Hey everyone,

I finally got around to creating an imgur album for the CAI pics that Hekler sent me.

Man just wanna say thank you guys for this info. I was getting so tired of the sucking sound on my GS stealthbox. I quickly slapped just one piece of Noico adhesive foam to the same area where OP originally put the PVC barrier, and the sound is sooo much more tolerable. I didn't even stuff any foam up in the fender yet but might do it later if I need more sound proofing. Thanks again!

Can you post a pic of where you installed that piece? Are you talking right below the stock fender shrouds? All the OP’s original pics are no longer visible

I am so confused by this thread. I thought that the main purpose of putting an aftermarket CAI is for the noise. That the gain from installing it is minimal in terms of performance.

But now everyone is trying to get rid of it? I don't get it... What am I missing?

BTW I'm all for reducing road noise. I covered all of my doors with Noico and then SoundSkins on top of that and will be doing the trunk as well.

Intakes do more than just noise, some people do it for performance and wouldn't mind making it a tad quieter

The noise is actually what's keeping me from getting one. It just sounds like a sneeze to me

So here's what i did

I stuffed some water resistant material (the wrap that comes with new cars at the dealership) to test and see if the fender area is indeed where the engine bay sound is allowed into the cabin. YES, IT IS! This solved about 85% of the intake suction noise.

So on my way home from work; I dropped by an audio shop near me and picked up some dynaliner which is meant for the hood and high heat area. Got the 1/2' size. I only did one side of the intake box and lid. Finally my car doesn't make childish noises. Took it for some spirited driving and the car FINALLY feels and sounds like a mature/tamed DD sport car. My Cobb LP BPV is still heard clearly but not as if it's right next to your door.

BTW the foam does not make contact with the filter.

Hope this helps with clarifying with the OP since I was kind of confused myself.

I agree. I actually like the swoosh sound on heavy acceleration with an intake

I like engine and intake noise...not sure why people don't. I also hate road noise though, which is why I will be doing full sound deadening.

Be ready for lots of of unbolting and being careful with plastic snap-on things.. I used some sound stuff that has two layers ( sound dampening and deadening in one shot) one kills the vibrations the other the sound, Sound Skins irrc.. lots of alcohol cleaning and lots of tapping snappy things so they dont rattle.. I also tapped wires with soft tesa tape. Along with fluidamper pulley I killed a good amount of noise.. I can still hear my BOV and air suction yet it's not ear splitting. ( warning the sound deadening stuff is heavy.. since I relinquished my car from track duty and is now only DD I dont mind 150 lbs extra, yet if you track be warned)

Thanks yes...I'm not really looking forward to all the work.
I got a big roll of MLV, some noico deadening, and a roll of 1/8" closed cell foam.

Probably going to get some butyl rope and tape, and some adhesive...i've made myself a nice little project, will probably wait until spring or some vacation time to do it.

Reviving this thread since I am going to attempt this as well. Running the Cobb Big SF intake - thing is SO loud - trying to have a conversation with someone in the passenger seat while driving is constantly disrupted by the intake noise. I'm all about the noise but wouldn't mind dropping it down a few DB. Ordered the dynaline from amazon and will start by adding it to the cobb box...Appreciate everyone's research on this.

I'm about to do the same thing with my WRX. I just had my local tuner shop install a GS CAI. OMG is it loud! I was thrilled to see you all figured out a way to tone the sound down. I can hear whooshing starting at 0.5 psi! Crazy!

I just installed the GS intake and it's not really loud at all when just doing normal driving. If I step on it I definitely hear it but with normal, non-spirited driving its barely audible.

I'm getting tuned next week or the week after so I'm wondering if my current tune is just not taking advantage of it? Will report back after tuning.
