Subaru Banner I just want to say THANK GOODNESS!!!...

... for All Wheel Drive!!!

I was coming home tonight and coming up on my right turn onto a main road going about 40. Being used to summer driving still I was ready to take that corner quick like usual. Well right on the corner is a store and they had the auto sprinklers on and it made a puddle right in the turn.

As I was going around the turn I realized its only like 15 degrees outside and that puddle was turning into ice. (Keep in mind I still have my 17" rims and summer tires on) and I feel my two passanger side tires start to drift. There was a big truck waiting to make a left and I was going sideways for him. (All this took place in mili-seconds) but my driver side two tires grabbed on and made the car straight and keep going like it was no big deal at all.

So basically I did a pretty cool drift around the corner without even trying. If it was a FWD car or worse a RWD car I would have surely smashed into that truck on an angle... that would have not been pretty!

So thanks to Subarus Awesome AWD technology still alive at the worst but no harm was done what so ever

Thats all.

AWD goes !w00t!

i love how easy it is to bring yourself back and forth from the threshold of traction balancing oversteer/understeer is just so effortless in this car if you're going the right speed.

Monkey you got a fwd 94 Legacy wagon? That was my first Subaru, its still in the family. Mine had the 5speed. You could utterly waste the front tires with too much throttle, spinning and understeering like a whale through turns. You need to trade up if you can to some awd goodness, its a whole different car.

I know. I'm broke, though. I'm actually saving up for a new (to me) scooby. Hopefully a '98 or '99 RS.

Were you still giving it gas after entering the turn too hot? If not, AWD did nothing for you. You would have done the same in FWD, RWD, or FlintstoneWD.

Well yeah I was still giving it gas, otherwise I would have just slid around the corner... THAT was my point.

I think what he's speculating, VetteVert, is that with RWD, the back end would have stepped out, and with FWD, the car would have plowed, continuing to go straight. That only with AWD can you give the car gas to (sometimes) rectify a difficult situation.

Going into a corner too hot is another matter altogether. My personal theory, learned by becoming a passenger while holding the wheel of my (long gone) Ford Probe GT, is to always leave plenty of margin for the proverbial "merde" that can, and often does, happen.
