Default Update 10/18/13 Now TP Tuned- A/F Learning Etc.

2013 WRX 93+ AEM MTv311 Map

Yesterday's #s (idle/ max negative)

1:-4.69/-4.69
A:-4.90/-5.00
B:-.70/-.70
C:-6.50/-6.50
D:0.00/0.00

Today after beginning new tank of gas. (Idle/ max negative)

1: -5.47/-7.03
A: -5.2/-5.6
B: -.60/-.60
C: -6.70/ -7.00
D: 0.00/0.00

I also began to hear what I believe is a slight whistle today during acceleration. Not the sound of the intake pulling air, but almost the same noise as you may hear from a tractor trailer accelerating (obviously not nearly as loud). I did order the TB to IC hose as suggested, however arrival date is 23-26. Will driving my car until then cause it any damage( I drive 100-140 miles per day during the work week) and is there anything else I can check in the mean time?

Thanks.

Values are borderline - may be nothing, but there is the concern on these cars of the intercooler to throttle body coupler as you noted (no guarantee that is the case here). If you have a boost leak, WOT or other higher loads is what is going to cause the biggest potential problem, so you can simply avoid WOT/heavy throttle and drive conservatively until you get it fixed. That all said, the best way to determine if you have an intake tract leak is via a pressure or smoke test of the intake tract. You can consider getting that done after you replace the coupler just to make sure. After you fix any leaks, reset the ECU via the troubleshooting menu on the Accessport and then do you A/F Learning 1 A,B,C,D test after a full tank of gas again.

Thank you Bill, glad I don't have to find another means of transportation for the time being until I get the hose in. Will avoid getting on it at all until the new hose is in and I get the intake tract tested.

Will report back on this post once all that is done for reference to others if should they run into the same problem.

I'm not sure if this was suggested by Bill or Lance or not since the thread has changed, but have you tried cleaning your MAF?

The slight squeal you're hearing is probably the turbocharger spooling. That's what you hear when you're next to a tractor trailer or other large diesel truck. I didn't hear mine much either until I installed the AEM intake - then it became much more apparent. I like being able to hear it

@loather yeah that's how it sounded at first, this one seems more dramatic.

@ AJ I've read about it somewhere but only glanced in passing. What do you use to clean it / what process? I don't wanna mess the maf sensor up too!

Contaminated MAF sensor would cause extreme positive fuel trims. Regardless, on a car this new, it would not be an issue.

FYI cleaning the MAF can be done with any of the OTS carburetor/intake cleaners you can pick up at the auto parts store. I prefer the Berryman B-12 as it evaporates completely. But as Bill said, the MAF sensor shouldn't be dirty enough to cause errant readings on a vehicle that new unless you were doing donuts in the dirt without the air filter installed (not to mention, like Bill said, the fuel trims would be opposite).

I also would like to note that I looked down at my feedback knock today and saw a max -2.80, however it was sitting at 0.00 every time I looked at it and did not catch it when it hit that value.

Make sure to be careful with the bolts that hold the IC to the turbo and the bolts on the BPV. Both of them can snap pretty easily and they don't need to be super torqued.

Will be careful about that AJ, thanks for the warning.

Btw if anyone was wondering how much it cost for a pressure/ smoke test I found a guy willing to do a smoke test for about 70$ is what he quoted me at. May have it done after I plug in the new hose. Or I may decide to reset the ecu and see how it looks for a bit.

That's pretty good. You should fill out your profile so people know where you're located. After you replace the coupler, reset the ECU so the learned AF trims will be reset. Hopefully the stock coupler was your problem. But like Bill said, there might not even be a problem at all, every car is different.

2013 WRX Stage 1 93+ AEM map.

New numbers after installing the TB to IC hose and resetting the ecu(AJ did yours go in kind of rough? We had 2 people doing it and it seemed after we connected re hose we had to have one person push the inter cooler while the other one bolted it down since it was so tight). Didn't drive a long distance but figured I would post since I have some concerns.

Here are the new a/f learning values so far:

1: -4.69/-5.47
A: -4.50/-4.50
B-.60/-.60
C:-4.40/-4.40

These are within the +/-5 which is ok for now. However I did see that I was over boosting a bit. Got 17.78 on the way to work this morning and think I saw 17.82 once this weekend. I have been taking it sort of easy but also trying to find out if there is a problem.

The second part that concerned me is that I noticed a -4.20 feedback knock. I caught the tail end of it and it was after letting off the throttle a little when I was only cruising at 60 mph in 5th gear. So it didn't happen on a shift or WOT. Also there was a -1.40 fine knock learning, however I know that is within range.

Any idea what may be up Bill or anyone else?

Well I asked the place I bought it from to do a smoke or pressure test, the technician said he could check it for me to see if he could find anywhere leaks would be coming from.

He ended up flipping the TB to IC hose I put on and said its too long by about 1/4 of an inch so he could not put the top screw in the intercooler unless I take it back off and cut that amount off. I reset the Learning again via troubleshooting hoping this would fix my A/F Learning. Everything was within -5 when I got home which is good for now, but will continue to monitor.

However I am seeing that my boost did hit a peak at some point of 18.10. I'm thinking I should probably install the Stage 1 + AEM 93 MTv311 LWG map?

Should I keep an eye on it for a little bit longer or just change the tune now?

It's 17.5 +/-1.5. So you're definitely in the norm. I'm hoping to be around 18 as well when it's cool out. I got my intake today, I'll probably put it on Saturday. What do your A/F's look like? Also, I had to cut my new coupler to fit as well, that's normal.

The stock coupler on my car was about 3/8" too short. And starting to crack. So I bought a new one (ebay special, $8) - it came about 3/4" too long so I correspondingly cut that much off. It fits perfect now and seems to have cleared up my fuel trim issues significantly. Also gave me an excuse to pull off the intercooler and clean up/tighten all the hoses.

Anyways, post some datalogs - the knock correction isn't great, but could be noise too as it's just a piezo sensor that responds to things like the AC compressor switching on and off.

@AJ They were around -3 to ~ -4.4 max so I am alright with that as long as it doesn't get much higher. I am going to monitor it over the next few days as I am driving, because I drive a ton for work.

The guy at the Subaru dealership asked me if the car still has the ability to throw CEL's with the AccessPort and I told him I am pretty sure that it does. He told me as long as the car is running fine and it's not throwing CELs I should not be overly concerned with getting perfect numbers.

Also I have a place near where I live that sells gasoline without the 10% ethanol... is this something I should consider starting to buy? I can't say exactly how good the Citgo down the road I have been using is, but I've tried to stay consistent.

I wish I could find gas without ethanol. I'd use it, for sure. One of my A/F trims was -4.3 but whenever I do logs it's never worse than -3.2 and usually in the 2's. As long as you have no knock that's always happening, I'm sure you can stick with the gas you've been using.

I just switched from Costco to Shell's Vpower since I'm putting my intake on soon. Going to see how my car runs with a different gas since I've only used Costco. Everywhere around here gas ethanol.

Seems to be working its way back down to around -5 to -6, no real idea why since the mechanic at Subaru said everything was good and tight. May have to pony up the 70$ to get the smoke test as well.

I did get the -4.2 knock this morning, which is why I brought it there to begin with, but nothing over -1.4 since.

Little frustrating when you have done everything the right way and still get odd numbers.

Your A/F Learning numbers are borderline for an aftermarket intake, but they aren't bad enough to immediately mean that you have a mechanical problem. You should still definitely look into getting a smoke/pressure test to completely rule out the possibility of a leak causing any fueling issues and give you peace of mind, but if that checks out I wouldn't worry too much about hovering at -5 to -6.

If you can't stand looking at those numbers, you could use Accesstuner Race to slightly tweak the MAF curve (after getting a smoke/pressure test of course). It's possible your car and/or intake may not be a perfect match for the cars/intakes we used to develop the AEM MAF curve. Since you would be modifying the fueling of the car, it would be a good idea to get access to an aftermarket wide-band so you can accurately monitor A/F ratios.

Anytime you make a dramatic movement with the gas pedal, it is possible to get timing corrections. So that could be lifting off throttle or mashing the throttle. If you got a -4.2 after lifting throttle (whether you shifted or not at that point), I wouldn't worry about it.

A full tank after flipping the TB to IC hose a/f numbers:

1:-3.91/-6.25
A:-3.8/-4.10
B: .50/.50
C: -5.80/-5.80
D- 0.00/0.00

Also noticed a feedback knock of -2.8 was when I shifted from 5th to 4th going up a hill. And another of -1.4 going from 4th to 5th. Although I saw that Chris said these are fairly normal. Also just wanted to note that I hear a small noise when letting off the the throttle if I only depress it slightly that makes a *tink* type of noise, almost like 2 pieces of metal lightly hitting each other. It's not very loud, but figured I would toss it out there.

Boost seems to be hitting about 17.75 up to 18.50 however I also note that it is getting colder around here and was about 39 to 40 degrees F this morning.

Could be your bpv unless you're not in boost when you hear the noise. Other than that probably get that smoke test and if everything checks out it's probably just the way your intake is reacting to your car, like Chris said.

The clink noise is not when I take the car to boost its when I give the car very little throttle and let off. It makes a light metallic noise that's kind of hard to explain.

Try it in your WRX AJ if you want, take it to about 3rd gear going 30, should be around 2000 rpm, give it slight gas to about 2200-2300 rpm and let off. Make sure no stereo is on and close your window to avoid road noise.

Even keeping my car out of boost I'm getting the -1.4 feedback knock as well, which just seems odd. I know its within the limit and I am not freaking out just unsure of what it is as I have done everything the correct way in going about this.
