Fear of going for a tune?
Going in for my first tune, I am full of anticipation but also apprehension. I do everything on my car by myself and I am afraid the tuner will find and hopefully not find I installed something incorrectly. At the same time I'm filled with excitement to see what my hard work will result in and have a smoother and more powerful car afterwards. Any of you felt that way before your very tune?
Jeff

Yup, I'm always nervous about what I do to my car, I never have it when I work on other people's cars, just mine. Look at it this way, it's better to have your tuner catch something that you did wrong than to find out 50 miles down the road with a blown motor...

There's no reason to be scared if its a reputable tuner. It's better to feel stupid for awhile if he starts redoing your work than deal with a popped motor

When you get to the shop, ask for a boost leak test.
THEN you will feel more at ease. Funny story, when I got my tune I was nervous too. Got boost leak test, fixed the leaks in 5 minutes (needed new clamps), and hopped on the dyno. Felt good. Tuner comes back 30 minutes later and says the dyno broke........ anxiety all over again. |

Yep, and it didn't make it any easier when the tuner didn't talk while he was tuning for the first half hour. Just kept running it and focused on the readings. I was just thinking "Is that good or bad?" Then we started talking as he got a little closer to the final tune. Put me more at ease then. Just be up front with what you are looking for and call or email them for advice weeks in advance. I ended up gapping my plugs a little wider than he preferred, because I waited til 2 days before, but it all worked out. Car feels waaayyy better now and runs much better too.

Whew, I think my heart kept stop beating every time the tuner would shut off the car (for something). Just got back and good news is the motor is stout and made modest power for a V7 EJ207. The bad news is that my AVCS is eratic, going anywhere from 5° to 30° advance timing. Looks like my wiring is off somewhere, it's just weird that it doesn't trigger a CEL if the AVCS was not functioning fully.
I explained to him prior to the tune that I am looking for a conservative tune for my daily driver and wasn't looking for absolute HP. I also specified that I wanted the car tuned for crappy 91 octane gas. He did just that and car feels smoother all the way around, but once you put pressure on the right pedal, the rush is unbelieveable. Tuned: 17psi Max HP is @ 6400, max torque at 5100rpm Glad my engine is capable of spinning up to 8K -Jeff |
