I can beat EPA numbers easily with the Outback AND with 3 other new cars I have owned since 2007 (Corolla, Jetta, and F150). With the Impreza I have beaten the EPA highway MPG once in 16K miles of 90% highway driving.

I think a lot of it is driving habits and gas quality. But he was specifically complaining about a fwd vehicle beating epa estimates vs an awd vehicle not living up to them(in his mind, not necessarily true because i don't know his driving habits and if they are similar to epa or not, but i gather not) |

Where I live it is all E10 gas. The nearest fueling station with regular gas is in another state almost 75 miles away. |

As much as I'm satisfied (if not happy) about the MPGs is probably because I settle back to the AWD argument...but why on earth should we have to? EPA ratings are tallied in the same manner regardless of a vehicle's drive train, so why are you trying to take it into account as to why people aren't satisfied with the real-world numbers from the impreza? It isn't as though Subaru were able to run the EPA test using a 2wd version.

Then maybe people should compare other similar AWD vehicles such as the 2012 Honda CRV 23/31 and Nissan Rogue 23/28 to find out if those owners are finding big discrepancies between EPA estimated Highway and actual highway. I personally don't care because I'm satisfied with the numbers on my car and the 36mpg seems realistic enough for me.

New guy here (2012 Impreza Sedan Limited)
So Far I have been fueling up around the time the dash has one bar left. I am only on my 3rd fuel up I usually fill up around 12 gallons. The first two fill ups I have had were at 340 miles at 12.1 gals and then 330 miles at 12.3 gals (mostly inner town stop and go driving ) Now.. I just took a round trip to Winchester VA(204 mi total) and with the tank at 50% I am already at 260 mi which I would say is a pretty decent improvement. I honestly assume as long as I get anywhere between 310-360 per fill up I am satisfied. (this is my first Subaru) |

I'm complaining! This car sucks!!
Of course I'm kidding. However judging from my two STI's and how impossible it is to hit the HWY mileage, I kinda expected this. It beats my old '00 Infiniti G20, so I'm happy in that aspect. |

i agree! look at this crappy mpg I got today on my way home. this was after I parked the car. 10miles were in town driving, the other 40 were highway doing 75mph with about a 15mph tailwind.
and i know from experience in zero wind my car gets pretty much 31.5mpg at 75mph. |

it's no 40mpg, but if I wanted that I would have pulled the trigger on a Mazda3. I decided to take the mpg hit for the awd and I am glad i did. it will be great this winter, and it has proven plenty fun in the rain and on gravel i will admit the advertised mpg is what tilted the scales for me, but as i have said all along, i wasn't expecting more than 30mpg i guess i could have slowed down to like 60mph and gotten upper 40's but i feel like crap with this cold and I just wanted to get home. good thing our interstate speed limits are 75 in this state. |

Anyone else use cruise control all the time?
Basically I put it on when ever i'm on a stretch over a few miles. Better than trying to feather the throttle all the time. It seems to help with MPG even when covering not so long distances and simply using th trigger to accel/decel when need be. |

However, my Corolla gets about 40 mph at 80 mph (averaged both ways) on my 100 mile one way commute, and I am lucky to get 30 in the Impreza. Something is rotten in Denmark (errh Washington DC - but we knew that anyway...) Same test numbers on two different cars, drastically different real world numbers. I can get 50 mpg in the Impreza at 55 mph, but that's not real "highway". |

I bet you can't get 50 MPG @ 55 MPH.

Not only that, but to prove it I'd have to do a two way run with video. What do you get on the flat at 55, cruise control?
Seriously, it does great at really slow speed, but get it up with traffic out west here and it just s_cks. P.S. I'm reading off the Scangauge. |

MPG data from:

If you don't use cruise control, the numbers look right. Cruise control still doesn't beat a good driver. |
