Default Mixing and matching brake pad sets okay?

The time has come for me to replace the front brake pads and rotors on my 53k mile '12 WRX. Can anyone advise me whether it is okay or not okay to have a different set of brake pads/rotors in the front vs the rear?

I actually replaced the rear brake pads/rotors a few months ago, but went with whatever my mechanic had on hand, which were Bosch Quietcast brake pads and I believe Centric rotors. The rear brakes were in really bad shape and this was an urgent fix.

For the fronts, I'm wondering if I can look for pads/rotors that have good performance over whatever my mechanic sources. I don't plan on racing/tracking the car - this is merely a daily/sunday driver that does not see many miles regularly. However I do want good stopping power -- OEM or better. (On my old Outback XT I "upgraded" to Akebono Proact ceramics, which I was not a fan of because the stopping distance increased considerably.)

Rotors don’t make a significant everyday difference, Friction material does.

Ideally you want the same pad composition front and rear.

Normal everyday driving you will likely not see a difference. However in a panic stop or evasive maneuver where VDC operates. Having mismatched pads can cause unpredictability in reaction and how the ABS operates.

A more aggressive pad on the front may seem like a good idea. But really you’re just making the front rotors take more heat and pads wear faster , as the initial bite and higher friction coefficient will be different.

You should be fine as long as they’re similar in friction type.
Obviously it is a good idea to do a little testing in a safe place when trying something new

I'm running StopTech Street in the rear and Sport in the front. After one rallycross all is fine. Have a track day in two weeks and will let you know. It's also my daily, and so far no issues.

I've ran mismatched pads on my RX7 for years with zero issues. I put yellow stuff on the front and green in the rears. I actually found it to be a great combo

As long as the are the same on the front, and the same on the rear, I don't think you'll have a problem. Why do you want to run different brakes though?
