just to clear a point up, subaru only ran the closed block on a couple of early year RA's so that they could use this block for the wrc car (homologation) hence things like piston squirters and other lovelyness, after 96 (i think) the fia changed the homologation meaning that subaru no longer neaded to put the block on the road car to use it in wrc and as it cost more they stopped!
if your planning to go above 350 at the wheels id strongly suggest the closed block for a number of reasons, but most revolve around thermal expantion, boost presure and piston blow back and are a tad in depth

In the U.S., they ran it in the legacy turbo, I believe from '90-'94. Was this not the case in England?

'91-'94.

Here in the states, they were in the Sport Sedan and the Touring Wagon.

2.2L fully closed deck SOHC non=intercooled (grr....).

Rated @ 160hp and 181 lb-ft tq in that variation.

In england, they either came with the EJ22T or an early EJ20T.
