Default 01 OBS ej22+t California Smog

So I picked up an 01 Impreza outback sport as a turbo project but decided to make it my daily. I have almost everything ready to go forward with the +t but I'm just wondering if it will have problems passing smog, mainly the visual aspect, here in California. Anyone know anything about smogging NA+t conversions here?

Morning!

If you are adding a turbo to a NON turbo car, then you will NOT pass smog in Cali. The Only way to accomplish this and to get legally bar'd is by installing a NEWER turbo engine in stock form from a WRX/STi (ECU, motor, exhaust). I did it 2 times without issue. Keep in mind the motor has to be bone stock just as it came from the factory for the donor cars model year. Once you get the sticker, you are good to go for the life of the vehicle. Do keep in mind you will still need to pass smog every 2 years like everyone else. SO modding is fine, but you will need to return to stock when you smog is due.

Hope this helps...

well if you want to only add a turbo and passed smog what you can do is take the turbo setup from a 1991 to 1994 legacy sports sedan aka the turbo legacy and you should be able to pass if not get Bard to pass you're not going to make much horsepower but it's a turbo I have one if you wanted as well the 91 had a turbo that fed directly into the intake no intercooler in Japan they had water cooled that you could source I think I have the stock downpipe to but it's also the same as current WRX / turbo Subarus

easiest way is to get a ej205 from a jdm and use the ecu from a 2002 to 2005 wrx. go to the ref and get a little plaque from the ref that will make your car compliant. but you wll need to get everything from the air box to the cat. some of the laws are you can not get an older engine into a new car. its gotta go the other way.
