Edit: I'm confused about the 'handshake' procedure for the Phase 1 4EAT, 1995-1998 (no 'manual' button). Having trouble finding the 'original' version I've used in the past. The USMB site's search function is not very useful, and i'd guess that's where I last used it. My current Subie has a manual.

No...I don't think it means 'fully off', just key to 'off' has far as it'll go.
BUT - I think that is the Phase 2 / II; not Phase 1 / I. If you're referencing this post, per the title is for late '90s-2004: https://www.subaruoutback.org/thread...es-dtcs.44383/

Another TCU Code link: https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum...mission-codes/

See this and scroll down to the attachments. Under 'Readcodes' it has the FSM/factory service manual's version of the 'handshake': https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum...egacy-outback/

Phase 1 is '90-'98; Phase 2 is '99+ (not sure when/if Subaru stopped using the 'phase' designations)

The below step is for the handshake method for a 96 legacy OB on the USMB forum. The guy couldn't pull any codes until he did the step. I wonder if you or someone can confirm if it applies to my 95.

"Move the shifter to D with the key off. Connect the diagnostic terminal pin 5 to ground using the ground pins in the harness."

Yeah..I read that one, too. You'll need the FSM (or at least the FSM page) to ID the Pin 5 on the referenced plug connector.

Your '95 doesn't have the Manual button on the AT gear shift, correct? I'd guess it's the same as the '96-'98 procedure.

Ok, I'll try to get a hold of the FSM. And correct, mine does not have the manual button on the shifter.

You're too kind :-)

Question for you: When it says to ground pin #5, I'm assuming they're talking about position 5 on the OBD2 port, correct? But what does it mean when it says to ground it using the ground pins in the harness? Confused.

No...that'd be PIN 5 on the connector itself. Pretty sure that's the B82 connector referenced in that post. See this: https://www.scoobynet.com/wheels-tyr...assic-abs.html

Looks like it may be taped up to another harness - maybe near the green connectors used for 'active' diagnostics.

In all my years playing with (Hah!) Subarus I've yet to see anyone tap into the the OBD2 port for anything - other tha to connect a code scanner, Tactrix cable (to tune certain models' ECUs) or the like.

Ok thanks. So once I find the connector (B82) I put a wire in position 5 and take it to a ground? Sorry for the ignorance here.

No worries. - yes, that's what I believe you'd do.
