He told me that the cost of doing the machine work and upgrading the turbine wheel comes to $325 like you see on their site. Thats if you send them a brand spanking new td04. He said you don't have to have your used turbo rebuilt but of course it is recomended. He said the total cost of the upgrade and rebuild comes to anywhere between $400 - $500, which to me still isn't bad. If you want it ported you gotta tack on another $95. turn around time is 7-10 days, you ship them your turbo, they upgrade it and send it back.
Thanks! I'm going to assume its tax free unless you live in the same state (at least everything that I purchase online out of state is). Did he mention what the rebuild consists of?...usually just seal kit? Or is there more to it?

I'd still like to hear turbo mileage and costs paid by other owners in this thread.

As for the port job, I think we might be better off putting that towards the rest of the mods. If you do the port along with a full rebuild, you're sitting in 16G price territory. To me that's a no-brainer!

How would these compare to the VF-48?? I was going to buy the 48, just got some Helix 800s and fuel pump. Or might it be a good choice to go the 19t route. I have an 02 wrx, sti tmic, TBE, UTEC, all the usual first mods.

I've been watching this thread for a while now. It all comes down to spool or power. If you want spool, then this is for you. It won't make a ton of power and will lose in 1/4's to 39's, 16's anything of that sort. Just won't have the trap speeds. I really don't care to have full spool before 3300. I'm going with a 16g very soon just because I'd rather pull to redline and instaboost isn't my thing. For the price, a used 16g is around $500, and they can be rebuilt...so it's a no brainer to me. Although I'm very interested on seeing what this does in the quarter, since dyno's won't tell us much. Or a dyno comparisson with the same car, on the same dyno with same mods.

Anyone know if the 19T wheel and parts related to rebuild is available for purchase?

I have a co-worker with the tools and knowledge to do the labor, but I don't know how to get the parts.

Ebay has a 19T wheel and a TD04 rebuild kit. Go to Blouch's site and watch the 19T video. It doesn't show you every single step, but gives insight into what needs to be done. I love that video!

Sorry for jacking 19T's thread but it has relevance.
This is with many important supporting mods. 270 ft lbs. torque @ 3k on e-85 @ 20 psi. I haven't taken it to the 1320 because I don't want to grenade my 5 speed, but I am considering doing it anyways. I planned on doing the 6 speed, axle, hub, suspension, brakes, etc. swap next year, but there is an abundance of them here for 6k so maybe I'll just go see if I can get a good time and risk it before it gets too wet here.

When i talked to mike on the phone he did say a few specifics of what they do to rebuild the turbo but honestly i really can't remember sorry i'm going to be calling him again this week with a few more questions that i have after watching the video they have on their site, which by the way for anyone considering this i would highly recommend watching it. I found it very informative.
http://www.blouchturbo.com/video/
just click on the 4th video from the top

I was suprisied to see how much they are actually doing, and the upgraded compressor wheel and exhaust wheel are much much larger. I'll post up what i gather after i talk to him again.

The turbo in the video is one for a Mitsu 3000 GT. I spoke to Mike from Blouch, and he said that the upgrade on a Subaru based TD04 is only the 19T compressor wheel.

The upgrade of the 3000GT turbo also included a TD04HL wheel, and the subsequent machining of the hot side to accomodate it. You can find the cost of that turbo on Blouch's site.

For the Subaru based turbo, the HL wheel is an additional $200 or so on top of the 19T upgrade ($325) and rebuild of the turbo(XXX).

All together with the 19T upgrade and turbo rebuild would be $400-500.
The above plus the HL wheel may be $700 or more.

Porting is an additional $95 and is only done on the turbine side of the turbo, not the compressor side.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hope this helps,

Kon

You are correct konmann. The TD04HL exhaust wheel upgrade is not done on the Subaru turbo, but I figure the rest of that video can pertain to us.

Thanks for the honesty subydude! I do the same thing sometimes. I ought to call Mike too. Seems like you get a lot of questions answered really quick. Looks like I need to find some spare time at work

From the looks of it, seems like buying a brand new small 16g might be a better route for me. Sucks that the 19T upgrade and rebuild cost up to $500 dollars.

This is why I want to hear from the owners that replied in the thread. They know exact prices for the upgrade. I have a feeling if you take your working TD04 off of your WRX and send it in, it won't cost the full $500....I'm thinking more of $395 like someone mentioned earlier in the thread.

However, I see your point...if your spending $400-$500 to rework your current turbo, its not much more to get a more efficient exhaust housing with a TD05-16G. Like Unabomber said in another thread about the 19T, it depends on if you want top end or quick spool.

See this is where i run into a problem. i'm a major perfectionist, and i'm going to want the upgraded exhaust wheel, compressor wheel, rebuild kit and it PnP. sounds like i'm a better canidate to grab myself a small 16g and i'll just port it myself.

That's my post on the Saab forum. Cost me right around 550 with the shipping, porting, upgrade, and rebuild with the 'monster bearings' or whatever their td04 rebuild service consists of. This was with a worn out turbo I had sent in as a core. The 20psi holds to 5800 rpm and tapers to 17.5 at redline (in pa summer heat). The spool is hard as a vf39 and quick as the 13t. Even though the boost tapers off, the car doesn't 'die' like the 13t does. It pulls nicely through 6k. I found that driving a vf equipped 2L is frustrating on the street, and this is night and day compared to that. I'm street tuned so the power numbers ar extrapolated from a 250/250 dyno pull I did with no fans on the car, f'in slowboy, and the data I get on a road pull, but 270/270 is where it runs. I use an MBC/GMBCS hybrid boost control, prosport headers with wrap, short dp, gutted cat, and bosal 3" catback, with an old Vishnu large tmic. Stock intake including silencer and snorkus. Haven't modded the car in over a year. This was oddly satisfying to my mod addiction.

Thank you for the info ISIS
Quess i will send my spare TD04 to Blouch anytime soon
So you did $95 P&P with 19T upgrade? Do you remember what exactly did they port? It looks like TD04 is pretty nicely ported str8 from the factory
So you still have this turbo on your car?
DAMN... must be hell of a setup

On what dyno was it? When do you see the full boost on the street?

It was a dynapak I think. Hub dyno, pathetic loading capabilities. 20 psi by 3200 I guess maybe sooner. The car starts yanking hard at 2700. I tune in third so I don't knw the exact boost threshold in a high gear or where it would be on a good dyno. I don't floor it from low rpm in 4th or 5th simply because it's useless to do so. Other than for the sake of discussion I guess. For the tuners out there, I pull about 250 g/s on the stock intake. Accelerate with 2.6+ G^2/s in 70ish degree weather

a vf34 hits full boost around 3600 in third with the same type of pull, in the same gear for comparison

Have 2 years and maybe 35k on it. Have never considered changing it. It's a daily and I don't drive crazy like I used to. If it weren't i might put an 18g on a 2.0, but wouldn't bother with anything in between.

I know there is a vendor review forum but for the trifecta, and due to specific relevance to this thread, Mike at blouch is awesome. No sales pitch, no empty promises, and excellent service. He called me up when he received my turbo, said it was in good shape, and knocked 50 bucks off the original quote. I sent it Monday and received it Thursday. He provided new gaskets and a sheet of tips to remember when reinstalling it. Blouch turbo is the only visible decal on the outside of my car. And you know us saabaru guys aren't big on decals. I won't be doing turbo business with anyone else, anytime soon. He's a car guy; I've grown up in shops due to my street rodder dad and lived at drag strips as a kid and young adult, and this guy's the real deal. No knocks on anyone else, but he's into all things turbo, not just the suby or dsm or gnx communities. I'm glad they are so close to me.

Thank you very much Isis. After some thought and reading everything that you've written here and on the saabaru forum I think this turbo is for me.

Now to buy all the right parts. Oooh I can't wait

ok i'm convinced. this is the turbo for me. my bugeye is a daily driver and i just wanna feel pushed back in the seat more from time to time. i don't drive harsh like i used to and am still using the stock 5 speed. this should be perfect!

Hey isis, did you have him upgrade just the compressor wheel, clip it, and port and polish it? just wondering if upgrading the hot side wheel is really worth the 200 bucks . . . .

Did nothing to the hotside but Clip and port it.. I had a friend port it further by hand and coat it for me. The blouch port would be ok, but didn't look to be hand done so I said what the heck. Not sure it needed more but he had it apart for coating and all the equipment laying there

I'd say it would take a VFXX minimum and a high-reading dyno for this. Torque is a different story.
