30k service + injector flush = serious knock
So,
I had my WRX's 30k service done today, and besides the bill, I thought everything was cool. Well, on the drive home after picking the car up from the dealership, I was getting SERIOUS knock activity in 2nd gear, 3rd gear and 4th gear under load - but it was inconsistent. My car has knocked twice since I tuned my stage 2 map and has been running very consistently. My question is this, apparently I needed to do an injector flush and I am wondering if the chemicals in the flushing agent will cause poor combustion? I am using the same 93octane gas, which has been very consistent. For the record: - TXS stage 2 with uppipe - IC hoses - Denso IK22 gapped correctly - Grounding cables. - ECU reset was not performed during the service - Blitz LM panel air filter My dealer was instructed not to change the air filter and plugs, which to my knowledge they didn't - so I doubt it's the result of putting stock plugs in instead of 1 heat range colder like the Denso's. I didn't have my laptop with me to run logging, but it was around 3.5k RPM and I am guessing in the 70-90% load columns for fueling. Anyone had a similar experience? I will be running some logging tomorrow on the run to work. The only major change I can think of is that it was very humid and hot in Austin today. I'm already running pretty rich, I've barely advanced timing over the standard TXS stage 2 map (although I have mapped it down to the 10% load column). Cheers for your thoughts Rich |

yucky!! I hate to hear that did they itemize your bill?? I really really wouldnt put it past them to do the plugs. I assume that the boost is still the same? any overheating at all?Better yet make sure the fuel filter is in the right way and the lines are cool

Yeah, I have the itemised bill, I'll run through it and check, and I might just pull the plugs to check too. They did change the fuel filter, so I'll check that too
*sigh* - just when my car was running strong too. We might have to do some logging/tuning this weekend if you're free Edit: Boost is still the same, and I think they did a radiator flush, which will have got rid of my Water Wetter cocktail, so I'll have to get more of that in there. I'm probably going to do a pure water and water wetter mix, seeing as though we rarely ever freeze in TX. |

We don't freeze solid in Austin very regularly, the days when it does freeze, my car is sat in the garage. I might mix in a bit of glycol to keep it from freezing if it ever got cold enough to freeze solid in the garage (which I very much doubt).
The one thing I do know is that Water Wetter does not have enough of a rust inhibiting characteristic. There is another coolant mix (forget the name) that I am trying to find that is similar to Water Wetter but is a very good rust inhibitor. |

Yeah, apparently it needed it. As an update, I did some tuning yesterday and richened up the fueling .2 across the board, no more knock, car seems happier than it did before. Power is back, and it's smooth and progressive, so I guess my car just likes running pig rich.

Freezing isn't really the issue, corrosion is. Trust a materials engineer: Pure water + aluminum / copper + high temperature + a few years = BAD combo. Corrosion is the primary reason to replace the coolant regularly. There's nothing 100,000 miles does that degrades cooling performance of the liquid that much, but corrosion inhibitors are gone after a year or two. Hence the need to drain and fill with new stuff. |

Yup - right on the crossover between CL and OL. It's running fine now, I'm keeping an eye on it.

I believe the coolant that you're looking for is NPG+ --> http://www.evanscooling.com/html/npgPls2.htm
