+1 for wanting to hear about this. I plan on getting a GS J pipe (with cat) and their cat-back looks really solid. Need to figure out if I want that or Q300.

Thanks for the valuable feedback!

The Remark midpipe kit is 3" split to 2.5" after the Y. It adds a good size resonator. I'd be getting a good deal on a 3"turbo back setup as long as it doesnt sound like garbage due to the OEM mufflers. Are you thinking the OEM mufflers could ruin the sound or flow?

GS catted J - $700
Remark res midpipe kit - $525
Stock mufflers - $0
Vs.
Cobb catted res J - $775
Q300 catback - $900

Thanks again!

There was a thread recently that showed a "stock muffler mod" where you punch a hole through a boss on the outside of the muffler, blow through a "cap" on the inside of the muffler where the flow dead-heads against (causing drone/resonance), and then weld the outer cap back on. View the thread here.

Essentially, the idea is to remove a stop that the exhaust runs into and reverberates off of, while maintaining the rest of the guts of the stock mufflers. There have been a few people who did this and noted an improvement in the "breathing" of the exhaust and decreased interior noise.

Ok, that definitely helps. I get what you're saying about it dead-heading now. I'm guessing Q300 or similar aftermarket mufflers are minus this restriction.

This gives me what I need.
Thanks!

Glad to help.

The Q300 is a full 3" exhaust with a split to 2.36" (50mm) I believe, and the mufflers are large like OE. The midpipe has a long, large resonator, so it really knocks almost all of the drone right out. When I installed my Q300, I was absolutely floored that it was actually quieter inside the car, but noticeable when driven aggressively. I would recommend it to just about anybody.

What are you comparing it to when you said the Q300 was quieter?

I have STI SPT catback with GS Catted J pipe on my 18 WRX. It’s good, no droning, quiet, aggressive under throttle. I wish it was a touch louder but I still want something that won’t annoy my dog/wife/parents/boss in the car. I think the q300 is one step louder but I’m not sure how they rank

I was comparing the Q300 to stock. The interior noise is quieter with the Q300, but the outside is just a tiny bit louder. I live within earshot of a lot of people, so a "quiet" exhaust was a must-have for my situation. I'm still using the factory J-pipe, which helps.

my 2 cents:
I have a resonated downpipe, and an axle back "muffler delete"
and I find it is very quiet until I step on it, and I can hardly hear it going down the highway.

I ended up getting the Q300. If my wife finds out what I spent, we'll be jewelry shopping.

I finally got the last *$!# #*! stud nut out last night so I can bolt up the catted Grimmspeed J and Q300.
All the sound clips I've heard with this combo sound deep and not loud unless you get on it. No rasp, minimal drone.
I'll try to post a vid after the rest of my parts and tune.
There will be some 10 hour trips to Snowshoe this season, so I'll follow up on highway drone.

I have the Magnaflow competition catback. It is basically a resonator in the mide pipe without mufflers. Great tone and very mellow when cruising.

Also the tips fill out the exhaust cutout perfectlry

Did you have any sound clips?

I currently have the cobb Catted Jpipe with nameless mufflers and its a bit loud for my taste...

Hoping that the HKS will be a bit quieter with no drone but Id like to hear it.

Like all modern turbo 4 cylinders the FA20 is pretty ugly to the ears... IME quieter is better and after trying stock + 2 after- market exhausts I concluded that you are better off with a large resonator, larger mufflers and tapered ( approx 2.5") dual outlets to the mufflers if you have a TBE.

I also liked the extra response lower down with smaller piping.

I'm in my 40s and found the louder exhaust too attention seeking and not quality enough to broadcast far and wide.

I wanted something louder than stock. Initially found an SPT locally for stupid cheap so tried that and didn't get the lift in volume I wanted. Then did some more digging to figure out an exhaust that was louder than stock with zero drone (for when the baby and wife are in the car). Thought about the Q300 for a bit and was seriously considering it, but wanted to give the ARK a try after coming across it in a few threads as something that's fairly tame until you get on it. Also, the fact that it was heavily on sale made ($1,050 down from $1,999) it feel like a "good value" vs the Invidia. I might be kicking myself when Black Friday/Cyber Week comes around and the Q300 is steeply discounted but pretty happy with the ARK thus far. Only thing that I don't love about it is how far the tips stick out - feels like they could be a bit closer to the bumper line.

here's a video from HKS on youtube but this sounds slightly more aggressive than mine (my guess is they've got an intake or j-pipe causing the increased tone) SUBARU WRX S4 DBA-VAG FA20 HKS Hi-Power Muffler Spec-L - YouTube

I had a serious drone with an ETS J-pipe with Nameless deletes and factory mid. The Nameless deletes alone were pretty good but since installing the HKS Hi Power I have people chasing me down to ask what brand exhaust I have. Last week it was an Audi driver. I couldn't be happier. I just wish the HKS Hi Power titanium was in my budget.

For a quiet, low drone aftermarket setup:
  • HKS Legamax
  • HKS Super Turbo Ti (titanium version of Legamax)
  • Milltek - They're a UK based company and their exhaust is designed to meet Europe's strict noise restrictions. These seem to be more popular with the STI crowd.
Add a Cobb catted & resonated J pipe for the quietest stage 2 possible.

Here's an example of Milltek's turboback exhaust system on an STI.. talk about quiet. Most reviews say that it's almost as quiet as the stock exhaust, but without the boominess. I've seen 0 complaints of drone.

I'm really looking for something that sounds stock'ish until you really open up the throttle? No drone, just a bit more snarl. Maybe something that doesn't open up until 4-5K rpm?

Let me know if anyone has any advice on exhausts I should be looking into.

Thanks,
Mike
My vote is for the Stromung Dual Tip Cat Back exhaust. I have it on my 03 WRX and not only does it look similar to stock (nicer of course) but it is very quiet and subdued but definitely gives a good snarl when you open her up or are at WOT. Great German build quality too. I can’t speak for any of the other exhausts but the Stromung definitely has my vote. Zero Drone at any speed.

The factory upgrade SPT exhaust sounds amazing and I never hear any drone. A real pain in the ass to keep clean though.

Just to add my 2cents here:

I first got a nameless catted DP and about a year later purchased the remark muffler deletes. Since adding an aftermarket DP removes the resonator altogether I also experienced lots of drone around 3k RPM and nearly sold the axleback. The tone was also not very pleasant at very low rpms as well. I purchased the remark resonated mid-pipe and everything changed.

It is still much louder than stock mufflers but the sound quality is balanced; nice and growly down low but not raspy up top.

IMO the drone is pretty much the same as stock mufflers at 3krpm and that's with an aftermarket DP. I can only imagine how much more quiet it would be with the stock DP.

I went with the ARK performance DT-S. It has no drone and sounds good. Louder than stock but not obnoxious.

I personally run with the Borla S-Type cat back, it has mufflers so is quiet with a nice tone and opens up when you get on it. I haven't seen many people use this setup, i highly recommend it.

I have this option that is made in Canada from Lachute Performance. They are using Magnaflow muffler and a big resonator. Tailpipes are a little bigger than stock, not too loud and don't raise attention if you are not pushing... Really like this setup!

R400 > Q300 > Ark P Race > Ark P Street
Adding Cobb Catted Res J Pipe will open up completely the exhaust for more deep tone and throaty sound.

Or send it with Tomei.

Still debating muffler deletes myself. I came from a 5.7 LT1 with cutouts that would set of alarms for days, and the axle back dumped at the rear axles. On my 02 WRX I had the SPT as it was louder than stock, but very tame. Almost too tame for me so I went to an electric cutout, and would rock that a lot of the time.

Seems most of the videos online don't seem to show deletes as being that loud.
