Just noticed today. On the SOA website, the Crosstrek is rated at 33 mpg highway which seems reasonable given the higher stance. Then I looked at Edmunds and both the 2012 and 2013 Imprezas are listed as getting 25/33 mpg. If you look at the full review that Edmunds did on 10/11/2011 they wrote "Getting the CVT improves those estimates to 27/36/30"
Seems that SOA is lowering the numbers.

Is it 33 mpg for MT and 36 for CVT? They might say its 33 because it comes standard with MT.

The 2013 MPG numbers are up on fueleconomy.gov, they are the same as 2012.

For the last 3 tanks of gas, I've been getting ~8% better mpg. This is without any change in driving pattern or weather changes. The only change that I can attribute it to is that my last 3 tanks of gas were regular 87 gas from Rotten Robbie. Previous to this, I was using regular 87 gas from either Unocal 76, or Valero. The increase in mpg was instantaneous. The mpg meter started showing ~2mpg higher results soon after I got the Rotten Robbie gas. At some point I'll fill up with Unocal 76 gas again to see if my mpg would drop when that happens. Then I would know for sure that it was the gas that made the difference. Our impreza is equipped with knock sensor, so if it detects knock, it will automatically retard timing and make the engine less efficient --less mpg. I'm wondering if the people getting 40+ mpg are putting in 89, 91 gas. Or maybe they are in states which do not mandate ethanol in gas. Here in California, ethanol blend is required by law. For sure ethanol blended gas will result in lower mpg then pure gas. For the record, my last tank of gas gave me 32.1 mpg(dash), 30.2(calculated). Less than 50% of my drive is freeway. I'm slightly over the EPA estimate of 30mpg mixed. I want to try 89, 91 gas at some point also to see if I get any boost in mpg from that. The other point is tire pressure. I'm running 40 psi to help reduce rolling resistance. I've had problems with running manufacturer's recommended tire pressure in the past. They always seem too low and I end up with tires that wear out on the outer edges, but ok in the center. Hopefully running 40 psi tire pressure will result in more even wear and better mpg. I've seen in Prius forums that people are running 50 psi over there and are not having any issues with tire wear. They claim to get 0.25mpg for every psi added. |

I also tried higher tire pressure, no improvement and handling was worse. You can do what you wish though with your tires. I do however get better mpg with real gas and not the crap with 10% ethanol. It doesn't to seem to be 10% better like previous cars, but still 1.5mpg and only cost an extra 0.60 per fill so definitely worth it |

714 miles spread out over a year isn't enough for me to go out of my way to look for ethanol free gas, especially when it's costing more at the pump every time! Last edited by jsteg; 09-19-2012 at 06:47 PM. Reason: Recalulation |

Knock sensor - is that peculiar to CA cars? Supposedly I have CA-grade emissions system in my 'preza but first time I've heard of it. Never given much credence to the idea of boosting mpg with octane (didn't work for me after a tank of 89), but maybe... I'm not as extreme as you, but I have been overinflating for years. I run 36 front/34 rear to get a bit of lift without stiffenning the ride too much. Side note, it took me 2 or 3 weeks to check the tire pressure after buying the car, and when I did I found the dealer had not deflated from the "shipping pressure" (their term) of ~48 psi! No ill effects on the tires I could see. |

For me it is a no brainer, unless I'm out of town, i know where to get ethanol free gas, and i fill up there everytime as it is on my normal commute. If I'm out of town, I'm not searching for it |

My problem is that the only convenient gas station I've found that sells ethanol-free gas only sells it in its Premium gas product. The regular and mid-grade gas have ethanol. I don't want to pay for Premium in order to also get ethanol-free gas.

How does anyone how much ethanol is mixed in with gas?
Is there some law that requires gas stations to post this info at the pump? Some people say that premium gas contain less ethanol, but how would we know for sure what we're getting. |

Here in Toronto all gas has, by law, up to 10%. From what I read the low end 87 has 10 mid has like 7 and premium has 5,approximately. There are a few stations that carry super 94 but people say it still has some in it and at the moment costs 1.53 to 1.64/litre depending on the day lol.

It propably would be cheaper buying a sti than to build an sti. From the way you post my money is that you don't know your mechanics very well. But in short, your answer is no. mom and dad bought u the wrong car and now you are trying to "build" the car u want. |

If you *want* better mpg, you'll only get it by slowing down! I've done the variations, and it is the number 1 influence on mpg. This car does NOT get good hwy mpg. I went for a 140 mile strict hwy drive last weekend, 62 mph actual, 36.3 mpg indicated. Driving 40 miles stop-and-go commute to work this week, 55 mph top speed, I showed 36.0 mpg. I topped 41 mpg indicated one saturday, driving 5 under the limit to work.

exactly. if you want better mpg with the loss of awd then that exists. but i wanted decent mpg w/ awd and I have no complaints.
