Any downfall regarding removing the EGR? I'd love to do this mod but feel that it's a little controversial. Do you gain any power at all or is it just a pure keep things clean mod?

Well you arguably retain power you would otherwise lose due to carbon build up. So yeah I'd say you "gain" power, if your car is anything but brand new.

It will also help keep your manifold intake temps down which is good, because cooler air helps with power and will help eliminate any predetonation. During the summer I could see when they EGR was release back into the manifold because temps would increase 30+F. I think some people have even stated it helped with cruise knock.

The downsides to deleting it are: - any legal/emissions ramifications - you need to disable error codes on the ecu - potential for impacting a Subaru warranty claim There are no technical downsides to removing the EGR. |

It's not something I would do if you plan to sell or your car relatively soon or leasing it. |

How to make j00 valves happy AKA great and sage DIT motor advice
Terra Clean appears to be a bit more involved than just spraying something in your intake.

So its in direct competition with the walnut blasting as far as effort goes. Interesting to see which works better. |

I emailed SOA and asked if a valve cleaning service would be offered in the future and this was the response.
Hello J : Thank you for taking the time to contact Subaru of America, Inc. and congratulations on the purchase of your 2016 WRX Premium Sedan. As long as you take care of your routine maintenance, you will not get carbon buildup on the valves. Older direct injection systems that experienced carbon build up were so called "lean burn" systems. Unfortunately these systems suffered many times from uneven combustion due to variations in the fuel and air mixture throughout the combustion chamber. This created a mix of lean and rich conditions resulting in variations in combustion temperature and uneven burning of the gasoline. This uneven burning lead to the condensing of unburned and partially burned hydrocarbons which over time resulted in carbon buildup. Subaru engineers understood this when they created our current direct injection system. They developed innovative yet simple systems to manage and control the combustion variations inside the combustion chamber. These include features such as specially shaped piston crowns, multi-patterned injection spray, and tumble generator valves. All of which promote the precise swirling and intermix of fuel and air under the variable conditions required across the full range of power requirements. When combined with very high fuel pressures and extremely short injection duration of the Subaru direct injection system, stoichiometric combustion is maintained across the combustion chamber resulting in very even and complete burning. As a result abnormal residue and carbon deposits are not created and engine performance and fuel economy are maximized. Thank you, J, for the opportunity to be of service. Happy Holidays. Sincerely, John J. Mergen Subaru of America, Inc. Customer/Dealer Services Department 1-800-SUBARU3 (1-800-782-2783) Service Request Number: 1-12875529303 I don't think they want to admit an issue exists yet. |

Other options
Has anyone tried krank case vents for this issue. In the past, coming from the F20 on a S2000 blow by was a huge issue. I am not all that familiar with the DIT so didn't know if these would help or not.

Venting the pcv might be an option. Seems like most run a catch can. It looks like the egr has a lot to do with coating valves as well.

I'm not trying to be cheap, but $450 every year for walnut blasting is ridiculous on an economy car with a turbo.

Why would you do it every year?
You do it once you install the preventative mods, then you don't worry about it anymore. EGR Delete/EOS/Meth will surely help eliminate the buildup. The EGR delete itself is probably a huge step in removing a lot of the build up. I had mine done at 45k and they didn't look any worse then the ones at 14k. That was before EGR/meth installation. I will take a look at them again once I put around 15k miles on the car. I've only done around 2k since the cleaning. |

I used to own a 2008 Cobalt SS, which is a Direct-Injected motor. We found that walnut blasting and then adding a quality AOS was key to reducing/preventing this buildup.
Seafoam did nothing to help clean this. |

You don't "need" to do it. It's a recommended maintenance (not by Subaru), not required. As stated, I drove to 45k miles on mine before doing it and my car ran perfectly fine before cleaning them. I think the picture of my valves are somewhere in this thread too. I just had them cleaned since I was doing the meth package as well. I think for nit picky people and people who like to mod, it's worth doing for ease of mind but I wouldn't recommend doing them at 14k, or every 14k that would be stupid honestly. As seeing what mine looked like, I'd probably recommend doing them at 40k. $450 every 40k miles isn't expensive for preventive maintenance. I don't think we have enough high mileage FA20DIT's to truly see the impact and long term effect on the valves yet.

So far the theory for these seems to be walnut blast and delete the EGR. AOS may help, but its debatable.
