Default Phase 1 4eats - Some TC shafts have a nipple and some don't

I'm trying to figure out a compatibility issue. Let me try to explain.

On the 4eat the TC has two rotating parts that spin inside the trans. There is an outer sleeve and an inner most "driveshaft." On some this driveshaft has an extra nipple at the very end that goes into the TC and on others there is no nipple. The shafts are identical in every other way.

A torque converter meant for a non nipple shaft will not fit properly on a nippled shaft! I'd worry that using a non nipple shaft with a TC that requires one may cause unforseen problems if that nipple supports a bearing or something.

I personally converted one and it worked. I had a 98 outback transmission with no TC but with a nippled shaft. I used a 91 legacy TC + sleeve + non nipple driveshaft and it worked fine.

Any ideas what the purpose is? What cars had which style?
