Im currently on my third tank so it still early, but Im pretty satisfied with my mileage so far. I have a 5 door cvt limited, now with about 800 miles on it, used primarily commuting about 20 miles into Boston so thats a mix of highway, backed up stop and go traffic traffic and city driving. Averaging 33 mpg on dash, and about 32 calculated. Notice a huge drop at initial start and warm up and poor mileage for short trips.
The only thing Im not liking is the aggressive downshifting when coasting going downhill. Car was built in February.

Agreed. Not worth it for a short wait. Similarly, downshifting on a manual. Do you want to wear out the clutch parts to save a little wear on the brake pads, which are relatively cheap and easy to replace?

If the Impreza burns .5 gal an hour at Idle (just a guess) and you can reduce idling by 10 minutes a day, 365 days a year by shutting down, you save abt. 30.5 gallons per year or $122 @ $4 per gallon. Individually it doesn't seem much, but it's a huge impact when applied across millions of drivers. One starter replacement, if you pay out of pocket, could negate a couple years of effort. |

i don't think the wear on the clutch or transmission is significant from downshifting, at least in my experience. in over two decades of having driven my prior cars with well over 100k on each car (lots of in town suburbia driving for both, so there is significant downshifting in these cars averaging maybe 9k/year), each car had their original clutch and transmission going strong after all of those miles of regularly downshifting. while i might boast to have had the original brakes on my last honda at 109k and 12.5 years before my recent accident, with about 50% of the pad linings remaining in front (more in rear), the main purpose of downshifting and staying in gear is safety, IMHO. it's good to be in gear in case the light turns green or something happens around you which requires you to act and be in gear. i know most people don't drive this way, but i was taught that way and it became second habit with no ill effect on the transmission. now, driving the CVT in the Impreza, i'm using my brakes more and it still take some getting used to since it's not in my reflexes to use the paddle shifters to shift down, and there is less of a safety need since the car is "ready to go" should i just hit the gas. finally since this is a mileage thread, coming back around: i have no clue whether the downshifting helped my mileage, but my EPA rated 27/32 (using 2008 standards) old honda civic netted me about 30-31mpg overall and about 28 mpg worst case (all city driving). i'm getting in contrast about 28-29 mpg overall and about 25 mpg worst case on the Impreza which is supposedly a 27/36 rated car. 160 mile road trip which will be 90% highway coming up next week...we'll see how those highway numbers compare. |

Caveat that the occasions to do this, for me anyway, would maybe arise 3-5 extra times a day on a typical commute to/from work. I don't think starting the car 8-10 times vs 3 or 5 times in a day is going to have a severe effect. |

pxpaul: Its nice you can squeeze every last drop of dyno juice out of your vehicles but the practicality and potential longevity issues concern me. You having had 1 vehicle every year on the other side ive had 3 vehicles in 10 years. 2 of the 3 have exceeded 225k so i can say that actions over the course of years can lead to issues down the road. If you plan on keeping a car past 150k keep in mind things that can take a toll. Last edited by auskip07; 05-10-2012 at 12:42 PM. |

You're the first one that I've seen mention they got a free maintenance plan. I would of jumped on that deal if it was offered to me even though I like doing my own maintenance. Did you have to haggle for that or did they just offer it to you?

Damn, wish my dealer would of did that for me! They asked if I wanted to purchase a plan, but they didn't push it when I said no. I did, however, purchase a 5yr/100000 mi extended bumper-to-bumper warranty.

2 year plan for me free of charge. They offered one longer $$$$ but i am so used to working on my own vehicles i dont mind doing oil changes and various other things. As long as they honor 3 years or 36k and the 5 year 60k mile warrenty im fine with doing the small stuff and the big stuff for that matter. |

but to get it for free seems incredible. i don't see how they lose any more money in not having you go there for service vs giving it to you for free. surely, they lose more money by having to service your vehicle for no cost for parts/labor? maybe there is some marketing model which suggests they will recoup other costs from you in some other way with you getting other maintenance or things done by them. |

Its the building of trust. If they do your oil changes and various small work for 2 years they win over a few people for serious work down the road. I bet this is what they are banking on.

of course, in reality, for me at least, that wouldn't make too much a difference. i'd likely not change my post free period behavior: i'd shop around for 3rd party folks to do my major interval work. |

I got 3 years maintenance and 7 year warranty for about 900. I don't want to do my own maintenance and will probably keep the car for 8-10 years.
I'm going in Monday for the first service. |

that sounds like a very sound deal. even though i went into this "sales session" anticipating turning down any extended warranties or maintenance contracts, i think i would have gave it reasonable consideration in that sort of price range because that is a fair deal.

They do a "no haggle" thing. I was VERY cautious going into it, had all my invoice numbers etc. The first offer they made was about $200 above my target. The maintenance and warranty deal went the same way. Sounds like a commercial I know but I'm that pleased. Speaking of commercials, Google 'johnson badger' for some funny ones. |
