Hello all; im new to the forum and just got my first subaru about a month ago. I use to love modding my cars but that was on hold for a bit. the usual life, work, work and etc.. i didnt have a car to mod for about 10 years or so, just doing maintenance type things to my SUVs. i have 2 kids now and i spend most of my time with them and going on trips to the mountains and beaches. now they are in school most of the day and i have time in the mornings to play around in the garage.

so i wanted a track car and originally looking for an mr2 hardtop. ive had 3 sw20 and 1 aw11 supercharge. A part of me wanted something new that i have never taken apart. ive always liked the Gm body and i hate sunroofs so i had to find a regular impreza. found one in decent shape and runs very well. a few weeks later bought a 2003 wagon to use as a parts car. my friend would get the shell and i take everything else.
i test drove the wagon and felt good had a nice sound to it. next day i got up and wanted to see what brand exhaust was on there and see if it would fit the GM chassis.
well the guy sold me a car without an exhaust at all. it was just the stock pipe hanging in front of the diff. as usually he says sold as is, and that i checked it out anyways. i told him the ad clearly stated that aftermarket exhaust was included as well as an amp(which was also missing)
lesson learned, but who would sell a car without an exhaust!

on with the picks.

V7 or V8 seats. not sure which it is. fits great after bending the mounting tabs back. it does sit a bit high. im about 5'8 and if i lean it back slightly its ok. but i dont like to drive like that. so ill get the rails out of the GD after the engine swap is done. also holds so much better then my friends 2016 sti(not 100% sure on the year)

20170831_200758 by meme meme, on Flickr

draining fluids today. will pull the motor out saturday. spend the week cleaning and paint the bay gun metal.

few pics of parts i got the last 2 weeks. few more things coming. got a new flywheel coming but was damaged in shipping because of the storm( as i was told). they are sending it back and have to order a new one.
-coming soon
fortune 500 gen6 coilover; month wait
new flywheel
Aem wideband
plasti dip anthracite kit for exterior
enamel gun metal paint kit for engine bay

these are parts i have now.

ebay 3in downpipe. looks really bad on the inside. but it was only about $80.
ebay oval exhaust for a GD; hope it fits ok
new group n motor mounts and pitch thing
new tans mount
trans bracket bushing
prothane shifter bushing kit
new shift linkage with bushing
stoptech brake lines
hawk hp plus pads
exedy ksb03 clutch kit
redline oil
5w40
75w90
75w90ns
light weight shockproof
bunch of oem filters.
rpf1 brone 17x8 +45
falken rt615k 215/45/17
racepak iq3s dash. originally was going to use haltech, then microsquirt, didnt want to spend money on wiring the oem ecu then get an access port later/open source. figure as that $1400 and get a nice programmable now. still not sure which route to take yet.

-still need to order
hood with scoop
rs bumper and all other stuff for it.
rs wing
new seat belts for both front
thats all i can think of now. ill add pics as things progress.

i will try to do the harness merge to try and save $815. once i get the harnesses out ill see if im in the mood for the merge. ive done a bunch of sr20det swaps a longgggg time ago but that was really easy and had exact pins to rewire. if i remember right that was only like 4 wires and then the automatic interlock wires. so that was really easy.

small update;
i pulled the motor out but couldnt get the axles out. so i dropped the subframe and auto trans with everything connected.

20170904_165153 by meme meme, on Flickr

as i was taking apart the auto shifter found out it does have a cup hole. ive been using the storage by the e-brake to hold my drinks.

20170905_113317 by meme meme, on Flickr

from the donor car; i pulled the sub frame out first to get it cleaned and painted. i left the axle connected to the spindle and shocks and will put that out as a whole.

i like to lift the back as high as i could get it when pulling a motor. with the rearend high and an engine leveler it doesnt hit anything and makes it easy to pull the motor out by yourself.

for anyone replacing the shift link, it is a double pin. so tap out the smaller one then the outer one.

That's a lot of work to do to get 2 doors behind the turbo motor, but projects are always fun so hopefully it turns out as you would like it to! I had a wildly modded 91 MR2 and every time I'm on craigslist I'm looking for another.. they never get old, but AWD is a force to be reckoned with.

You didn't waste any time jumping in with both feet after your 10-year hiatus! Should be a very fun car when it's all together.

He's hardly the first person to swap an early Impreza. Smaller & lighter, what more can you ask for if you're building a track car?

Nice start to what will be a really fun project!

I enjoy my swap everyday and curse it at the same time. Haha. BUT the smiles always outweigh the cursing.

Look forward to seeing the progress!

thanks everyone

i got the motor in last night. i was in a hurry and forgot to put the clutch master in. i got new group n motor mount and trans and pitch mount. also got new super pro trans bracket mounts

my car was originally and automatic so it didnt have the front trans bracket. when i went to mount the front trans bracket i couldnt find the hole. my trans tunnel was so caked up with dirt and oil i didnt see the plastic cover.

for anyone else that is new to subaru, this is what the covers look like
20170908_073323 by meme meme, on Flickr

next was the shifter. went to reinstall the shifter but couldnt get it in. found a snap ring at the bottom of the shift assembly under the car. once i removed that the white plastic thing that holds the shifter in place can be removed.

20170908_184545 by meme meme, on Flickr

question to others that have done the swap;
which coolant port on the fire wall goes to which port on the motor? using the impreza original impreza lines i have two options

impreza chassis passenger port to motor driver side port
20170908_203050 by meme meme, on Flickr

or

chassis driver side port to motor driver side port
20170908_203110 by meme meme, on Flickr

don't get prothane shifter bushings. the one that goes to the back of the shifter doesnt fit.
20170908_073410 by meme meme, on Flickr

got the pedal set out of the gd wagon. it was a real tight fit and stripped one of the top bolt holes. so i had to remove everything again to retap. took about about 2 hours just trying to get it installed right in the GM. i got allthe bolts except the right side bolt near the gas pedal.
20170908_090513 by meme meme, on Flickr

installed in the GM but the gas pedal looks really low. is this normal? im alsoo using the GD throttle cable.

im still debating if i should get a haltech elite 750 or iwire merge.
-haltech is about 1400+wideband and try to get it setup
-iwire is about 820+ accessport+wideband but should be running since its stock ecu.

small update;

i got the wrx gas tank in and then realized the tank has a quick disconnect hose. so out it came again.

after a bit of thinking i firgured i should be able to swap the pump assembly into the wrx tank then i could use the gc pump harness and hard lines.

then figured i try the hard lines from the wrx wagon, and they fit. so the complete wrx wagon tank went back in.

so hope that the merge harness will work with this setup.

ordered a few parts from import image racing. mishimoto intercooler and kartboy bushings. 2 mishimoto fans.

next is the wiring. either iwire or haltech. or if anyone is local and want to help me with the merge let me know.

for all you swapped gc guys; what did you do about speed sensor? i have an auto mechanical sensor hanging from my clutser but it doesnt reach the wrx trans sensor.

well; today took a drive down to drop off my harnessto get merged.
after asking a few questions, i decided to just use the full wrx gas tank and all sensors. so this weekend ill be reinstalling the tank for the third time and try and use all the wrx charcoal canister and hoses.

next problem i forgot about till now. Speed sensor! my car is an automatic and the cable is short. so i guess i need a manual trans cable but it is discontinued part from subaru.

i got the mishimoto intercooler kit today. but it is up for sale. want to change colors now.

Small update. Removes wrx gas tank again and confirmed with iwire. The reinstall it again. I got new fuel return line installed and everything hooked up for the gas tank except the evap stuff.

Today im installing the complete rear end and driveshaft.

I got my fortune auto 500 gen6 coilover kit in yesterday, thanks to import image racing. So that will be installed over the weekend.

it came with 2 bolts. one in each front shock. so i think it is suppose to replace the stock camber bolts.
i thought i heard they come ready to install. meaning preload is set to recommended setting for springs used. but they are all loose. springs they gave me are 9k all around.

I got a bunch of small stuff ordered from subaru
Brake ducks
Mechanical speed sensor (hope i got the right one)
Rs hood

Camo hose kit from ebay
Uppipe heat blanket
Down pipe heat wrap
Perrin brake master bracket
Ebay impreza radiator

The day before i pulled the carpet out and did some cleaning. The last owner must have spilled a few big gulps becaise it was nasty adter hosing it down. second wash still dirty.
20170926_101440 by meme meme, on Flickr

I got kart boy shifter bushing kit to replace my prothane kit. On prothane kit , the back piece was to had and wasnt able to stretch it to get it the holes lined up. The kartboy rear part i was able to pull it a bit and got the holes lined up. Thren the 2 round pieces for the linkage, the kart boy wasnt think enough and the big round washer thing didnt sit up agaisnt the bushing.got the prothane ones and tried those. It fit perdectly.
20170923_114015 by meme meme, on Flickr
20170923_114318 by meme meme, on Flickr
protane on the left, kartboy on the right

I have a mix match kit for sale now. Prothane rear piece and kart boy front 2 roind pieces.

Last week i replaced the shift linkage with a new oem part. Turns out i installed it wrong. So i had to remove trans bracket and everythibg in the way to get the pins out. So anyone doing this, make sure the side with the small hole is facing down. There should be a spring from that small hole to the link with the 2 round bushings.

installed the right way now.

today i got a lot done. prepped the rearend and subframe to mount. after mounting i couldnt get the fuel filler tube installed so i had to slightly drop the subframe to be able to tighten the filler tube to tank hose.
i couldnt get the holes of the GD filler tube to match up with the mounting at the gas door, so that is kind of loose.

got the fortune auto coilover kit installed. im not sure if it is suppose to do this but the rear suspension is at full positive camber. its really hard to adjust camber without having the wheel on and pushing the top of the wheel to get some negative camber. without the wheel mounted it is really hard to adjust camber.
20170930_204549 by meme meme, on Flickr

installed the perrin GD brake master brace. like they say measure twice and drill once. i forgot to add the difference to my first measurement and so it came up short. so i had to drill another hole. the brace prettey much is right up against the brake master even without the adjuster pushing on the master. had to bend the front brake line down and back a bit.

fan kit doesnt fit the impreza radiator. so ill have to mount the fans directly to the radiator.

i placed two orders with subarupartsdeal.com. and should be here next week.

next few days ill be bleeding the clutch, brakes and installing the hawk pads. brakes lines already installed. then also setting preload on the coilovers.

from there, wait for the oem parts to show up to get other stuff done.

i got motul 5.1 brake fluid yesterday so i bleed the brakes, but could not get the clutch bleed. wasted about 2/3 of the bottle! i removed the slave to get it higher then the master. did a couple of bleeds but still no good. the clutch pedal just drops to the floor and wont spring back. im looking into getting a steel braided line to replace the rubber line and damper thing.

got some more parts in

ebay headlight kit
up pipe thermal blanket
magnetic drain plug.
new alternator from rock auto; it was only $20 or so more for new then remanufactured.

ebay radiator hose white camo. looks better in the ad then it does in the picture. looking at it real quick it looks like a cow.

got my new manual speed sensor. if you have an auto trans and doing to 5spd swap, this is the only part you will need for speed sensor. mounts the same way as the auto. there is a small spring inside so dont loose that. once the cable is indexed the round part with the slit clips into the top part of the sensor.

one more subaru order coming next week. flywheel, gaskets, clutch flywheel bolts and a bunch of misc bolts. scoop mounting bolts

ive been spending to much money on this car! originally i thought $5k max including the car. im way past that now. waiting on a china catch baffled catch can, short shifter,

once i get my harness back from iwire then i could starting finishing up the heater hoses and get the mishimoto intercooler installed.

I have found the best way to bleed the clutch is to get a speed bleeder valve, the kind you can install on the brakes. Then you can just run a tube to a clear bottle and watch the bubbles come out as you pump the clutch. Otherwise it's a complete bitch to do.

Nice swap so far!

after trying to bleed the master and gave up i ordered the speed bleeders for the brakes and clutch master. i got the ones form russell.
after bleeding for a long time i got it to a point where i was happy with it and then install it. got the master in and trying to get the slave in i pushed in the piston and it was at an angle and fluid came out. this car is nickle and diming me to death!

so i junked both master and slave and ordered news ones from rockauto. then ordered -3an to m10x1.0 adaptors and 12" -3an brake hose to replace all the oem stuff. i was trying to save as much money as i could but in the end this is just easier. i normally do this for all my swaps back in the day with my nissans and toyota.

looks more like a cow print in person. it had a small kink on the engine side of the hose, but not to bad, so it should be ok.

GD exhaust does not fit a GC. once everything else is done ill cut the mounting tabs off and get it straight and reweld the tabs.

shifter that came with the car. i replaced it with a ebay shifter. seems to work great. came with a few extra things to make it work with other cars i guess. they give you 2 plastic washers that take up the space and make it a really solid shifter. over all i really like it and it was only $22. i think.

i got a single pillar gauge pod for my innovate wideband PSB-1 power safe. brand is glow shift; something like that. says its for an impreza; but the bottom part that should beclosed off when mounted is not. so all the wires can be seen when looking through the windshield. autometer has one for the impreza so ill give that a try later.

m10x1.0 straight to -3an
1ft steelbraided lineteflon cover -3an
russell speed bleeder m7x1.0

i did a bench bleed holding the slave higher then the master and got all the bubbles out. i still need to cut the damper off the bracket to be able to mount the slave. the bolt bottoms out with a few MM left.

waiting for the iwire harness, i got to installing the innovate psb-1 sensors. loomed them up and will put it into the iwire harness so i dont have to cut any holes or poke any groumets. only the wideband sensor will be a problem, since its so thick.

next is getting a fitting for the radiator that i tapped. after that i really cant do anything else until the iwire harness is done. without the harness i cant put the heater core back or the heater hoses.

oh forgot about fluids. ill work on that this week. engine, trans and diff oil.

been a lazy week! not many parts coming in now; last main thing is the iwire harness. without that i cant get heater hoses, cant put the intercooler on, cant run the innovate psb-1 harness, etc. basicly im stuck and kind of lazy and not much steam as when i started. hopefully i would get my harness soon so i could put the interior in and put coolant in.

i still have to tighten all the driveshaft bolts, install the heat shields for the drive shaft, cut the hangers off the GD exhaust and reweld them.

started on the power steering mount. i made a simple 90deg bracket to mount to the original evac canister on the front frame rail.

change things up a bit. hope to get back in the groove to finish the coupe.
over the weekend i took a trip to berdoo canyon with my friend and a bunch of jeepers. one hell of a bumpy and rough ride. they drove really fast. i usually go pretty slow and enjoy the views.

my boys watching jeeps drive and slide down a hill

hopefully i can get other things ready before the harness is done. got to get that motivation back.

last few weeks been slow again. but great news, iwire harness is done. ill be picking it up on tuesday. so this weekend i got to work tightening all the bolts under the car and getting all the fluids in. only thing is the coolant that is not in yet.

today i spent some time cleaning my hvac system. so much dust, dirt, and leaves everywhere. in the pics; that is about half of what was left before taking it apart. i should have all this clean by tuesday. but i wont have time to get the harness back in till next weekend.

i got a cheap ebay exhasut for the wrx thinking it will fit. the muffler is tilted pretty bad. the mid pipe cant be bolted in because it is up against the driveshaft support and heat shield. so ill have to chop the midpipe and do some pie cuts to angle it down about half an inch. then chop the pipe off the muffler and reangle it.

i bought head light kit from ebay doesnt fit as good as i thought. the corner lights are sunken in a bit and looks funny.

so ive been spending my money on ammo lately and put off a few items for the impreza. i was going to get cobb ap, crawford catch can, RS bumper and lights etc.. i think i really need the cobb because im not sure if the car was tuned before. it seems light it was moddified before and parts removed when sold.
