Here's my analysis after first oil change at 4,025 miles, and no more gentle than recommended break-in.

Element Actual PPM / Typical PPM

Aluminum 5/2
Chromium 0/1
Iron 24/7
Copper 152/5
Lead 1/5
Tin 4/1
Molybdenum 927/53
Nickel 1/0
Manganese 10/4
Silver 0/0
Titanium 0/0
Potassium 3/1
Boron 163/44
Silicon 306/10
Sodium 8/15
Calcium 1783/2187
Magnesium 11/266
Phosphorus 784/771
Zinc 905/937
Barium 6/0

Result / Should Be

SUS Viscosity @ 210F: 48.6/46-56
cSt Viscosity @ 100C: 6.84/6.0-9.4
Flashpoint 405F/>385F
Fuel % <0.5/<2.0
Antifreeze % 0/0
Water % 0/<0.1
Insolubles % 0.2/<0.6

Comments: High wear and silicon are common finds in new engines, such as your new Impreza. The excess wear metals are from new parts breaking-in while silicon is from sand-casted parts and sealers used when assembling your engine. Both should improve with subsequent oil changes. Universal averages for this type of engine are based on an oil run of ~4,200 miles. With a few more oil changes your wear should read at or below universal averages. Subaru makes nice engines, so this should be a good one for you. No contaminants or problems found.

Thanks for the UOA. It looks like the Viscosity gets beat up a little on the FF on our Imprezas.

What do you mean by "on the FF"?

Since the UOA report doesn't provide "Actual/Typical" data with regard to the Viscosity numbers, how do you know that the viscosity takes a beating on the factory fill oil? I don't understand the viscosity numbers well enough to understand how you determined this.

Regardless, I did my first oil change at two days ago 1700 miles, using Amsoil OE 0W20 and a Subaru oil filter (the correct "160" P/N filter). I also installed a Fumoto valve.

Oh, and I love my new jack, which reaches the lift points deep under the car very nicely (and yes, I did use jack stands before sliding myself under the car):

http://www.harborfreight.com/rapid-p...html-7814.html

I replaced the thin rubber pad in the jack's saddle with a hockey puck, which provides lots of cushioning.

Im curious i didnt see an exact lift point i just lifted from one of the 2 body formed rails under the car

See this image: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/bitogw...11/03/visc.jpg

A cSt of 6.8 is on the lower end of the 20 range, though we don't really know its viscosity from the factory.

Most 0W-20 oils on the market have a starting Viscosity @100c between 8.0-8.7. The Amsoil OE 0W-20 has a starting viscosity 8.3.

With his oil having a Viscosity of 6.88 at the end of the oil change interval. It sheared down a little. It's still a 20 weight oil though. Most 5W-30's shear down to a 20 weight after a long oil change interval. But 5W-20's usually stay pretty much where they start. The car is breaking in, so that's why the Viscosity is where it's at.

Send me a PM with your email address, and I'll send you a scan from the shop manual that identifies the lift points to use when raising the car with a floor jack (both for the front and the rear of the car).

After I use a jack at these lift points to get the car up in the air, I use jack stands to support the car at the rails.

By using this process to first lift the front end of the car, and then the back end of the car, I can get all four tires up in the air, which is useful for tire rotations, brake line bleeding, and so on. For my oil change last weekend, I only raised the front of the car.

This thread is very helpful. Thanks guys.

I already have 1250 miles on my new Impreza and I'm taking my new ride and a couple kayaks on a nice vacation to the Adirondacks tomorrow (approx. 500 miles roundtrip). Once I return, I plan on doing my first oil change***8230; so that should be right around 2000 miles. I'll probably just go with the Mobil 1 from Walmart - the price is right, and its highly convenient.

I'm thinking of installing a fumoto valve, but I'm not sure which model is right for my 2012 Impreza. I've searched the forums, and some people say the F-105N is the right one, but others say its the F-108N. Can anyone set the record straight?

I have a f-108n awaiting installation. Maybe I can have the Dealer tech put it in when I take it for its free first change in a few hundred more miles. And If I ask really nice maybe they will fill the little sample bottle for me as well.

(If not I'll do it myself at a later date)

Is there anyone else who doesn't think that performing a Used Oil Analysis on the factory fill is very informative? You know the metals and silicon readings are going to be abnormally high. So why bother?

I'm thinking that pulling a sample from the 2nd or maybe even 3rd oil change would be more useful.

Since it's a brand new engine, I think any analysis would be informative. Also comparing different break-in styles.

i see the Amsoil OE and XL (I currently have XL in mine) start at 8.3, but the Signature series starts at 8.7. and is what I have been planning to run starting next fill.

after looking at these UOA's and a few others on BITOG i kinda wish I had run the factory oil a little longer as it had a really high MOLY, and most 0w-20's do not.

Remember that moly from factory fills may not be an additive, but from a piston coating applied at the factory. In other words, the oil may not be the source of the moly in a UOA from a factory fill.

I read that after i posted. I think subaru uses Moly coated pistons so you are probably correct. My mind is just messing with me

I went a tad early for my first free oil change at just a hair over 3K miles instead of the recommended 3750. The tech took a sample for me as I requested. It was taken from my car and mid stream during the drain. I watched so there was no dipping in the mystery fluid container.

Sent the sample in and here are the results.

I am due in again at the 7500 mile point to get the tires rotated and another oil change so this batch of Subaru 0w20 will get about 4500 miles. After that the 7500 mile OCI is what is prescribed. That will kinda depend on the results on the next couple UOA results I get. I think I'd feel better with 5K OCI.

Miles on oil 4,491
Miles on engine 7,491

Havoline Synthetic 0W-20

It looks like the Silicon is treading down nicely. Both the Silicon and Moly is from the assembly. They should be near zero on on the next OCI. I don't know why they flagged the viscosity. This oil has a viscosity @100c of 8.0. So it was pretty much rock solid during the 4,491 miles.
