We don't even have the STi over here yet. I'd have thought that you guys would have been able to try it out first

The cost is one thing making this not widely done.
But I was told Cobb Tuning did something like this already. not sure. |

I know of someone that did it with a rallycar, they post here. Can't recall what they said about it... but my first thought is if you reshape the floorpan with a large blunt object in a rally car it's no big deal. In a street car, maybe.
Custom driveshaft, I remember that for sure. |

Yea, that’s what I figured too. It's not something we would try, there's no point for a rally car and it's too extreme for our road car activities. The new tranny is still a bit too new for them to be available at sensible money. I think it would be a serious mod for GC8 turbo though, you’d need the driveshafts and rear diff too.

Unless something is significantly different about the GC8 turbos (ie: 2.0 or 2.2L at max versus the 2.5L motors over here), they will break just as common as normal transmissions in our GC8's.

I'm not trying to be confrontational, but the 'box is all-new. Unless you have empirical evidence to show that it's not any stronger than the five-speeds, it's misleading to say something like this. |

I can confirm that it's much stronger than the 5 speed unit

It'd probably be easier to get a Prodrive Ferrari into the US than a 22B

I was at Road Atlanta for the Petit LeMans. Yes, the Prodrive Ferrari sounds incredible. It just screams.
What surprised me most about the race was how quiet the Audi R8 is. Ross N. |

so if its longer we're looking at new driveshafts, different tranny mounts (probably), axles in front (minnumum), different rear drive ratio (easier to swap rear end) unless the final drive ring and pinion are the same...

Screams is the word, you should see the dyno figures too...
For the 6 speed, we'll certainly need the main driveshaft and rear diff (they are completely different) It may be possible to use the front driveshafts with a little mod, the rears will probably be ok though. I think the clutch is subtly different too, then there's the bellhousing - engine connection to think about. It will be a lot of effort, personally I think it would be a lot of fun though Simon |

From my days in the jeep world I have picked up quite a bit about tranmission replacement (many jeep transmissions are knowm to break under stress). From what I have heard, to retrofit an STi 6-speed into an American spec Impreza would require a lot of work, granted, but I think it would be worth it. I am assuming it will fit under the car with no floorpan modifications (correct me if I am wrong here). The belhousing from a Jap-spec trans would be needed. This should bolt right up to the engine, seeing how they are the same block. You may need a different clutch, but that is a minor detail. Because it is a different lengh, custom driveshafts will be needed probably both front and rear. With custom driveshafts, they should be able to make the axle end fit to the stock axle. Or you could get the Jap-spec driveshaft and the Jap-spec rear end (if the output yolk on the differential is different). I am not sure where the front driveshaft comes out, (don't own an Impreza and have never sen under one. I just think they are sweeeeet) but if this is different, you may need the Jap-spec front end too. (whenever I refer to "Jap-spec I mean the cars with the 6-speed in them). lots of work, but not too much. The prices I have been hearing, however are incredble. This would be fun.
Hope this helps Joe P.S. New shifter and linkage too. |

Sounds almost like my manual tranny swap except the fact that there seems to be quite a bit of variances in driveshafts, diff's and axles.
BTW Simon I have been hearing rumors of some hopped up STi 7's that have gone through 6spd's and decided to go to 5 spd dog boxes because the 6spd was only marginally stronger. |

At the Prescott Forest Rally, some of us SW guys had a chance to talk with Scheible (sp?) Lovell and a prodrive mechanic (I can't remember his name, but I think it was Ed). I think one of the first questions was how is the six speed and can this tranny swap be done? He said the new 6 speed is very tough and you could put it in a GC8 with some pretty extensive bell housing modification. You will also need to get the clutch, flywheel and driveshaft and don't forget the shifter, and maybe some other stuff you guys already mentioned. I think to expect 11K US is a good starting point.
The guy that installed one into their US wrx rally car is Prorally WRX on the boards. He is local in Phoenix and said they can do it in a GC8. If you get him on the boards, ask how much and what's involved. He is very knowledge able and can answer any question. Ron |

Hi Guys
I guess most of you realise i work for Prodrive... Knowledge is not the problem i have, it's trying to find the damm tranny, i just wondered if any of you guys had managed to track one down for sensible money. Laughing, Ed is not a mechanic he's the Prodrive account manager for the US rally program... I look after road car parts and Ed looks after motorsport, i guess he's in for some stick now, Ed the mechanic... Cheers Simon |

Hmmm, I'm actually just an idiot. I didn't even look at your ID on the left. Could I have gotten his name wrong? Anyway, for an account manager, he was good at fielding questions and was a nice guy. Maybe he didn't refer to himself as a mechanic, I just knew he was from Prodrive and assumed. You can give me crap instead Anyway, the local team http://www.alternativevehicles.com* does have at least one tranny I know of they imported. The guy on the boards is ProRallyWRX and his name is Justin. Shoot him an email to find out what it cost them. A quote from this thread: http://i-club.com/forums/showthread....threadid=87852 6 speed love Drove the WRX last night with the 6 speed for the first time. Let me just say that the response is excellent and the gears really wake the car up in the corners. Justin So much fun. Hope I helped THIS time. Ron Last edited by #522; 10-24-2001 at 11:38 AM. |

I'm pretty sure Justin put the six-speed into a GDA bodied car, not a GC8. I know the rally car he was building was a GDA. Maybe he's done the swap in a GC8 that wasn't his rally car.
Maybe he'll chime in and tell us for sure. |
