Default Ford of Austria Prices the 300HP Focus RS at €39,000 and Releases New Performance Fig

Quote:
Despite the fact that we're still a few months away from the market launch of the all-new Ford Focus RS (click here for more info and 22 high-res photos) that made its world premiere at the London Motor Show this past July, Ford's Austrian arm has released plenty of new and important details for the sport hatchback including preliminary pricing and revised performance figures.

When Ford introduced the vehicle in London, the company said that the Focus RS with its 300HP 2.5-liter turbocharged inline 5-cylinder engine would sprint from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in under 6.0 sec and on to a top speed of 260 km/h (162mph) or more. According to the firm's latest tests, the Focus RS accelerates from standstill to 100km/h in 5.9 sec and achieves a maximum speed of 263 km/h or 164mph.

The fastest ever European Ford production car will be available in Austria from summer 2009 priced from €39,000 or $50,800 with the current exchange rates. Comparatively, the 225HP Focus ST which forms the base for the RS, starts from €29,980 in Austria.

The new Focus RS will be offered with three different exterior colors: "Performance Green", "Indianapolis Blue" and "Frost White" each with the choice of blue or green color matched interior. Alternatively, a full black leather option will be available for all three exterior colors.

Actually, if you change the Euro sign to a dollar sign, you would be close to what they would sell for in the US.

So you'd get that here for $39,000, which I think is way too high, it should be around $25-$27K (ro 25-27 euros in Europe).

Well this is an extremely limited edition car. For probably 2/3 the price you could get the ST version which can put out about 250 HP without bad torquesteer.

I would love to drive this car if it were in the states. Maybe some day that will happen.

In comparison to the 09 WRX, which is apparently the new F4STER!, it has a 6 speed, nicer brakes, recaros, an inline 5 burble, 300 HP, as well as a new trick LSD diff up front. I have no doubt that this would stomp a WRX.

Cobalt SS is the new F4STAR! But... yeah.

Out of curiosity, has Dodge even sold a single Calibur SRT-4 yet? I've definitely never seen one.

Considering the WRX is around a full second faster to 60MPH... how to you figure the Focus would "stomp" it?

Well of course there is the fact that you could repeat the focus' launch more than a few times before something broke or your clutch gave out. Manufacturer's claims are always quite a bit slower than magazines will actually get, just look at the GTI.

Then there are these things called corners. I have no doubt that the WRX would fall behind quite quickly when the two cars encountered one of these.

I know they don't have corners in some parts of the US, what with the concentration on 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, but the focus would annihilate a WRX on the track. Just look at how easily the Cobalt SS shames the WRX. So laugh all you want, but you really don't think that a specially developed ford, which has more racing heritage than most other companies, can't take on a commuter copy of a world rally car?

I love the WRX but even the 09 is severely compromised compared to this focus.

When they release them in UK I will take a look at them, but there is no way it will be £30k+. I thought I read the price would be around £25-27k. The prices listed in the article are for Austria, and every country in Europe has vastly different prices due to various taxes.

A used ST would probably be my choice, pretty sweet looking car in person.

Yeah its sad when a FWD euro hot hatch can be better engineered to handle better on a track w less understeer than an AWD WRX.

If youve seen videos of the Focus ST in stock trim powersliding and throttle lift off oversteer easily on shows like Top Gear and Fifth Gear, and the RS version has even more aggressive suspension tuning with the trick front diff....

ppl who crow on about how AWD is the be all and end all need to shut up and get with the times.

Some new FWD systems are so well engineered that they handle on the track as well as some AWD and RWD cars.

A properly setup AWD or RWD car would dominate an equivalent FWD setup. They can put as many fancy gizmos as they like in a car but they still can't change the laws of physics. That's not to say they can't make great handling FWD cars because they obviously can, but there are limits.

Default Ford Begins Production of 300HP Focus RS

Quote:
The first production example of the all-new Ford Focus RS rolled off the production line today at the firm's Saarlouis plant in Germany. Powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine producing 300HP and 440 Nm of torque, the front-wheel drive Focus RS sprints from zero to 100km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 sec and achieves a top speed of 263 km/h (164 mph). The range-topping Focus is set to go on sale this March in more than 20 European countries including Russia, with the UK, Switzerland and Germany expected to be the highest volume markets. Click through to enjoy our high-resolution image gallery of the RS.

Perhaps, but how many properly setup AWD or RWD cars do we actually see? The WRX ain't one of them.

(and don't tell me that a good set of coilovers will fix that -- 99.9% of all the aftermarket suspension mods people do to their WRX or STI actually make it handle worse)

So kudos to Ford for the RS, I think it's a great car. And I agree that it would rape a WRX out on the track. Comparing 0-60 is pretty pointless since damn few people are willing to abuse their WRX drivetrain to get that kind of acceleration.
