Default under power, pulls to the left, but under coast, it pulls to the right

I have a 07 sti limited with 3K miles and it's done it since day 1. took it back to the stealership and they rotated tires, adjusted tire pressure, said alignment was fine, and dinged up one of my wheels! Problem didn't change one bit. Still pulls to the left under power, and to the right under coast.

Trying to contact SOA now via email... so far, not much response from them.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

I recollect a recent thread about rear subframes being out of position or bent...

Alignment is off. When the dealership says the alignment is good, that means it is in spec. In spec is not a good alignment by any means. Take it to a performance alignment shop and have them fix it.

My new STI with 400 miles does the same thing... I have not gone to the dealership yet, but have checked pressure, and rotated the tires, and no luck. I am guessing that it is also an alignment issue. I will see what the dealership has to say...

this is very true. I don't have my alignment sheet from the local shop I went to, but subaru's tolerances are pretty wide -- even for things like toe and caster.

We have no good performance alignment shops in Tucson. I have been to 3 different shops (all touted as "good") with previous cars and none were able to solve a pulling problem (on another car) which was finally solved by taking it back to the dealership (Mazda). If anyone knows of a real performance alignment shop with true professionals in Tucson, I'd be happy to have them look at it.

(nix to Alignment Brake Suspension, never fixed a pulling problem on two vehicles, one of which the car now drives pulling and the steering wheel is offcenter.)

(nix to Precision Alignment & Brake, unable to fix pulling problem.)

(nix to Duke & Jay's Service , unable to fix pulling problem.)

I know this is a specific problem.... Back in the day I used to do some racing and I remember, "on power pulls one way, coast pulls the other" means something.. the problem is I can't recall what the cause is.

If you have any luck with the dealer, please let me know what you found. Thanks to everyone who replied. If anyone knows what this is, I'd love to hear it. For now... I'll just keep searching.

How can you tell if they are straight or not?

motor mounts ain't gonna make the car pull to one side.

it could be a suspension mounting point with free play in it. ie, control arm bushing in the front, loose trailing arm link in the rear, etc.

does the pull to the R under coast get worse when you brake?

under power the wheel moves forward and toes in, and under braking the wheel moves backward and toes out.

since it pulls L under power and R while braking, the issue is either on the right hand side front, or the left side rear.

as the RF gets power, it toes in, pushing the front of the car to the L. as the LR gets power, it toes in, pushing the rear of the car to the R. the effect is that the car rotates left, and you have to correct by turning the steering wheel R.

what is the wear pattern like on the tires, front and rear?

Sounds like you could have a problem with your brakes.

How so? A brake issue (like a stuck piston) would cause it to consistently pull in one direction, would it not?

Well I was reading on the net about a guy with some chrysler that had a similiar problem after an axle replacement and that's what it turned out to be.

Yes, that sounds like what is happening all right.

With only 3k miles it's hard to see a pattern. I just looked very carefully, and I dont know that I can really see a pattern yet. Part of theproblem is the RE70's have an asymetric tread pattern, so it's hard to see a difference at the inside or outside edges.

My 04 does this a little, the dealership said everything was in spec when I got it a few months ago. But I live in Minnesota, and have snow tires on, I'll wait untill spring and my next tire change to get it done right.

This is an incredibly long shot, particularly on a new car, but my car did the same thing when I snapped the left rear axle. Maybe you got unlucky and your car came off the ship with a bad CV?

As for alignments, I've generally had good luck at Sears. I give them the specs I want, they say, "We won't warranty this," I say, "Whatever, just align the car to those numbers," and they do it. I say "generally" because I just got it "aligned" two weekends ago and they hosed it up because the guy put my specs into the computer wrong and I didn't catch it. When it took him 4 tries to get the phone number of the guy in line ahead of me I should have realized he wasn't good with numbers and that I would need to 2nd check his work.
