Sorry to resurect...
So, you just apply matting directly to the underside of the rear deck? Or are you applying ensolite to it? Thanks Dave, you'll just have to show me LOL |

Just finished front & rear floor, rear seat, sides of trunk, and pillars on my 05 STi. Took all weekend! Gonna do the doors and deck lid next. Already very noticable difference. Hardly hear my coilovers and the exhaust is much quieter. I can tell the only road noise is coming from the doors.
The loudest car I've ever had just got to a normal, if not above normal level of quietness. Used Raamaudio's hardware. Very pleased. Thanks Rick! |

The STI is a dang fine car but sure are noisy, I have personally deadened 4 of them and I hardly ever work on anybodies car besides my own! I do know what they need and when done so much nicer to just drive let alone listen to music.
If you do a very good job under the rear deck it will further reduce the noise level a significant degree. The high level of noise from the rear is a major reason I developed the underseat subs for these cars, then you can really seal it off(there needs to be a passage for air for cabin vents to work properly, my STI guide covers that well) and have low noise, great audio, etc......and not much weight and all added between the axles, most of if down low, etc...does not effect handling much at all that way Have a great day Rick |

Want to add:
I deadened my old 07 wrx and my current 08 STI using rick's raamat and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to improve factory/aftermarket sound or to reduce cabin noise! The self adhesing ensolite is freaking awesome! No more spray glue! |

What do you guys suggest for cutting down exh drone in a Forester?
I have no deck to seal up. My front doors are dynamat'd My rear doors are getting sound proofed this weekend/next week. Where would be the most effective place to put sound deadening next? I was thinking maybe the back hatch door, since its a big flat surface facing directly out back, which is where the exh noise goes. Of course most of the time sound deadening wont do much for my stereo beyond the doors, as I like to drive around with the MASSIVE sunroof and all 4 windows open. |

Read the guide and do the rear sides and hatch if you want to greatly reduce road noise, far more important than the doors on nearly all hatches and wagons
Do not skip steps, they are all there for a very good reason and from 40+ years of real experience If you did not do the doors per the guide you are missing out on important gains as well. Have a great day Rick |

Here is my attempt so far doing the front doors and trunk. Still need to do rear doors and rear deck. Figured I'd post in here instead of starting a new thread. Plus I haven't found any pics done to an 03
Car: 2003 WRX material used: Raamat BXT, ensolite foam also installed alpine S-type (coax) in the front w/ kartboy spaces Ok first, it seems like I have a lot more **** in my doors than everyone else, or people are not worried about covering it up. Both front doors basically look like this: Tried covering the entire door but couldn't get the panel back on: Then we applied the ensolite foam to the door panel (about 2-3 layers) instead of the door. Again we were worried about covering moving parts, wires etc. Not sure if this will be as effective??? I had more success doing the trunk Still kind of a work in progress... comments or suggestions? |

I redone my carpet in the RS since it was shot and I got some aftermarket carpet that had a rubber sound deadening on the bottom...I also got some sound insulation from JC whittney(25ft roll I think) and stuck it in the trunk under that carpet, inside the trunk lid cavity, and also behind the rear side cards...its a huge improvement...it was like riding in a mercedes...it even knocked down the loudness of my blitz nur spec...I havent got my transmission installed yet with PPG's..but I couldnt fit any under the console so they wil be very audible

I don't think you went crazy -- just have more patience than most of us. You certainly did a cleaner job than I did on most of that. Only thing in the trunk is did you cover the wiring looms that run through there? I put the matting underneath way back when I did the trunk.
(Rest of the car was Raamat/Ensolite, but didn't record that epic.) |

I deadened my front doors and trunk with what I think is a very quality product. Makes my JL C6 component speakers and 12w7 sound amazing.
Edit: I will post some pics soon. Last edited by khaki_man; 06-12-2010 at 02:30 PM. |

Do you have the kicker sub that is a Subaru option? That's what I have and it sounded like trash (IMO) at anything more than -5 bass, -6 on some songs. Even at those levels some songs sounded really muddy. Just from doing the trunk lid I can safely turn the bass to -4 (which is enough punch for me) and I haven't found a song that sounds muddy. Songs with really crisp thumping bass sound even better. My next step when I feel like getting back to it is the area right behind the sub. Since the sub is side mounted on the driver's side of the trunk, I figure that has to be a big help. General questions for anyone...since I went with the factory option sub, it's clear I'm no audiophile. However, I was thinking of replacing the head unit with a Pioneer AppRadio. Apparently you can mirror any android phone's screen on it with little difficulty. 1) Would I see a sound quality difference without replacing speakers? 2) Would it be easy to get the sub working, or is the factory sub non-standard in some way? I've done head unit/speaker installs before but never in a system with a sub. I'd obviously want the sub to work, but the AppRadio also has a user setting for crossover freq. That's something I think might help a lot so I'd like to make sure that worked. Any advice? |
