I looked into SCCA, $80 a year seems like money well spent if it gets me into track events, additional fees expected. A quick look through there classing system puts me in with "prototype" the ones that look like indy cars. I'm hoping to find my way into the exocet, goblin type kit car class, if there is such a thing.

You don't need that to do the track night, just saying. It does seem like you could then get into a bunch more of the other track events if you did join.

Track Night in America (TNiA) is the easy button. No classing. You don’t need to be an SCCA member. I can put you in touch with the TNiA boss to see if/what considerations need to be made with your vehicle. I wouldn’t buy a membership until you figure out what you’re doing and how many times. You might decide a NASA membership suits you better. That brings me to the OTHER events you could do. NASA, Chin, 3 Balls Racing (yes, seriously) all have HPDE/“Track Day” events at PittRace which requires more money, time and car scrutiny. NASA is great, but you HAVE to do in-car and classroom instruction, also $$$ ($500/weekend).

EDIT:
The local SCCA Region doesn't have HPDE's or "Track Days" so getting a membership doesn't really get you access to track time at PittRace. This year they did have a Time Trial event and there is supposed to be another one in April 2019. You can certainly do these events with little or no experience but again, expect more time, money, serious tech inspection but no instruction. You'd be jumping right into the competition end of the pool.

EDIT 2:
Messaged the TNiA boss and he just replied, he said they're "good with that for TNiA, especially since it's registered."
