My dealer has about 14 on the lot. I thought of asking if I buy a Forester, would they "throw one in"?

Why did SOA spend R&D $$ on a S/C etc for the Baja?
I thought it was to guage interest in a unique, specially equipped vehicle.

How much R&D money (bean counters don't usually get assigned to R&D teams) was spent to realize the potential of offering a lower grade, utilitarian interior?

So after about 1 1/2 pages in the press release, all I came up with was that the sport does not have leather and will be cheaper...but doesn't exactly say how much cheaper. The rest is basically an advertisement for a car they can't sell.

Why not just cut the losses and stop production?

The bed is not big enough to hold much and the pass-through is still small.

Default Turbo!

I think the interest will "pick up" (pun intended!) once the turbo debuts. It's amazing how horsepower can overcome looks. If it worked for the WRX, it can work for the Baja too.

lower price, eh....ok

It better be at least $4K lower if they are still gonna push it with a 165hp/4 cylinder engine.

I don't know if anything can 'help' the baja.

I wouldn't be caught anywhere one those ugly lesbian-mobiles.

That's the Forester you're thinking of.... I think the Baja usually gets tagged with something about southern California.

The idea of recreating the Brat/Brumby was a good one, just the idea of a hybrid was bad (sort of like the Outback Sedan). It would have been fine as a stripped out pickup truck with 2 drs.

Of course, if you don't try and fail you'll never succeed.

SOA got stupid with the baja...

All they needed to do was drop the body cladding, keep the car simple, and toss in the H6... They would have sold sheep loads of em.

The fact that none of you like it means that Subaru is doing it's job in terms of diversification of the brand. Like it or not the fact that Subaru markets (and sells) to lesbians is one of the things that makes it a great (and profitable) company. Why would Subaru make two cars that appealed to male 20-something Bulletin Board System junkies?

Pesonally, if I could afford to have two cars in the family - I would buy a Baja in a second. The fact that they're dropping the price is great, and is tempting me to trade in the WRX. The kneejerk response I see here to the Baja just makes me want to get rid of the WRX.

fact is no one is buying these things. Obviously it's not just "male 20-something Bulletin Board System junkies" who don't like them. Even the lesbians are holding out for more power.

I don't know how many people I've heard at work/friends/people in parking lots/dealerships comment on how AWFUL the Baja looks.
I know my dealer hasn't sold much of 'em.

I think half of it is the yellow color. The dark green ones are almost tolerable.

They don't offer a dark green Baja.

If the Baja's engine produced around 260 HP, NOBODY would be sneering, despite its gawdawful cladding.

Jon, I disagree, if Pontiac was to drop the ole 455 H.O. in the Aztec i dont think youd see em at the track very often.Same fr the Baja .Just plain ugly.Even lesbians have taste (i think )

Seems like people all over(not just here) are having that same"kneejerk reaction".Makes ya wonder why Subaru would be dropping the price(and options) on a car they just released.
So go trade in your WRX and get a stripped down Baja,im sure you will be happier. But plan on driving it till it drops, cause come tradein/resell time you aint gonna get much

Since the Baja came out I have only seen one on the road and I live in Colorado, Home of all wheel drive vehicles. I thought it would be the right car for the right person, kinda of like when the short bed pick up's came out. I think it would sell at a much lower price, its just not worth 25,000.

I agree with others (in thread other than this) on how Subaru is currently not doing a good job marketing the Baja, and that they brought the original one at too high a price point. I think there's a market for the vehicle - but it may not be the 25K price point they were hoping for. But I definitely don't agree that it's doing poorly simply because it doesn't have 250hp or have a good towing capacity. I think their market are people who would be thinking of an Outback or Forester, but also would ideally like a truck... Well hey, here's an Outback with a bed - cool, huh?

Here in NC (particularly Western NC, in the mountains), they're doing pretty well (Prestige Subaru in Asheville says they can't keep them on the lot) and I'm not surprised. If any place was the perfect market for the Baja, it's NC. We've got a lot of outdoorsy types who Mountain Bike, Kayak, etc. - the Baja is great for them. And yes, we have a fair share of lesbians (which I believe is a good thing).

Making a scaled-down version is fine if you're taking away things that are usually options anyway. Leather? You can't even get it on a WRX, why is it standard on the Baja? Very strange. I think the key to having the Baja be successful is to try to bring the price closer to 20K, and market it better.

This was the first thing that I thought about upon seeing the Baja specs. It's about time they made it financially more accessible to a wider range of buyers.
