Smile Polyglots: Stand up and be counted.

Hello.

I'm just wondering how many languages y'all speak. For the purposes of the poll, we'll assume that being able to carry a conversation --even if somewhat broken-- is sufficient to be counted.

If you vote, please reply and break down what you speak, and what level. It might be interesting to also note your ethnic background, but that's optional.

Levels will include:
- Fluent, denoting mastery of the language (i.e., you're able to make plays on words, carry intellectual conversations, have an expanded lexicon);
- Conversational, denoting an ability to carry on a conversation, but not at the level of fluency. Perhaps a little bit of stumbling for words, or having to take linguistic detours to say something because you're not sure how to better express yourself; and
- Working, denoting an ability to get by in a language, but just barely. Requires lots of jumping over linguistic hurdles, as well as occasions where you find yourself doing the "smile-and-nod" thing when someone speaks to you.

Also, do you have an accent when you speak anything other than English?

I'm Fluent English and French, sans accent, and my Greek is somewhere between Conversational and Working. I'm one of those people that has a very good ear for mimicry, so generally I only have a slight accent, if any, when learning foreign phrases.

My girlfriend is conversational/fluent in Czech, since she spent all of her summers as a child there. I call her ESL and make fun of her.

I know a few phrases in, like, dozens of languages, yet it doesn't count anywhere near "Working" by your standards.

So, umm, I'm gonna have to say 3. Fluent English, working Russian, working Spanish.

How many languages can you count to 10 in?

Default counting to 10

counting to 10

English, Spanish, Russian, Welsh, Georgian, French, German.......but i can't actually talk in any of them besides the first 3.

How many alphabets can you read? I can handle Latin, Cyrillic, and Georgian (I got bored and learned it for the hell of it once). Arabic is next on my list but I haven't gotten around to it.

Dunno about that. "Prost" is probably a legit thing to say in Czech or in Bavarian German, but not Russian. Besides, "prost" is far too short and boring for a Russian toast.

Na zdarovye! (to your health)
Da dna! (bottoms up)
Za nas! (to us)
Udivimsya pod stolom! (we will meet again under the table)

I stand corrected.

I wonder what category the Greek alphabet falls under? I'd imagine Cyrillic.

No it's not. In fact I don't think Prost is even a russian word. "prosto" = simple

Anyway I'm fluent in English and Russian. Had 2 years of French in high school, but cut most of the classes, all I can say is Je ne parlez pas au Francais!

Fluent= English, Spanish, Tagalog Conversational-Frogistani, or at least I used to be.

Polyglot is one of those words that would get you into a fight as a kid: "Oh yeah, well your mother is a polyglot!"
