Well, they still include one feature that was on their older gaskets that ruins heads and causes leaks. Look at the extreme corners of the gasket in the PDF. See the little copper rivets? Those end up embossing their shape deeply into the head and the block meaning that the gasket no longer seals at the factory-recommended torque. Then, because they leave a dent, it's difficult to make other gaskets seal after you try to fix the ufcked up job left by the idiot that used felpro.

2006 2.5i @ 52k miles for driver side and 62k miles on the passenger side. Lucky both were covered from SOA Certified pre-owned warranty. For some reason looks like the 06-07 are pretty terrible.

The next time I do a set, I might get some and just trim the rivets off. The layers will be held in correct relation to each other by the cylinder rings.

Why not get the STi gaskets instead of trimming the Felpro ones?

They don't solve the problem and are not the correct thickness.

Ok...so the question is if it's an external leak does it really matter?

Yes. An external leak indicates a failed gasket. A failed gasket will, at some point in the near future, allow internal leaks.

I bought a 1999 2.5 rs a week ago, and the previous owner stopped driving it 3 years ago, saying that it had a blown head-gasket. I got the car at an absolute steal, and my mechanic then found out that the gasket was actually fine, and there was no crack in the cylinder head either. She has 108k miles and hasn't had a broken head gasket! Hooray!! got her for $1650. I am the luckiest person on planet earth you could say

Honestly? I have noticed that the 2.5s that are driven daily and have high milage (indicating highway driving) seem to have less headgasket issues than ones that are driven short distances and have low mileage.

I still can't believe my parent's legacy isn't even seeping yet. Once the odometer hit 80k I was like okay... Next oil change next oil change.. And it's been that way for the past 22k miles.

Knock on wood though ;-)

I need to do a HG on a 99 forester. Thinking of just getting all the felpro stuff from autozone. Any objections?

Also, this might be useful:

It's a comparison of the torque spec and sequence for the oem composite gasket to the felpro mls gasket

this might address the problem mentioned earlier about the felpro having the copper rivets on the corners. Those bolts are tightened less than the middle which should eliminate the problem of the rivet gouging the metal. I can see that happening if you use oem torquing instructions.

I'm now at 98000 miles on my 2007 Impreza and mine are leaking, also I have bubbles in the coolant reservoir. I will be taking mine to six star service in Atlanta for repair along with the timing belt and clutch.

For the record I did all the coolant changes myself, 30k miles interval, and 5k oil changes with synthetic. I also changed the PCV in case it might be a contributing factor but nope. They leak regardless of meticulous maintenance.

Out of curiousity, did you use the Subaru coolant and coolant conditioner at each coolant change?
I have 90k on my 2006 and so far so good.

I installed the feltpro gaskets and they looked really high quality. Their gasket set was sweet too. It came with everything needed+some extras and even some gasket maker

If I buy a gasket set, and it comes with liquid gasket maker, that's not exactly a confidence booster...

Not at all. Please make me feel like buying is better than leasing, Subaru.

Not to mention that there's a LOOOOONG history of using any sort of liquid gasket maker just resulting in rapid headgasket re-failure.

EDIT: I made a typo in that and wrote "hadgasket". I'm honestly not sure that's not more accurate...
