Default Mercedes-AMG C63 successor to be hybrid – Tobias Moers

Quote:
While rival German carmakers have ditched sonorous V8 engines for blown six-cylinder options, at least in the small performance segment, Mercedes-AMG has stayed the course with the rear-drive C63 – at least for now.

With stringent emissions requirements needing to be met by all manufacturers, as well as the fast-track to electrification, the days of AMG twin-turbo V8s seem numbered. That’s according to Tobias Moers, head of Mercedes-AMG.

“I think the formula is perfect for now, but for sure we need to have a close look at viable alternatives, because we have to be creative and I’m chasing performance and that’s not strictly linked to the number of cylinders,” he said, speaking with CarAdvice at the New York motor show.

“If you apply proper intelligent hybridisation or electrification to a car which is capable of having an always-on strategy regarding the battery and the whole system, then it’s amazing what you can get out of them.

“Which means for sure the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 will be a hybrid – that’s now a given,” he said.

Rear-wheel drive has also been a hallmark of the C63 – Moers calls it “the wild child” – but he hinted that could change change in the next generation.

The facelifted C63 S unveiled in New York uses 25,000 new parts, but the 375kW/700Nm V8 engine’s output remains unchanged. Moers saw no reason to increase those numbers with the latest version.

“I think it’s a perfect combination of power output and gears, now with the nine-speed box, which offers the perfect range of gears. It’s better sorted out on a race track – you’re always in the right gear, coming out of corners, for example,” he told us.

“The C63 was always well balanced, but now it’s better because we increased the driving dynamics, added a little bit more comfort and it’s faster on a racetrack with better traction on the rear axle. You can get back on the throttle mid-corner and nothing happens, which is great.

“We applied some features from the GT R, too, like our integrated vehicle controller, which is part of the ESP. We’ve also changed all the suspension settings with a new anti-roll bar and new dampers, spring rates along with geometry changes for really, more comfort and faster lap times.”

We asked Moers about the effect hybridisation and electrification will have on AMG’s trademark exhaust note, given this is a fundamental requirement for most buyers.

“Obviously, if it runs electrical then there’s no AMG thunder. We are facing severe regulations, especially in Europe, but sound is very important for our customers, no doubt about that. However, I’m confident that we will find the right solution for that issue”.

He also told us to expect something very different in the next SL roadster, which may well become an exclusive AMG model – but not in the same form as the existing car.

“There’s a lot of potential with the next-generation SL to be honest. It’s going to be something very different from the current car.”

not looking forward to electrification.

How’s it been on reliability? probably very low miles I see New York City listed. That’s one ride I always got my eye on. I’m close to pulling the trigger on one as a Daily. Grab 8coffe can plugs while you’ll still can. Would you agree with what the author stated about the 9speed uni?

Reliability has been fantastic.
This is my weekend toy all upstate highway miles.(I'M A BIG DIY CAR GUY)
would love to drive it everyday but this a car you really don't want to disrespect on bad weather conditions.(massive torque)
The new 9speed has it's issue not surprising since it's new (BUGS)
In time I'M sure mercedes will work it out.
go for it by a brand new left over, you can save up to 12.000 off on retail price.

Lost in translation? I don't want "nothing happening" mid corner.

Yes, horrible - supposedly can't even turn it all off anymore either - I will put that to the test when I get the wagon. Maybe I'll end up driving only in "drift mode"

Default Next AMG C63 to ditch V8 for Hybrid Four Cylinder Engine

Next AMG C63 to ditch V8 for hybrid four-pot

The new EQ Boost hybrid drivetrain is also planned to run in combination with Mercedes’ nine-speed torque-converter MCT Speedshift gearbox.

Nothing is official at this early stage, but Affalterbach insiders with knowledge of AMG’s new model plans suggest the new four-cylinder hybrid drivetrain will match the existing second-generation C63 4Matic’s V8 engine in outright power at a maximum 503bhp. This is despite a 50% reduction in swept capacity and cylinder count. With the benefit of electric boosting, it has also been conceived to deliver up to 553lb ft of torque – a 37lb ft increase on today’s C63 S 4Matic.

Details remain scarce, although the new driveline is thought to adopt a lithium ion battery of higher capacity than the 0.9kWh unit used by the CLS 53 4Matic+. It is also expected to use a more advanced energy recuperation system that harvests kinetic energy at each wheel.

One of the most significant advantages in the adoption of the new electrified driveline is a reduction in weight over the front axle of the new C63 4Matic.

At 160.5kg, the M139 four-cylinder unit weighs 48.5kg less than the M177 V8 engine used by today’s C63 4Matic. Even with the addition of the hybrid architecture, including a disc-shaped electric motor and power electronics, the overall weight of the new powerplant is claimed to undercut that of today’s unit.

Additionally, the new powerplant’s weight is concentrated lower, which aids efforts to bring about a lower centre of gravity for the new model, theoretically improving its agility and body control. Further development plans for the next C63 4Matic include a new four-wheel drive system to provide a fully variable apportioning of power front to rear. This will allow AMG to engineer the new model with rear-wheel-drive properties in certain driving modes, much as with the larger E63 sibling. AMG CEO Tobias Moers told Autocar earlier this year that all next-generation AMG models will adopt this system, moving away from pure reardriven models due to customer demand for all-wheel drive.

The decision to provide the C63 4Matic with four-cylinder power was apparently driven by Mercedes-Benz as part of rapidly escalating efforts to reduce fleet CO2 emissions while harnessing the engineering lessons pursued during the development of the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar.
