Default How do they change the lights on Radio towers?

You know the lights way up on those radio towers? How do they change them if one burns out? Does someone get to climb all the way up there to change them? Or do they have some other way of changing them??

They climb. Same thing with the antennae on top of skyscrapers and such... there's a great photo from a few years back helping change a bulb at the top of the spire on the Empire State Building... I'll have to find it.

Climb up.

Sometimes helicopters are used, but more often it's too dangerous.

I know they do those... But some of the towers just seem like they couldn't support the weight of a person on them...

How do you get the job to be a climber?? I think that would be wicked fun!

lots of towers actually don't have ladders built in, with the exception of the very tip
most of the time the climber actually has to climb up the structure of the antenna.

i had a friend in middle school who's father actually did this for a living
he made pretty good money.

Depends on the tower. The monster towers (800-2000 feet) often have elevators. These elevators are just cages with enough room for one or two workers to stand while their tools are hung beneath. The base of these towers are made from 12" thick solid steel rods, and even though they look small from a distance, are often time 12 feet or more across at the base. The wires used to hold them up (guy wires) weight several tons. The weight of a man is NOTHING.

Tower maintenance specialist. People train a long time to be the guys to do this. They also have to be able to properly install the comms equipment along the tower as well.

the other thing that people don't usually realize is just how large those light bulbs are

the most common ones are the size of a basketball
but they get bigger

This sounds like a sweet job. Where would one look into this?

Well did a quick google search.

http://www.siouxfallstower.com/ they have pictures in there as well. Starting pay is 40k, not bad pay for just a highschool education. Would of been cool to do for two years right when I got out of highschool. Oh well.
