

Sorry, my “pretty good” comment was about the MPG rating. I agree moonroof should be an option, just want it to be a standalone one; don’t want it to require also paying for bigger wheels and NAV. I like moonroofs but get why some don’t.

Now all that's left is to see how reliable it turns out to be and how well it sells compared to Subaru's lineup and its direct competitors.

Keep this in mind. There are 109 variants to the Ascent. Inventory complexity comes in to play. They do this all the time. Try out some choices. Get feedback from customers(either verbally or through sales) and adjust through the years.

Having it as a stand alone option adds 8 to 16 more variants. Or more depending on how many trims you want it stand alone on. Someone mentioned it should be on a base.

Just did a rough count. SIA kicks out about 630 variants

i agree strongly. After they are purchased the customer feedback comes into play. By next year, they could make adjustments to the trims and how they are packaged. The touring has certain features that none of the other trims have.

Well it is also a way of getting you to upgrade when you really want that sunroof , etc.

I want 7 seats (not 8) and from what I can tell, I have to get option code 12 (Power liftgate, push button start, etc.) in order to get 7 seats.

Not 100% clear, but that is the way the box represents it.

You are right. It is very clear, it says if you pay $2000 you get the captain's chairs at no additional charge. That's some dealer-speak if I ever heard it.

Quote:
Premium option packages and Limited trim offer a choice of second row captain chairs at no additional charge to provide occupants with easier access to the third-row.

At $43k I'm wondering about other options. Ford Explorer with a twin-turbo v6 comes to mind. Anything else at that price point worth looking at?

The Ascent is priced in line with everything in the medium-sized CUV class. The top of the line CX-9, Pilot, etc all slot in between 45 and 50k.

I would pre-order and a Abyss Blu limited today, if it came with black leather interior. That's a deal killer

They manage to make it nearly standalone on Outback, but admittedly that is a higher volume model.

I’d like to see moonroof unavailable on base, a stand-alone option (or nearly so) on Premium and Limited, and standard on Touring.

It's up and down year to year. Used to be able to get a Limited Outback with no moonroof. Not currently. Or the "base" limited came with a physical key, now it's push button. I am sure the department that works on this is a busy one. Constantly looking at sales, researching to find what people want in general and what to put out there that satisfies the most without hurting price or profit.

Makes me feel like the STI is overpriced looking at these packages/features etc considering the engine (just tune it to 93 and for speed over towing capacity),high torque CVT vs. cheaper 6 speed, amount of metal/materials to make such a large car, eyesight, extra airbags, brakes and wheels built for the power/weight..

Was just thinking the same thing but I'm happy with my sti so it was worth it.

But for the price and size it's amazing. When you compare the price of new suburbans.
