Just a side note- I put DWS's on my car and noticed a definite crispness in handling compared to the S34's. On the downside road noise increased and with the tires at 34/32 a little harder ride/ I'm sure they will be better in the snow, but to be honest the s34 is a good tire. I installed my S34's on my son's 10 prez and it made a big difference compared to the OEM Bridgestones.

getting way off topic:
???? DWS are known to have a soft side wall. |

The Yokos are not a good tire if any snow or slush is around. In many situations, the Impreza is significantly worse on bad roads than the DWS equipped car. There are a few people that defend the Yokos, and I am glad they find the Yokos acceptable, however in my experience the Yokos are some of the worst all-season tires I have ever had for winter driving. I've been living in Maine and driving in the winters for over 15 years. Heck I have an old Outback with "What are the cheapest tires you have?" on it, and that handles snow and slush much better than the Impreza on the Yokohamas. |

Since this is a MPG thread I will say that the Yokos are designed for higher MPGs. Change them and expect the possibility of a decrease in efficiency. I'm just sayin'.

Not quite. It is constantly calculating and altering the ratios based on prevailing conditions. It is not an on/off switch. It is more like a constantly moving target. But yes, under steady cruising it will behave mostly like a fwd to optimize mpg.

I also agree that they are part of the lower-mpg equation, although, I don't think anyone would really notice too much in the real world when switching as long as the size is exactly the same. The stockers are definitely not the BEST tires out there, but I'd buy a low-mileage set of take-offs if the price was right. |

I'm thinking about ordering some rally armor flaps, I wonder if they will have any effect on mpg's. I know it would be minimal. But I wonder, since this car was apparently designed with lowering wind resistance in mind. A new stickier set of tires, the mudflaps, and crossbars (if I do add them), and I could see losing a mile per gallon.

probably more. since the stock yoky are considered to be low rolling resistant and the crossbars are shown to decrease mpg by a % not not just 1 or 2 mpg. and mudflaps, you bet will be the same as crossbars. look for about a 5-7% decrease.

I don't have a problem with the Yokohamas. Not saying they are the greatest, but they suit me fine. I drove in light now last year with no issues. Will see how they are in deeper snow this year (maybe if it snows).

Assumption: Avid S30 tires on Impreza Premium. Diameter ~24.9 inches, 10/32 tread depth, driven to 3/32 tread depth. Circumference drops by about 2.3%. So, when the tire is ready to be changed, the odometer will still be calculating slightly low (0.4%). If you take the average between 2.7% and 0.4%, over the life of the tire, roughly 1.5%-1.6% underreported mileage. |

So I am not sure if I have the same issue. I bought my Impreza in April 2012, and I have been running it for the last 5 months. I figured I would google this issue and found this thread.
How do I tell what update is on my computer? Is there a way I can check? The reason I am asking is because the dealership is saying that the car does not need the update. The issues that I have been having are very similar to the issues that everyone else has been reported so far. One of the biggest and the most annoying issue is (again my legacy 2011 model does not do this and my Honda accord which I know doesn't have a cvt transmission doesn't do this as well), is when I am going down a very steep hill, the rpm's jump to around 2.5k-3k. The engine is making a lot of noise. It does this all the time, even with small hills as well. My foot is not on the accelerator, I just let go of the accelerator and am not even breaking. My other cars usually go up on speed when I go down hill, but this car does not which is really weird for me? Can anyone help? Thanks. |

Satisfied with mileage
Well my mpg has been pretty good since I passed 4k miles (and the first oil change). On a trip to up-state NY with the family, four in the car and full luggage, uphill on the Pike from MA, 75 mph and AC blasting, we got 30.4 mpg on the tank - darn good! Since then I'm averaging around 34.5 at each fillup, and I've hit 37.2 over 444 miles commuting when "hypermiling". Put areo roof rails on two tanks ago and still trying to decide what effect it's having - maybe .5 to 1.0 mpg off, no more. Definitely possible to meet epa mpg estimates. Cheers.

For the heck of it, i was going to enable the shift light on my car and try driving it based upon the computers recommended shift points and see what kind mileage results

Just had my car for a week, ran for 305miles with mix local and highway, only get 25MPG. Can't wait the breakin period over, so I can see some 30+MPG
