Default Question for Network people - Netmask for multiple adapters

I have a server with 2 adapters.
One adapter needs to access 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.3.255
The other one needs to access 192.168.20.*

Which netmask value should I use for each adapter?

I had 255.255.0.0 on adapter A. Adapter B couldnt see the network it needed to see.
So I know I need to play with values so that both adapters see their networks without blocking each other.

ib something ot something work blah

What are the netmasks of the other computers on the network that it needs to access?

Do you need both adapters to see every block? If so, then cwb's answer works. If not, then the second adapter needs 255.255.255.0, and the 1st needs 255.255.252.0

I sort of assumed that, and gave a one size fits all answer. It would likely work, but not be within policies in place or something.

Are all the other computers using the same subnets?

255.255.252.0 for the first and 24bit for the second

The only other issue is that the adapters would have trouble talking to 192.168.21.x to 192.168.254.x, if it's on a different router. The mask helps decides what's on your local subnet, and what gets sent to the gateway router.

on adapter A, 192.168.0.252, 255.255.0.0 is the current. It needs to see up to .3.*
Computers on that side have 255.255.0.0 for netmask

On adapter B, 192.168.20.17, the set mask is 255.255.255.0. It just needs to see .20.*

255.255.0.0 works on adapter B but then I cant see anything though adapter A.

So looking around, a good mask for adapter A would be 255.255.252.0 and for B 255.255.224.0. But I can only see either outside of A or B.

B will not work correctly with 255.255.224.0. If you only need to see 192.168.20.x (254 addresses) than 255.255.255.0 is the proper mask. Also, the computers on the 'A' side of the router will need to have their masks changed.

and the winning numbers for the lottery are:
255.255.254.0 for A
255.255.255.0 for B

Congrats to the winner

I had just got told that B needed to see .20.* and .127.*
255.255.255.0 worked on it, i guess

Try to ping a host on 192.168.2.x or 3.x from adapter 'a'. Your mask is cutting out half your subnet.

That's wrong.
A should be 255.255.252.0. 255.255.254.0 would give you 192.168.0.1-192.168.1.254 while 255.255.252.0 would give you 192.168.0.1-192.168.3.254.

This is impossible to do when A needs to see 192.168.0.1-192.168.3.255 since you'd need a subnet of 255.255.0.0 (or 255.255.128.0 would work too, but would still include your .0.1-.3.255 network) to see .20.* and .127.* on the other one. In that case, you should probably just create a virtual interface on that card and make its IP 192.168.127.(whatever) and make its subnet mask 255.255.255.0 as well. And then leave adapter A's subnet mask 255.255.252.0.

and you may be right.

Based on the current settings suggested here, I cant see .3.*
Its going though the adapter B, when it should go through A.

Works for 2 servers but the 3rd one needs this .3.* network

No, I know I'm right. Follow my directions exactly and it will work. It is the only way it will work.

192.168.0.0 - 192.168.3.255 needs a subnet mask of 255.255.252.0 and the adpater needs an address from this range. This would allow the server to see all devices in the range.

192.168.20.0 should have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and an address from this range. this would allow the server to see all addresses in this range.

You didn't really go into if either network is connected to any thing else but to get beyond the 2 networks you defined in your question at least on of the adpters would also need to be configured with a subnet mask.

So did you get a A+ on your homework? If this is for your work you really need a better understanding of how subnet masking works.

Where's the problem lie now that he knows what subnet masks to use? Does he have gateway IPs in there? Is each NIC in the proper VLAN/subnet itself physically?

C'mon people enquiring minds want to know.

I'm assuming he followed my advice and it worked since he never came back to the thread after that.
